There are lockboxes for picking just north of Ethel Rethor (about 38,26)
They are underwater and are orange for me at lockpicking level 174, which i assume means is orange at level 170, which is when the lockboxes in the redridge lake turn grey.

Gaurded by some lower level naga, no problem though

      EDIT: Turned yellow at 175!

I must say, there's an interesting cold war going on in Desolace at the moment on my server at least.

It seems as though both factions come there mainly to quest and grind their way through the thirties, so as a result they'd rather go about their business than fight whomever they meet from the opposite faction even if compatible, level-wise. Often have Horde members run or rode right past me, sometimes waving a silent greeting on the way, but those that are on my level or lower carefully tip-toe around me making sure to face me so they can keep an eye on me to make sure I'm not gonna start any funny business. Hence the term "cold war". :)

Naturally, there is the occasional ganker or person on-level that feels like fighting, but it's remarkably rare.

Is anyone noting the same tendencies on other servers, I wonder? (Mine is Shattered Hand, Europe)

I noticed a trend in Thotbot.  Several escorting quests are missing from Thotbot.  For example, the Caravan guys give you 2 quests in Desolace.

They ask to be escorted both times.  It takes time to start the quest again (like 45 minutes), because the caravan moves slowly and sometimes stops moving for a while.

The first quest is a bit north of Kalkor village, on the road.  You must protect the Caravan from centaurs.

Later, when the caravan is returning back north, the caravan needs an escort again in the area with Infernals and Demons.

Anyway, the quest giver yells it in red so you know when its time to do the quest.

From Ashenvale, take the talondeep path (42,72) to Stonetalon Mountains zone.  You'll end up in Windshear Crag area.  You then need to go to the back of the Charred Vale (30,76) via Sun Rock Retreat for Horde or the path at Mirkfallon Lake for Alliance.

Once in Desolace, Alliance base is Nigel's Point at (64,10) along the north edge past where the road turns south.  Look for the Stormwind Guards and head up the hill.  FP is to your left further up hill.  Horde Base is Shadowprey Village at (22,72).  Follow the road to the south-west corner of the map.  FP is at the end of the pier, inn is on the hill.  Both locations give similar quests.  Especially important is the Scarlet Monastary chain quest with Brother Anton on the 2nd floor of the Alliance Inn.

Note that the entrance to Ferala is at (41,92)

I'm a lvl 37 noob (Pally) and have to admit that even after two years of play there is still an aire of neutrality in Desolace.  I started exploring Kalimdor because all the good quests were in STV and I was sick of getting ganked by lvl ??'s.  Even with guild and pick-up grouping I kept getting nailed.
Desolace is a different beast, though welcome.  My guild-mates pretty much stick to the east so there is a feeling of alone that might very well be universal across factions - who knows.  I'd love to hear more Horde comments on Desolace.
I ran into a UD rouge getting attacked by a pack of dogs last night and thought to myself that it would make the game very interesting if I could heal Horde while in contested territory.  Better yet, it would be even cooler to permanently switch sides, at say lvl 40 or 50.
Another thing I found interesting was the contrivance on the part of Desolace Alliance NPC's in regards to pitting centuars clans against each other, and not trusting the other races - A great intro into the world of factions.
The larger than life Mobs are also a great touch - you just don't see those very often in the East.

This is obviously a bit late, but here's a Horde's thoughts on Desolance for you.

I first journied to Desolance on my tauren druid and was immedately stuck by the loneliness of that place. Although there are many zones that reflect on the destruction of nature, none does it quite so well as Desolance. Being there is like being on Mercury; there are no plants to be found except on the fringes of the moutains and near the sea, and the water is fouler than in sewers of Undercity, which at least carries a pleasent neon glow. But off the coast, the sunrises are spectacular.

I rarely see the other faction in Desolance. Usually when I'm there, even on weekends, I'll be the only Horde in the zone. The Alliance I have seen were probably doing Mauderon and didn't seem interested in me, even when I was an easy kill. Desolance is a great zone to quest in if you want to get away from PvP, but it might make you a little depressed too.

Big grey tower with sealed entryway. The only thing of interest in the area is the questgiver.

One of my guildies says the interior of Ethel Rethor is a GM area...anyone else heard anything like that?

Thist depends entirely on your server. STV has something of a nasty reputation for constant ganking where Desolace has admittedly less. If you play on a PVE server than it really doesnt matter at all, although, I would still suggest Desolace because visually it's more interesting than jungle.

I found out today (after a death with my lvl 30 hunter) the easiest way to discover Shadowprey village in Desolace is to swim out in water, then go aways out from the guard, and toward shore at 25, 74 (this is almost directly below the top of the ramp at the waterline.)  You can stay in water, or jump up.

Desolace has always been my favorite zone in the Old World. I don't know why. But I guess it makes you feel like you're on your own -- isolated from the world.
The Nijel's Point music really sets the mood for this dead zone with the lime-colored sky.

It's also the very zone that made me wanna roll my Dwarf Hunter, and I'll never forget that.
