I'm a rogue and have never had a problem killing things several levels higher if I can get them alone. When I first encountered these shield guards almost every fight ended in me nearly dead until I realized that the red shield hurts you for about 85 dmg everytime you land a hit. Good thing is they stop attacking too. So for rogues, whenever you see the red shield pop up just stop attacking and let your energy regen, once you find this out these guys are easy.

As suggested above, the (nonobvious to me) trick  was realizing that when their red shield goes up they WILL NOT MOVE so just back up and laugh at them, thow/cast, until the shield goes away.  I died several times before working this out, and it's a looong jog back from the graveyard.

This is easily the most ANNOYING quest ever for me as a rogue. Casters, you have no idea. I even just created an account at thottbot just to report of this totally fucked up quest. First of all, there are only a few of them that actually aren't linked, but rest assured, with their totally insane aggro range, the shield guards patrolling the area will easily spot you and come to aid immiedatly. Secondly, the Red Shield they do makes you take damage by hitting them. 85 damage per melee hit I do, which is a sick amount for a rogue considering it takes me like half a sec (in the time I get in 2-3 attacks, taking 250 damage) before I get to react and turn around, whilst I make another hit and take even more damage. I run away 20y or something, start bandaging or whatever, the shield stops and he comes running towards me, voila I descide to engage him again, but OF course the second I touch  him again (doing rougly 3 hits straight up) he turns red again and my health starts to fall. Finally when they are down to 10-15% or so they start running, of course in the direction of his fellow teammates. But no worries, he can STILL put up the red shield while trying to escape and if you are really unlucky (like me) he will aggro them at the same time as he will put on a red shield. Now the only choice I have is to either escape or kill it and die. Running away is futile since you will be low on health anyway allready and with the daze performed by 3 it would be a mircale to survive without vanish.

I have met mobs who have performed that shield 8 times in the same fight, not letting me touch it ONCE before turning it back on, literarly I have hit myself to death from 100% to 0% health.

Add to this that I have found 2 Tokens in about 40 kills and that the only reason I continue this quest is cause I dont want a fucking game to beat me, no way. Big gratz to constantly come up with new ways to piss me off!

If you think this quest is hard for a rogue 30 and above, then you don't know how to play one.
          1) You have to pull the guards away so that even if they do run (and they should not run fast enough if you use cripple poison) they don't call reinforcements... that's pulling 101.
          2) Never melee a guard that has the shield up. Simply press "t", back away and throw/shoot/bandage. As soon as their shield is down they'll come to you. When they do, use stun (whichever way you prefer) and backstab. Rinse, repeat. Moreover, if you keep backing away from the guard while you fight, there is a good chance they will never use the shield.
          3) Use DOTs liberally (opening move, poisons). This strategy will pay handsomely for those "rogues" that don't backstab (ie sword rogues).

The guards die so quickly its not even funny. My guess is that even a 28 rogue with self made potions would be able to handle these. So, stop whining and develop a strategy.

Two of us did this one last night, level 31 warlock and priest. We just took the road north from Tarren, looking for yeti in the Hercular's Rod quest. Had to kill a couple level 34 ogres to get to the yeti, and going through the yeti took us west to a field outside Dalaran.  Scouted out Dalaran and the internment camp with the eye of Kilrogg and decided to try this stone token quest.

It was a lot easier for us killing the guards than the yeti, so we cleared the perimeter and went in, cleared the yard, and found we had started to do our orange prison-breakin quest, so we kept on going. Cleared out the building, and then went into the buildings outside the fence. Had a very close battle with a level 36 mage at the very top of a building, but got the yeti quest, this quest, and the prison breakin quest done all at once, walking in one big circle.

We didn't have the red-shield/melee problem, maybe because we're casters. I used a succubus and corruption, agony, shadow bolt, wand on the guards. The succubus was useful in seducing them when we aggro'd more than 2 at a time. For casters, curse of tongues, corruption, shadow bolt, and just drained their mana while the succubus attacked them. We usually didn't draw more than 2 attackers, and mostly worked on one mob at a time.

The drop rate must just be variable. My partner had 10 stones before I had 5, but as we fought our way back out, I picked the other 5 up quickly. Of the 2 quests we were doing at once in there, the drop rate on this one was more of a problem than the difficulty of the "prison break-in" quest, so just had to be patient.

I'm a dagger rogue on a pve server so Alliance is no problem. I was able to easily handle this at level 31... even as a melee class.

Your best friends here are going to be crippling poison and a whole lotta bandages. I have 225 first aid so I can buy and use heavy runecloth bandages meaning I only need about 5 seconds to fill my life back up to full.

Try to clear the solo patrols around the linked pairs first. Then stealth and sap one of the paired stone guards once you've cleared the patrols. Use the time to take the other stone guard out. Their shield, once you have timing down, is no problem. It announces itself with a sound (the same sound you hear when you skill up at a trainer) before it goes up fully giving you plenty of time to back away or untarget if you pay attention and look for it. Even if it gets up fully before you can stop attacking or back away I've only ever hit the shield three times, meaning you'll take 255dmg in a worst case scenario. Once it's it's up you'll have plenty of time to bandage to full health if you need or to begin your ranged attack.

The best way to take the stone guards out fast is to open with Cheap Shot, Backstab, Gouge, Backstab, Kidney Shot, Backstab, Eviscerate. For me that formula equalled a very quick demise for the Stone Guard and usually without even allowing them to pull up their shield spell even once. I am not entirely sure but I believe that when stunned they can't get their shield off. They can proc it in the short time between stuns but if you are fast and have good timing you can keep their window of opportunity very small indeed.

I haven't noticed any corelation between percentage of health and the shield spell proc so I beleive it is a random event with a high percentage chance to proc in general, meaning they can get it off whenever as long as they are not incapacitated. Try to keep them incapacitated.

The crippling poison handles running. At 50% movement and 20% health you can take them out long before they can bring their buddies into the mix.

Conditions never stay optimal though, and chances are you will find yourself having to face two or three at a time while an annoying out of sight caster throws phantoms at you like a Congo line at a bad wedding. Don't panic. The phantoms hit for minimal damage at best. Even a crit from them is less than 40dmg. All they really do is keep you from bandaging. Focus on the guards. If you're facing multiples be ready to switch targets when you hear the sound announcing their shield going up. Take them out as fast as possible. Continue to ignore the phantoms and go take the caster out once the guards are down. If you get well and truly overwhelmed, vanish and try again.

I was able to survive a 3-on-1 and even one 4-on-1 using these guidelines.

For rogues this is just takes a bit of thinking....sneak around the camp there are two patrolling pats (usually a guard and a caster) Truely the best way to kill off a guard as a melee class is when you see the shield go up stop attacking IMMEDIATELY and attempt to get within shooting/throwing range. For the casters its quite simple use kick or pummel or shield bash etc.

When I did this quest and got to 8 stone tokens, my fellow friend, only having 3, decided to be a pussy and said "he had to go".  I tried to solo the last of the two tokens as a 31 fire mage in dalaran, thinking it was easy, but with all the elemental slaves and summoners and all the aggroeing and dying, I decided to whip up thotbott.  Ignoring all the rogue complaints, I found that I should go to the internment camp, not dalaran itself.  With that, the enemies and aggroing got easier, the drop rate got better, and every thing was finally ok instead of everything being a disastrous mess.

So under any condition, do not make my mistake, and go to the internment camp, not dalaran.

If you pull more than 2 doing this quest, you really need to learn to pay attention. The only mobs that are connected are the gate guards, and there are only 2 of them that are together. Ever.

Learn to pull. Watch for wandering mobs. The ones outside of the compound are easy to pick off. Grab a guard while the inner mobs are far away, pull back, and kill the 2 guards. Go back and take out the wanderers on the inside.

There is no reason to ever have to go inside the compound if you've got ranged attacks. Every mob can be lurred out. If you have to get up close and personal to a mob, do it, then run back out, and kill them where you can be safe.

And yes, that red shield hurts, but all you have to do is stop meleeing with the mob and you won't be hurt. Ranged damage and DoTs won't do blowback damage to you while the shield is up.

A tip for hunters and locks: The Follow command is a wonderful thing. If you're dealing with a mob that doesn't have long-range attacks, send in the pet, let them pick up aggro, then tell them to Follow. Once they're back to a safe spot, tell them to attack again. It'll save you from dying at the hands of unwanted pulls.
