These come out of the Steam pump flotsom pools. No use for them, just sell it for 6 gold. Nice!

I caught one today right next to the fishing guy by Cenarion Refuge.
Hands-down, the funniest item in the game.
If you're lucky, you had a first experience with them kind of like mine: I caught mine out of a Sporefish pool in Zanga, and I was talking on Ventrillo with my buddies at the time. At first you're pissed that you caught a gray item out of a "special" fishing whirlpool. Then you begin to think about the name... then you guess that maybe it sells for a lot? And when you finally vendor it for 6g, you laugh out loud =D This is a new item just like you used to catch Iron/Mithril Bound Trunks from fishing pools in Azeroth. It's not the fish you were targeting when you cast into that pool, but it's a pleasant bonus to have in the loot table. Bravo, Blizzard.
I actually thought is was a bugged item and bought it back from the vendor just to be sure. 6g is very nice bonus for a gray fish.
Is it possible to catch those through open-water fishing, or are they only in pools?
I caught three in a row in terrokar near allerian and was pissed cause they all came our of a school of darter and I like the fish sticks, then I went to sell them and was surprised to get 18g for the three, thanks blizz for giving us a chance to make some gold while standing there and fishing.
EDIT: 19 Days later not another vendorfish.....sigh o well more Darter I guess lol.
Good luck in farming this one. It's drop chance, depending on the location is about 1 in 150 or so.
6g is a nice bonus for those of us farming, say, motes of water to use. If you were planning on farming it, your time would be better spent farming netherweave cloth, which a stack sells for about the same, and is FAR more plentiful. Just another opinion, Garimon Horde Spriest Gilneas
ye its a nice vendor price, i just got 2 in a row, i got really dissapointed first cuse i was farming Mote of water. When i saw the vendor price i checked here to see if u could use it for anything. And when i see the drop chance i guess im kinda lucky getting 2 in a row =)

Caught in Terrokar Forest (just north of Shatt City) *Did not fish it from a special 'pool'. It's just something neat. I ended up keeping mine, like "Shark Bait" (from pick pocketing). You can get 6g anytime but this took me around 2 days of fishing to get- not intentionally of course.
LOL - I have been feeding these to my Cat! Kind os an expensive meal, but he likes them!

Well...im glad I came here and checked on the fish just to make sure it was good pocket change, collecting my sporefish as usually for my healing buddy for raids, and got my first one from Zangarmarsh. Have fun fishing out there :)
Why would anyone buy an item for 25g that has a one and only use of selling to a vendor for 6g? The only explanation that I can think of is that some noobs buy accounts/gold and are way over-levelled and over monied for their experience. They then go around spending gold stupidly (and making a nuisance of themselves in parties coz they cant play their characters properly).
Another funny item i pickpocketed on my rogue was "Sharkbait" -The icon looked like a clownfish and the yellow text read "Just keep swimming..."
