I farmed these damn things for nearly 8 lvls. I went everday to the Lethlor ravine thinking that i would get one as easily as I got my Emerald and Crimson whelps, but it took just a little while longer lol. I got my crimson after 4 hrs, my emerald after about 1 week of 2hrs+ per day, and fINALLY i got my dark whelpling yesterday after i had already been once that day, I decided to get back on and try a to kill just a few more..I killed 1, logged off for about 5 min to get dinner and then right as i relogged, one spawned and attacked me.....it was the one, i couldnt beleive it:) I had nearly given up but because whelplings give such good drops and exp i decided to go back that last time, lol. took long enough:)lol i'm a nerd.

All this obsessing over how many mobs you had to whack to find your Dark Whelpling, and nobody answers half a dozen repeated questions from others saying Does It Do Anything??
So listen up - NO, it doesn't do anything special, it's just a cosmetic pet toy like the tabby cat and horned owl and brown snake etc. The only difference is that it's very rare and different looking and guaranteed to start conversations when you summon it.
I keep mine out as much as I can. He's good luck.
A little while ago I've been farming for this whelpling for 2 days. So this guildie of mine was wondering what i was doing so long in the badlands. I told him that i was trying to get a whelpling and i killed over more then 2000 for it. He felt sorry for me and offered me a hand, so i agreed. He said that i could have the whelpling of course when it drops.
So we kill the last one of the south part and what you think it drops. And you never guess what, he picks it up and summons it. O.O ( grrrr ) so i kick him from our duo group and he asks why ....why??? what you think yourself! and then he starts telling me he's so sorry. ( yeah whatever ) if i only would have known he would screw me over like that ... :( since then i never found another whelpling again

I've had a dark whelpling for a while now and today(7 april 2006) I got my disgusting oozeling.
Tips if you don't wanna be bored while grinding, is to have a good guild with a funny guild chat, makes time fly away, this is what made me forget how boring it was when I was hunting for my dark whelpling :). Another tip is to read a web comic from the beginning to the end while you'grinding. I read pvponline.com while hunting for my oozeling, but you can also check out machall, gucomics, penny-arcade and ctrl-alt-delete. This only works for meele classes like druid, shaman, hunter, warrior and rogue. Maybe warlock can do it to with a little wanding. Podcasts is also nice :) Listening to "The Dawn and Drew show" while grinding Timbermaw rep :) Just shift your attention to something else other than the thing you're killing and it feels that it goes much faster :). Took me 12 and 1/2 hrs to get one, but I finally got one. There are two valleys where these things are, one to the north and one to the south of the big open area with the dragons. The one in the north is hard to get to, so I had it to myself much of the time.
These are a 1 in 3000 drop, so be patient if you insist on getting one (much hate hate hate to those who got it first drop :P) I now have the complete set. 4 hours on the reds, 8 and 1/2 on the greens. My recommendation if you don't care which whelpling you get, go for the red. Much more mobs, lvl 24-26, and higher drop rate (1 in 1000). The darks are too rare and there aren't enough dreaming whelps, not to mention it stinks to have to kill the adolescents when they don't drop whelplings :/

I've grinded the red (not so long), green (3+ hours), and now the black (2+ hours). Rough guesses anyway.
Not one of the whelplings yet, but I suspect that is because I have only dropped a few hundred of them. The odds are against me having one yet. I am not saying that everyone is lying on here, but I know that a good number of them are. Do the math on these and you'll see about a 1 in 4000 drop rate. Yes, it is possible (even probable) that a couple of people got lucky and dropped them fairly quickly. But as many as have posted here? Yeah right. I keep at them because they are good experience, drop quickly, and have decent drops. The prospect of getting a whelpling is a nice bonus that keeps my interest in grinding them a bit longer (rather than questing all the time). So those of you getting discouraged, you either have to realize that the odds are against you or suck it up and buy one from the auction house. Happy hunting. Level 41 Orc Hunter Blackrock (PVP)

The thing to remember about the whelp drops, Not everyone that goes out will get it in the first 20 hours, or even the first 30, If you do keep going you will get one, But Then there are those that go in for 15 min and get two
For me on the red ones it was like that, level 24 and 25 both I got a whelp, didn't see another, started grinding on greens at level 30, Now at level 39 starting on blacks, I have never seen a green whelp drop, Things to remember while farming them, if you are farming for a whelp...don't Farm for the whelp, _and_ the cash, and flame sac's they drop, In my case for the skins as well... Getting frustrated with farming mine I got fed up when I got to my 3rd full bags of loot to vendor that I decided I'd start keeping a picture record of all the grey trash I'd picked up as a way of showing just exactly "HOW MUCH FUN!!!" farming these whelplings is.
I'd gotten my Azure Whelpling in only 2 days and I forget how many hours I'd put in but it was something like 8 hours each day. This Dark Whelpling was much worse though. Not only because of the amount of kills but because while farming it I had 3 alliance and two horde that came at different times to compete with me for the mobs and two of the alliance got theirs within the first 10-20 kills... ugh anyways this was my Third and Fourth vendor trips when I finally got the Whelpling. I think I killed easily 2000+ mobs this time, and at this point I think I'm not even going to try for the Emerald Whelpling given the minescule amount of mobs and the fact that they have shared spawn points.

Best thing to do is wait til you're 80 to start farming this bugger that way you can one hit and move on from each whelp quickly. I've found that the Badlands area is the one you want to be in since all the whelps spawn so close together. If you're lucky enough you're the only one farming them, and moving from one spawn area to the other one means all new fresh whelps each time. Also, my advice for you if you want to make profit out in Badlands is have mining on your char. I made 1400+g just from the mithril ore alone. Anywho, I finally got my Dark Whelp after 2400 kills. Mobinfo3 is a nice addon to have if you want to keep track of how many kills it's gonna take you. Just have to mess with the settings a bit to get it to fit your needs. First night I spent 6 hours grinding. Got 200 mithril ore along with about 15 greens. Second day I spent 7 hours grinding. Got another 200 mithril, 1 blue, 15 greens, and countless gems from the mining.
This is not for the faint of heart. It's all up to luck. It could take over 5000 kills or 2 as you all have read. Good luck to all you who undertake this great endeavor! -Tum

You want one for yourself, best start farming it. If you want it for money, check the damn price it goes for on your server, otherwise you could be seriously wasting your time. As a leveling Death Knight at 68 I grinded here for this whelp drop for the cash for my epic flyer and cold weather flying as well as getting my skinning and mining up, the veins are mithril, sometimes iron, gold and truesilver.
I have one on Dragonblight that I'm selling for 1000g. (cheap compared to what they go for on our AH usually... don't want to look greedy :P)
Anyway I'm saving for flight training so if you're interested, send a letter to Rachelgreen and I'll cod it to you asap.
Took 30 minutes i almost had a heart attack when i got it. Its sooo cute! i love it! Gonna keep farming i guesse to give to friends. ^.^ happy hunting!

UPDATE: Yay got it on my 275th kill in the badlands, I can't believe my luck!! GL to all those still farming! SIDENOTE: While I was farming, another person whispered me and asked if I would help summon for his Ulda run. Well I was really into my grinding and didnt want to have to stop BUT I am a strong believer in karma so of course I went and I think that is why I was so lucky. Moral of the story is: be nice and maybe God will smile upon you and you will be rewarded with a little whelpling buddy! :)
Lol I'm a pet collector so I go and start farming there is a 44 and a 39 druid killing the badlands so i leave them be and we meet up I accidently stole a kill from them 39 kills after I started it dropped lol they got mad when they asked if I got it but they didn't mind they just got there too. Moral of the story

I have been grinding this little bugger for just under week, several hours a day (anything from 2 hours to over 5 or 6). I went from lvl 41 to lvl 46 just from grinding these whelps, but on the plus side, I earnt probably about 1k in gold from mining ore and skinning and a fair few good drops.
I've spent today considering giving up on this because of the amount of lvl 80s running in and constantly stealing my kills and wiping out the area so I'd have to wait for respawns, only to have my kills stealed again. But then a guy asked me to help him with the Broken Alliances quest because he was far too low lvl, so I thought I might as well. Did the quest for him, and whaddya know, the second I leave his party, the next whelp I killed dropped a Dark Whelpling! :D KARMA ROCKS!
One day someone had heard of a little dragon pet they could call their own. Now he heard he could have great riches too. So he traveled to badlands in search of this whelp, and said he wouldnt come back untill he had one to call his own, and maybe another to sell. He spend hours slaying every whelp in sight, just to find a tooth and maybe a weapon drop every time.Then he saw a strange whelp flying about, instead of black and orange, he was all gold. He was the strongest of whelps, and was very very rare to find, only one in the world. So he grabbed his mighty sword and sheild to go fight the whelp. The whelp bit and swung his tail, but he was no match for the mighty human. He fell and what dropped a golden whelp companion! He was the only one to have one. So good luck finding it!
Ok I know, there is no such thing as gold whelps but I wanted to share a lil story here wit thottbot so please dont say anything bad about it. ^.^ Add Comment
