It will not work if you are standing above it, you need to right click on the knife while standing on the ledge where the "coffin" is located in order for the mob to come out

I think we have an intermittent bug. I'm on Khaz'Goroth but I don't think it makes any difference which realm you're on. I tried this three times a couple of days ago and each time I ran into the bug described above. (I'm a lvl 39 priest.)
Because some people were encountering the bug and some weren't I wondered whether the problem was cleared after a server reboot. The whole game is rebooted every Tuesday night (Australia time) so I logged on Wednesday morning first thing and it all worked perfectly. (Woot!) So it's just a theory but it seems to have worked once... As mentioned above, you know you have the bug if you can see the boss stuck in the altar before you've done anything at all. You just swim down and there he is. You get the cog wheel and when it's finished you try and attack him and you just get Evade. At that point I don't think there's anything you can do until the game is reset. I wonder if the problem occurs when someone kills the boss in that position; stuck in the altar. Unless you are a warlock or have a potion you are going to have to drag him to the surface and kill him there. Maybe the bug occurs if you kill him on the spot and he doesn't reset properly. For the record, here's how I did it. Dive down and pull one of the guys beside the altar. Return to surface and deal with him. Before I could kill him he pulled the next one. Finished the first guy and killed the second. (They didn't seem quite as tough as elites usually are... but your mileage may vary.) Swam to nearby rock and restored mana. Dived down to the altar on the side that I'd cleared and triggered the cog wheel. A second after it finished the boss appeared and I tried to drag him to the surface. Must have gone too fast and I lost him. Repeated clicking on altar, triggered boss and this time got him to surface. He turns into an elemental but you just keep plugging away. (In my case I kept my bubble up and wanded him to death.) Loot body. Back to Booty Bay. Yay! I see from spiroui's comment above that, if I'd stayed in the blue column, I might have been able to do the quest without having to kill any of the elites around the altar! Hope this helps. As of today, July 4 2007. This quest is still bugged, I used the blade on the altar then nothing happened. GM responded that it is a known issue, and they are looking into it.
Don't waste your time on this quest, its so far away from the nearest FP not to mention you have to swim out, its not worth trying at all. Just wondering, why the hack Bliz don't just put a warning next to the quest name or something, so that ppl like myself won't waste absolutely hours, and went into trouble to look for group members... then finally found it is bugged?!?! Wake up Bliz, if you couldn't fix it yet, a warning is the least you should do. It worked for me after being bugged like this.
- go to the altar (as described above) - do NOT click / right click it, but instead RIGHT CLICK CATELYN'S BLADE (in your inventory) - cursor starts glowing, now LEFT CLICK THE ALTAR - Short John Mithril yells, but also : Gazban appears - kill loot etc Sorry about all the caps but I was so happy I made it work. Could be coincidence, but thought I'd share anyway

OK EVERYONE THAT HAS HAD TROUBLE WITH THE QUEST LISTEN!
I have done this quest with three different characters, all had the bug. The first time, i dropped the quest, second time, i tried twice and it worked on the second try, third time, i was in a grp with five other people that needed the quest, it was bugged at the beginning and we all tried everything, moving around it, trying difererent positions, look at the list and see what worked and didnt work POSITION- no PET- no ENEMIES AROUND IT- no AMOUNT OF PPL YOU HAVE- no USING THE KNIFE FROM YOUR BAG- no USING THE COGWHEEL- forget it WETHER YOU ARE ON TOP OF THE ALTAR OR NEXT TO IT- no So, how did I complete this quest? LOOK DOWN -> *IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH GETTING IT TO WORK THE* <- FIRST TIME, RESURFACE AND LOG OUT/IN!!!!!! MAGIC! IT WORKS NOW, RIGHT? PLEASE VOTE THIS UP SO IT DOESN'T GET DELETED - IT'S THE TRUTH

If you open a ticket with a GM, all they are going to say is there aware of the situation and there is nothing they can do ATM, thats when you ask for your money back... then they say they cant do that and you ask to chat with the supervisor.... then they investigate a little further like they should have done in the first place and explain to you in detail, what you need to do in order to complete the quest. The gm helped me last night forced him to. Use the GM thats what blizzard pays them to do. Customer satisfaction is major demand it!

Ok for people having trouble with the quest not working...
drop/abandon the quest. Re-acquire the quest from Kaitlin the blade...which is where you've come from in the first place. Go back to the alter and stand INSIDE the blue/purple light stuff. Activate the alter and it should work. Some quests that appear to be broken aren't really broken. They have odd quirks about them and something thats done out of step might throw a wrench into the works. If that doesn't work...well...Abandon it and move on...lifes too short. Besides...unless you're a clothy...you can;t really use the robes anyway.
Tuesday restart worked for me on Whisperwind. If the altar is bugged, wait until after the Tuesday server restart, and there's a pretty good chance it will be working. Tried it Monday night about 20 times to no avail, but worked first time around after the restart.

kk this is first time im doing quest with my level 42 and when i go down it say focusing and it loads like ur opening something oince its done in like 5 seconds nothing happends? could some 1 plz help me i was to get rid of this quest :)

Do not try this quest as it is seriously bugged.
The GM's cannot help. All they say is that they are aware of it and have been for some time and to give it another try after the server maintenance as you sometimes get lucky then. Like most poeple, I too have experienced stress, agony and frustration with this BLOODY quest, where you go to use the knife and nothing happens. I tried everything like logging on/off, abadoning quest and starting it again, standing in different positions around the altar, using the knife from my inventory, standing in the "blue haze" around the altar and so on, but not one thing worked or happened.
Well, as of today (14/05/2008) after a weekly maintenance and a new patch download, I went back to do the quest, AGAIN, and did it first time, HOORAH!!! Some of the comments that I had read mentioned that it should work ok after the maintenance and so it has. The following is what happened to me before maintenance, and what happened after: 1) For several days before 14/05/2008, I tried everything (as mentioned above). Once though, a message by Gazban came up saying something like "What the? what force is bringing me back to the altar" (or something like that). The night before, I tried again and still nothing happened. (Also, in the breaking news window, when logging on, in mentioned about the extended weekly maintenance) 2) Now on 14/05/2008, the first thing that I do is go on my PC and find that I have to download the new 2.4.2 patch, which I do. Once done, I logged on as normal. 3) Once in, I go back to the altar, use the knife (from my inventory, right clicking knife then left clicking on altar) on the altar and BAM, Gazban appears and says something like "You are making me angry. Now I will show you the true force of the stone of tides". After a few hits he turns into a water elemental, then I finish him off as you would normally. Then I loot him, get the stone of tides, back to booty bay, hand in quest, get robe, DONE. Finally!!!!!!!! 4) I was a 42 human warlock when I did this and had no problem beating him on my own, although I did pull a nearby murloc while I was fighting him, but still coped. I also want to mention something I noticed. When you are near the altar, facing north on the map, before the update there was 2 murlocs on the right hand side of the altar, both oracles. After the update, still 2 murlocs but 1 was a hunter and the other an oracle. I don't know if that matters, but I thought I should mention it. Think thats everything. My advice is that if you have any problems, wait until after the weekly maintenance on Tuesday or Wednesday, then at the earliest opportunity, do the quest again and you should be fine. All the other tricks i tried did not work. Good Luck!!!

I sent a petition to GM Albalfie of Burning Blade today regarding this quest. I had the same problem many of you were having. I went down to the depths of The Vile Reef, cleared about 3 murlocs -- (enough to activate the stone safely) and nothing happened.
The GM told me this was to be fixed in the next restart (Tuesday). As I was talking to the GM, I was running around STV doing quick quests. I decided to go back, (as hardheaded as I am) and try it again. This time it worked! I went down, killed 3 murlocs, activated stone, and there was Gazban! I hit him once, and started swimming to the surface for air. He followed me, but at one point he started casting, so I gouged him and continued my way up, he still followed. So there you have it. HERE's the SCOOP! You're underwater, its dark and murky, the goblin is small and green... He's simply hard as hell to see, and if you're not close to him when he spawns, he won't attack you. And if you don't see him and re-try it? He disappears and it takes a while for it to trigger again. GOT THAT? Each of three times he spawned for me, he was on the NORTH side of the altar. (1st time I died, 2nd time I didn't see him until I re-clicked alter and he vanished, and 3rd time took some more clicks and took about a minute.) It's not broken.
