it only stays with the totem, it doesn't follow you like a pet.

Not great damage, limited mobility, long cooldown, and can't be used in arenas. It has about 6k health and only moderate armor. The only saving grace is it's amazing ability to hold agro. PvE only pretty much. PvP it's a waste of mana, and as I mentioned it can't be used in arenas because it's cooldown is higher than 15 minutes.
It's best use is hold agro of a larger pull in an instance or something because even on bosses it dies too quickly and is a waste of healer's mana to keep it up. The only other use is to save your ass when running away from NPCs. Drop it and you get a few more seconds to run.
we would all much rather have the classic purple spirit wolves. they would at least be cool.
Stop complaining that the earth elemental doesn't do much damage, that's what the fire elemental is for. Earth is for pulling aggro in PvE, an instant cast extra 7000 health is pretty damn nice, even if it did 0 damage.
Quote from fire elemental page: "for a pet, it does a lot of damage. Just now I saw mine crit blast wave for 1100 (700 regular). fire blast does a chunk of damage too, about 500. Also, keep in mind that this does not require talent points to get, unlike the mages water elemental which requires all 41.
For those who are reading this without being a 68 shaman, there is a 2 min cooldown between elemental totems.. you can pop your rock guy, but then you gotta wait 2 min for the fire.. on the up side, my fire elemental damn near killed a rogue that tried to gank me while I pickin flowers. :)
And right after posting that first part, I got my rock to tank a 70 elite, so it's definitely worth having... who needs a friend when you have something you can create?
Well i have to say the Cooldown for this is not fair imo but the totem itself ive found quite useful, Atm im only 66 (just got the totem ^^)
and i took a lv 68 elite by myself its up to you what you guys think about the totem but i think its not bad but id love blizz to reduce the CD or something :D
I use this on bosses/elites and with a little heal it can tank them while I or my group killes whatever we are killing. 20 min cd is a bit /cry, gife 2 min! ^^
Then I could spec resto and use this to solo instances :O It is immune to many things that normaly does a lot of damage on a normal tank. It has very good armor and not a bad health either. Dps isnt to much, but it holds aggro of anything. (never seen any1 taking aggro of it without using taunt)
If anyone is having trouble on the final boss in Shadow Labs, this guy totally rules. Immune to most nature attackand recieved minimal damage, your healer isnt going to have much trouble doing his healing thang. 2 minute super-tank.
I have to say as a sham main, when I first saw this spell in the list from Bliz, I was disappointed it was a totem, because it would seem to be virtually worthless in pvp. One nick on it, and bye bye elemental + 20 min cd. However, having used it several times in bg's (mostly Eye of the Storm) I have to say this is the most entertaining thing I'm able to use in the bg! It's hilarious watching Allies run around it frantically, while you see Immune Immune Immune pop up on its head over and over. It does ~140 damage per hit, not much, but not to be ignored either. I believe it's more the scare factor than anything else tho that makes it effective.
The first time I used it in Eye of the Storm, there was a heated skirmish ongoing around the middle flag, seemingly at a stalemate. I was attacking allies who ventured too far from their group and throwing a heal here and there. I figure, what the hey, I'm prolly gonna be here at least 10 more min anyway, lets see what this elemental will do here, if it even lasts more than 3 seconds. That thing ran straight to the middle of the allies as if I were directing it, myself. A couple of them tried attacking it, but it was often immune, and they werent doing a lot to it. Suddenly most of their team was backstepping in a semi retreat mode. He chased them off the middle bridge, and well beyond. I very much doubt he was still within range of the actual totem. I felt like I had just summoned Lok from AV on these guys haha! When some dead Ally reinforcements made their way back to the scene, they started focusing on it more. Hiding behind a large rock mound, I was able to get a heal on it, and wouldve easily and gladly done more just for kicks, but I was oom. Ah well, the damage was done, so I guess he be leavin'. :P Since then tho, the elemental most often lives longer than I do lol. A couple somewhat obvious tips if you're going to use it in pvp. Put it down in pitched, fairly even battles. Try to hide the totem, itself, on the outskirts of the skirmish, preferably in some more difficult to find area. Behind a rock or in a crevice in the terrain. Trust me, your elemental will know where to go. Oh, and try not to die too soon, so you get a good chance to see it in action! :)

How far away can this elemental be away from its totem before it disappears
I only use this elemental for:
Because it has an AoE taunt ability, it's useful for getting guys off you. This is not, however, the ideal PvP totem. I'd much rather use fire elemental for burst damage in that case.

The cooldown is ridiculous! I don't mind the fact that you can;t use thm at the same time but 20mins! I'ts stupid. What I would Like to see is Blizzard taking it down to 15mins so we can shove these in arenas. anyone in a 5v5 + Fire elemental totem or Earth shoul quake in there booties =P
When this elemental is summoned, is it like a hunter's pet, where you control its abilities(agressive, defencive, passive, stay, follow, attack, etc.) or is it like the pet of the SM boss drop, Dog Whistle? And that it have any other abilities other than simple attack? If they do, what are they?
I just picked up this totem and i gotta say it is awesome for soloing elites or if you get in a
"Oh Shit" situation! Excellent to pull agro off you or for when you get sick and tired of that one rogue sneak attacking you, just pull this guy out, RAWRRRR!!! That being said, a 20 minute cooldown is freaking insane, c'mon now Blizz be realistic. I understand the 2 min CD between the two elementals, but they definetly need to reduce the CD on these guys down to 10 minutes max. I mean I've never once heard someone complain that Shamans are overpowered, drop the CD on this down to 10 minutes and well actually have a chance in PVP. Your Thoughts?

I use this while PvEing, its very helpful.throw it a heal everyone once in a while and you can take more than 4 at a time.
So i use my Fire Elemental to help lowbie guildies/friends.i pull the whole instance and drop my fire elemtanl and he fire novas and thats the instance! ( well the bosses will have about half health left) All in all the elementals a shaman can summon are very helpful. Earth elemental is very useful againt murmur ( last boss in shadow labs) because the earth elemental is immune to nature attacks and most of murmurs are nature attacks XD Although the cooldown completely sucks , we can HORDE SHAMMIES FTW! What blizz should do is enable a talent that reduces the cooldown of the elemental totems just as they did with the reincarnation talent that reduces its cooldown for like 20 min. even if it reduces the cooldown for 10min would be wayy betta! :) ftw!
The aoe taunt from the Earth Elemental can be disruptive to tanks trying to maintain control over a mob.
I saw 2 shammies unleash their Earth Elemental Totems in AV whilst the tank was trying to pull Galv to the back of the room. He didnt have a hope in hell of holding aggro, as the elementals taunt effect appeared to have a shorter cooldown than the warriors taunt ability. With the shaman healing their elementals, the warrior could only stand by and watch as Galv proceeded to fear people out of the room and continuously reset until the elementals disappeared.
im pretty sure that most levelling shammies, as of 3.0.2, have the same question in mind if they are not able to try..
Can this be used together with spirit wolves? Answer: YES THEY DO!!!!! and the thing is, with those 3 on ur side, there is nothing that u cant solo =P
why dosent the shaman have air and water elementals two. it would be awesome to have 4 elementals earth, fire, water and air elementals
