Not great damage, limited mobility, long cooldown, and can't be used in arenas. It has about 6k health and only moderate armor. The only saving grace is it's amazing ability to hold agro. PvE only pretty much. PvP it's a waste of mana, and as I mentioned it can't be used in arenas because it's cooldown is higher than 15 minutes.
It's best use is hold agro of a larger pull in an instance or something because even on bosses it dies too quickly and is a waste of healer's mana to keep it up. The only other use is to save your ass when running away from NPCs. Drop it and you get a few more seconds to run.

Completely disagree , it is a very useful spell.  6k health is about my health at the moment and it has more then moderate armor plus it has a very fast attack speed and good aggro control.  any normal NPC boss or 4 just plain NPCS it can easily tank. Now if you're talking about an elite , i could see why you would say that but even so.

Today i was in that forest outside shatt.  we were killing a level 66 elite with a 67 shaman and druid and one mage.  he kept wiping the floor with us because he would MC me and then i would kill the druid.  Once i put down the earth elemental totem it was an easy fight. He kept aggro well
and as long as the druid throw him a heal now and then he would  easily hold aggro. The only prob was the 2 min cooldown. He faded a few secs before we killed the guy.

Another time , i was killing a couple ogres in nagrand . I rez'd within the range of a mage on accident then a warrior and mage pat came along and before i knew it i was losing life very quickly. i throw down earth elemental and he quickly regained aggro saved me from the brink of death and not only helped me beat them. but i pulled more guys to him and helped me get a lot more ogres.

A very useful spell. He Rocks :)

Stop complaining that the earth elemental doesn't do much damage, that's what the fire elemental is for. Earth is for pulling aggro in PvE, an instant cast extra 7000 health is pretty damn nice, even if it did 0 damage.

      Quote from fire elemental page:

"for a pet, it does a lot of damage.  Just now I saw mine crit blast wave for 1100 (700 regular).  fire blast does a chunk of damage too, about 500.

Also, keep in mind that this does not require talent points to get, unlike the mages water elemental which requires all 41.

I've played with a few Shammies that pulled this thing out, and it's awesome!  It tanked the boss we were on without a problem, and it's darn near impossible for this thing to loose aggro it seems.  (not sure if it actually is or not)  We had a Mage and Lock with us the other night when the shammy in our group threw this down, and even with both the mage and lock critting constantly in the 2500 dmg range, it never lost aggro.

Oh, and yes, you can heal it ;)  One thing about it though that you will want to make sure not to over estimate...you will still want a tank or some sort building aggro on this things target if you are fighting a boss.  Remember, this thing only lasts for 2 minutes...after that 2 min is up whoever tops the aggro charts is gonna feel the hurt.

I have to say as a sham main, when I first saw this spell in the list from Bliz, I was disappointed it was a totem, because it would seem to be virtually worthless in pvp. One nick on it, and bye bye elemental + 20 min cd. However, having used it several times in bg's (mostly Eye of the Storm) I have to say this is the most entertaining thing I'm able to use in the bg! It's hilarious watching Allies run around it frantically, while you see Immune Immune Immune pop up on its head over and over. It does ~140 damage per hit, not much, but not to be ignored either. I believe it's more the scare factor than anything else tho that makes it effective.

The first time I used it in Eye of the Storm, there was a heated skirmish ongoing around the middle flag, seemingly at a stalemate. I was attacking allies who ventured too far from their group and throwing a heal here and there. I figure, what the hey, I'm prolly gonna be here at least 10 more min anyway, lets see what this elemental will do here, if it even lasts more than 3 seconds.

That thing ran straight to the middle of the allies as if I were directing it, myself. A couple of them tried attacking it, but it was often immune, and they werent doing a lot to it. Suddenly most of their team was backstepping in a semi retreat mode. He chased them off the middle bridge, and well beyond. I very much doubt he was still within range of the actual totem. I felt like I had just summoned Lok from AV on these guys haha! When some dead Ally reinforcements made their way back to the scene, they started focusing on it more. Hiding behind a large rock mound, I was able to get a heal on it, and wouldve easily and gladly done more just for kicks, but I was oom. Ah well, the damage was done, so I guess he be leavin'. :P

Since then tho, the elemental most often lives longer than I do lol. A couple somewhat obvious tips if you're going to use it in pvp. Put it down in pitched, fairly even battles. Try to hide the totem, itself, on the outskirts of the skirmish, preferably in some more difficult to find area. Behind a rock or in a crevice in the terrain. Trust me, your elemental will know where to go. Oh, and try not to die too soon, so you get a good chance to see it in action! :)

Like the Warlock's Infernal, Earth Elemental Totem is loads of fun for intimidating the crap out of people in battlegrounds. However, did you know that in WotLK, Earth Elemental totem has a real, bona-fide purpose for battlegrounds?

As most caster classes could tell you, a Death Knight's Army of the Dead spell is one of the most annoying things to get hit by. All of a sudden, several undead minions show up that can't be feared or sheeped. They can be frozen, but as a sham your options are limited.

What most people forget is that the Army of the Dead is quite literally, in every sense of the phrase, a dumb mob of undead gouls. Unlike the normal DK pet, the casting Death Knight has no control over them, and they just sort of wander around and kill things that the casting DK is also in combat with. This is exactly the same as your Earth Elemental (although the elemental sticks by its totem, rather than by you as in the case of the Army). Those minions from Army of the Dead can be taunted off of just about anything, including you!

Earth Elemental Totem is a spectacular counter to a Death Knight's (or multiple Death Knights') Army of the Dead gouls.

In Strand of the Ancients, 3 (yes three) DKs put up their Army at the same time. Once they all spawned, I threw down Earth Elemental totem and put earth shield on it. It taunted all of them, and was able to hold aggro on all of them while my teammates and I delt with the real threat (the DKs). It kept em all in one spot, and so long as I healed the Earth Elemental occasionally it actually outlasted them! Yes, unholy DKs can reduce it to 10m, but you can also glyph yourself to reduce Earth Elemental to 10m.

It's a 20min shaman cooldown versus a 20min Death Knight cooldown, folks, and it looks like things are at a stalemate!

      • Instance pulls that go wrong

      • Soloing elites

Because it has an AoE taunt ability, it's useful for getting guys off you. This is not, however, the ideal PvP totem. I'd much rather use fire elemental for burst damage in that case.
