Yes sooty can be tamed. I did it with a level 20 hunter. Seeing as he's an elite, I recomend using a potion or two before hand just to be on the safe side. A defense potion would be a good idea, but isn't needed.

I am playing a 20 hunter on Ursin.  Just got Ol' Sooty last night.  His Armor (904) is actually less then my LAN bud's random pig (939) that he has had since lvl 11 (the pig and Ol' Sooty are both lvl 20 now).  Stats are identical except for armor, and Ol' Sooty beats the pig by 0.1 dps.

Makes me kind of think that elite pets aren't worth it, unless of course they have an ability I need to learn.

    1) How could you NOT find Sooty ;). He is in the cave up the hill, easier to find than village Thelsamar imho...

    2) Soloed him as a level 20 shadow specced priest... had to use 1 potion. Nice xp: 580 for the kill, 775 for bringing it to first person, 1500 for bringing it to the second...

bad guys can be bugged sometimes.

I have even dealt with an inviso guy in Ashenvale.  With Hunter's mark, I can find anyone but this guy could shoot me (so I couldn't melee) and as far as my toon was concerned he was unfindable.

As far as Elite pets go:

Hunter forum is great for this discussion, but SOME elite pets have different stats than their category (cat, bear, scorpid, etc.)

I just tamed Broken Tooth, a favorite but difficult to find rare spawn, who is identical to all cats, except his attack speed is 1.0  his DPS is the same of course, but that is apparantly a nightmare for casters to deal with (my pally has Spiritual Focus, so it's not much of a problem.)

Some pets will be faster too, but I think that's high level AV wolves or some such creature.  I leveled a regular cat to "The Rake"'s current level and they were the same, but his attack speed is faster too (1.2)

If you look on the map then its easy enough to find the cave. Is he inside it or outside? At any rate, I think I'll try to find a healer to heal me while I tame just incase ;)

For a Horde person, is it worth it to come up all the way thru Hillsbrad, Arathi, Wetlands, and run past the guards in Loch just to tame this guy? From the way that everyone is whooping his behind, I'm thinking that he's not so good of a pet, but I think he'd be better than an Ashenvale Bear. Can someone plz give me advice? <_> =O

Just for those that are looking for him/her, sometimes Ol' Sooty is down the hill and a bit south east, closer to the Stonesplinter encampment. I ran into him in the valley down there when I was about 15 or 16 and wasn't expecting anything. I ran but came back later and killed it.

For the record, I have established definitive proof that Ol' Sooty is indeed a she, despite the quest referring to her as a he. As evidence, I put forth that I tamed her with my hunter, and used her agains the undead sailors outside Menethil, who curse their opponents, making them undead.

When the curse is applied to Ol' Sooty, sure enough, she comes back as a female undead.

I'm glad to offer this proof to all of you. :)

For the record, elite pets stats do not have elite stats once they are tamed.
their stats revert to a normal creatures stats and your characters armor is factored in as well as your stamina (health)
elite pets aren't anything special but some of them just look cool.

this is the easiest elite I ever fought, I soloed him at lvl 18, with my HOLY specced priest (draenei), no potion used/other buff than my own, thing I couldn`t do with my demon warlock in his early lvl. I wonder if a shadow priest is really good at all for soloing... The bear has around 1,4k health, hits hard (around 45dmg on 30% dmg reduction). He respawns pretty fast, and he wanders between his cavern and the bears at the bottom of the place. Even though I said he was easy, you still need to use about everything you have.
