So one day I was bored and actually wanted to see how often I could catch firefins and blackmouths... So here is what I caught after 20 minutes of fishing on the Menethil docks:
29% - Blackmouths: 12 9% - Firefins: 4 62% - Other: 26 Total Fish: 42 This was with my fishing level effectively around 170 (skill was 120 + nightcrawlers) So unless someone knows of a better place for firefins, I'd say it'll take you quite a while to make significant amounts of fire oil. Just as a side-note, Oily Blackmouths were going for about 2 gold per 10 when I checked the AH. Which means if I sat there and fished for an hour or so I could make a nice round 10 gold between the firefins and the blackmouths. Just my 2 Copper I wish you could fish with polearms...
In Menethil Harbor, between Deepwater Tavern and the old Osprey shipwreck (the shipwreck a bit southeast on the map) ... I found a school of Firefin snapper.
I was working on the Morbent Fel quest for the ingots and saw a school of red fish swimming around. As soon as I saw it, I jumped on shore, equipped my rod and fished away. I must have gotten 8 or 9 Firefin Snappers before the school eventually left. One way to see the school from above the water is there will be a circle on the top of the water ... sort of like a disturbance of something swimming beneath it. That's a good marker to look for. Try to get your bobber to land in or around the circle for best catching results! There were also several schools of Oily Blackmouth fish around the other shipwrecks in the area too.
With 1.9, you can now find schools of Firefin Snappers in Cragpool Lake west of the loggers in Stonetalon Mountains. But... it's not just a school of fish, it's an "oil spill", complete with a black goo and a barrel floating in it.

WHenever I need some snappers, or some money I always take my Horse to Dustwhallow Marsh. Start at the graveyard near Theramore, and walk along the beach till Ratchet. Many spots there, and almost no competition, like in STV

I don't know if it's any different on your servers... but my little secret sweet spot for Finefins and Blackmouths are in Desolace. If you just run the coast at Shadowprey Village (horde) then when your done farming there... go north to the next open coast line.. there's about 5 or 6 more schools there. By the time you're done farming one area, you can go back to the other and it's replinished! Happy Fishing! Confirmed This is the best place to get firefins, also watertight chests when you cast into the floating debris. Go up and down the river there and you will get 20+ stack in no time. Went fishing in Stonehale mountains and caught 34 in 40 minutes with a lure on. As well as a bunch of greens from the floating wreckage. Just start at the top of the rover and make your way south. By the time your done the top ones respawn. Expect to get 3-5 on average from each pool with a low of 2 and a high of 7. Goodluck :)

Just got done spending 1 hour farming for Firefin Snappers in Windshear Crag, Stonetalon Mt. Payout was 48 Firefin Snappers, and some stranglekelp. Just follow the pool of water and keep hitting the oil spills. Pretty much every cast i put in came up with one. No oily blackmouths which surprised me. Started fishing skill at 84+50(nightcrawler) and ended at 131+50.
Havent tried Shadowprey village coast which i hear is great also, but for low lvls who need the firefin for Alch then i think Windshear Crag is the place to be. Happy Fishing. Bobaphat-Hakkar server
instead of standing in one place fishing, i started walking north on the west coast of stranglethorn vale, looking for schools of firefin.
to my suprise these schools was plentyfull 1 hour later i had over 60 firefinns, 20 blackmouts and almost 40 stranglekelp. from floating wreckage i got boxes wich gave me 11 green items to sell, bolts of mageweave/silk and rune cloth, and a book that taught me the "find fish"-skill. this skill is a tracking skill that makes all schools and wreckage apear on the minimap, making them easy to see. if your looking for firefin snapper or blackmouths i recommend doing this. The best place I have found by far is in the Windshear Crag in Stonetalon Mts. It requires fishing of 55 but there are oil spills all along the little creek that flows down from the big lake. Lots of Firefin there.

I have found while fishing in Stonetalon Mountains in both Blackwolf River and Cragpool Lake, which are listed with the highest drop rate percentage, that you have to fish in the Oil Spills only. That is the only place I have caught them there.
I got these really early!! When you're questing around the north edge of the Stonetalon Mountains, where millions of freakin Venture Co Loggers and Deforesters are, there are often oil spills in the river- aka schools of Firefin Snapper.
I found three oil spills randomly while I was questing and fished them all. Oil spill = Firefin school
Menethil harbor is a good place if you also need Oily Blackmouths. I fished for about 45 minutes on the coast north of the cemetery and caught 18 firefins and 22 blackmouth. Also several chests had 5 bolts of woolen cloth, 1 heavy leather, 1 Heavy Blasting powder, and 6 Rumsey Rum Ales. If your a herbalist, you'll probably get over 20 stranglekelp. The key is to look for the schools or for the floating debris. Good luck! I think it's a great spot.
hey i just wanted to ask: is firefin snapper so many gold on AH??
im selling these on my server for 10g a stack and i also sell balckmouths at the same price its good money for a lvl 28
