I'm a lavel 20 warrior.  When I'm in the Battlegrounds it seems everyone there is much higher in level and I seem to die alot.  I'm fairly new to this game and I try new things, however this doesn't always sit well with my "teamates", who really don't believe in teamwork unless its to blame a loss on the lower ranking person there, ME.  I queuss what I'm trying to say is when you people are fighting in Warsong Gulch be patient with the Noob's they are trying, no one likes to lose but it does and will happen.  Aside from that as soon as I understand the concept better (capture the flag) I will probably have more fun.  L8ter.

Well in ALL Battlegrounds, all the battlegrounds are split up by lvl. For instance, the lowest lvl you can go in a bg is at 9, and it goes up to lvl 19, then when you hit 20 you go with a whole new set of people from 20-29 then 30-39 then 40-49 then 50-59 then 60-70 (only AV goes from 60-70 so EYE OF THE STORM, ARATHI BASIN, and WARSONG GULCH go from 60-69 and all 70, but Alterac Vally goes from 60-70.) :) there ya go man thats why you get owned cuz ur lvl 20

I have one hunter char that I play in WSG currently in the 40-49 group. I have seen alliance win about 50% of the time. Way more than when I played 30-39. Yes it all comes down to working together. I think as players begin to enter more instances they realize that the best way to bring down your opponent is for everyone to concentrate on the same target. The horde at lower level seems to understand this. But the SOLO grinders on alliance side need to learn it.
Often you get the one fellow who runs off alone and is able to stand alone and maybe get a flag who says he don't need any help. Ha! Stupid! If you made it solo its only because the Horde was busy chopping up your fellow players while you ran around!
I very seldom get beaten by a solo horde (even a shaman). With my pet and stun & trap I can hold my own against lvls 2 higher than myself. Problem is I very seldom get to prove that cause that horde member either already has a team mate with him, or one is on the way. I Always love to have at least one other player with me, the more the better! Even when taken out, we take one or two with us!
Alliance is just every man for himself. Period. Take the victory, and credit or take the loss and place the blame.
Horde spend more time in WSG with people they play with often and know how to work with those people.
90% of horde WSG is teams that are used to working together. 90% of Alliance WSG is PUG. Whoevers turn it is in queue.
The horde knows when its up against a good group of alliance players and their whole battle strategy changes! Thats when the game gets really good! Once an alliance group shows its working together. We win a lot more often than we lose!

Imagine everyones surprise when I told them my pet couldn't hold aggro!

I actually have two primary pets. One I use outside the BG's that has dash/bite/claw/growl and one I use INSIDE the BG's that has dash/bite/claw/prowl. NO GROWL! Everyone knows that pets can't hold aggro against a PVP player. Growl only works on computer controlled opponents. Since there are none of those in the BG's, why waist a limited talent spot with growl? Try putting your pet on prowl/aggresive/stay right at the flag while you run upstairs and guard with long-range shot.  While your opponent runs around looking for that pets owner, you can get in several cheap shots! And you can still keep Dash to use as you like along with 2 attacks! (bite/claw).

With a limited number of ability slots available on a pet it's best to have two so constant re-training isn't needed. Just don't forget to re-train or pull your non PVP pet out of the stables before doing quests NOT in the BGs! LOL Or you'll be explaining to your team why you pet can't hold aggro! :)

A lot of posters constantly advise that the reason the Horde wins in the WSG so often is because they work together much better than the alliance seems to have the ability to.
Some say its mainly because of the Shaman character alone, with other remarking that Horde heals their group better than we do, or has more magic users.
Even I (recently) have said its the rogues that have an unfair advantage in this short (Capture the Flag) type format and the game has become more of a "recapture" your flag so you can "capture" your opponents.
All of these areas need improvement alliance! Get more healers to come out. More MAGIC! & try your best not to get caught soloing, cause I guarantee you 90% of the time you won't be fighting a 'single' horde memeber. More often 3 or more.
The truth is the main problem is more obvious. LOOK AROUND!
The average lvl of all horde playing in the WSG BG (40-49) is high 48! There are very few if any low level 40's to be seen! The average lvl for alliance is 45 if we're lucky! Its not uncommon at all to find half your 10 players below medum level for that battleground! Tons of low lvl 40's that wouldn't go near  a creature 6 levels above them think they can help in the BG's? ONLY if you are a priest!
Do the math, Horde 5-48's, 5-49's prbably half BG Buffed. (Thats higher lvl alts buying & passing along the best possible gear).
                  Against Alliance 2-49's, 1-47, 4-46's, 1-45, and 2 more 44 or below!
Okay lets group up and have at each other?? Who do you think is going to lose? Friends I know this is the way bliz has it set up, and you want to get in the BG's and get PVP poinst. But you'll get more PVP points faster if we WIN in the BGs. So take the time to level up so you can help us win.

One of the best ways to get the flag to your base is (this is mainly for Alliance):

Have a Druid get the flag and use travel form to run across the field (Mages work too since they have Blink). Once the Druid/Mage gets there, have a Paladin or a Warrior take the flag and hide.

                My suggestion when hiding is:
If one or two horde find you and try to attack you, once they're killed, find a new hiding place. Because knowing horde, they will bring half or more of their team to get you, since they know where you are. Once you have a good hiding place, have at least three people stay with you (need a healer), and then have the rest of the team to go find your flag.

Alliance never look much into this. Hope this opens some eyes and ideas.

                Thanks.

Im guessing not alot of people read this, but all the posts seem to have bits of information.

Warsong Gulch (WSG) is available at level 10,and that bracket goes to level 19. Each bracket continues that pattern, 20-29 and etc.

First, I have played Horde and Alliance on the same server (Staghlem) and will tell you, without question the Horde is alot better at WSG than Alliance, becuase mainly, the Alliance likes to zerg. Horde people tend to stick together in 2-3 groups, most of the time, 2.

The object of WSG is to capture (cap) the enemies flag. You accomplish this by running into the opposing base, grabbing the flag , and returning back to your base where your flag stands.

If the opposing team also has your flag, you will not cap. The person who is capping the flag must have their own flag planted. Which is part of the fun of WSG. Not only do you have to attack and grab their flag, you must have people on "defense" or "D" so that they wont come get your flag.

Part of Alliance ( on Staghlem) 's biggest issue , is that they all want to fight in middle field instead of fighting in the horde base. People tend to prefer racking up the number of kills (HK's) as opposed to actually winning the game. People will say that you get more honor from winning, which you do, but alas, people who are parking level 19 characters so they can do 10-19 BG's arent relly concerned about honor, they are there to kill people, and that is their fun. I can accept that.

For all the people who want honor, I would recomend only doing light Battlegrounds until lvl 55 at least. Most of the gear that you can buy from rewards of reputation and rank, etc are minimal lvl 55 req, and the good stuff is all lvl 60. So, unless you just enjoy getiing in a BG once in a while I wouldnt even consider "grinding" rep un til the 50's.

That said, there are a couple ways to que in to a battleground. You can que in from the major cities, and buy your rank reward in Stormwind ( outside SI:7, or Horde in Org. ) You can also que in directly in where they stations are in the zones. WSG is in Ashenvale ( alliance ) or Barrens (horde). Arathi Basin ( Arthai highlands , horde and alliance) or Alterac Valley ( Alterac Mountains for both factions)

To purchse the specific gear for each faction, you have to be at the outposts for each specific encampment. Each level of rep unlocks new gear for you to purchase. Obviuosly, revered and exalted is where the good stuff is. AV is easy to reach max exalted, and AV also has alot of neat quests you can do that are given from NPC's in the encampment in Alterac. I would recomend doing all these quests as soon as you can, as you get good rewards and increased rep bonus for completion.

Hope that helps, see you in AV !

Now, all the rewards can be gained from the appropriate venders (eg. pvp rank rewards from the officer's lounge npc's in Stormwind and Orgrimaar; faction ones from the faction venders outside the battleground entrances themselves).

Level requirements still apply of course, but now currency needed is tokens from the different battlegrounds and honor points.

The main item people will lack is the requisite amount of honor.  You can start acculumating the hundred+ BG tokens from WSG (that most would like by lvl 60 for items) at lvl 10....even if you lose most of the time, the occassional game as the character progresses will net a good number of tokens by the time you can actually spend them on good stuff (ie. end-game worthy pvp/pve equipment).  The secret is to not get too discouraged if you and your groups are not winning every game, or even your share of games.  Persevere, take the lumps, get your tokens, and move on.

The AB tokens can be gathered from lvl 20, and those games tend to be faster then wsg a lot of the time, so it is easier to get them anyway.  Alterac valley tokens will be the bugger to accumulate, as those  games take a while, and are bugged to high heaven right now (week after the patch).

The new honor system really gimps the amount of honor per kill, so it takes a long time to get the best items (eg. 40,500 honor for the lvl 60 epic staff for casters).  Seems the higher level you and your opponents are, the faster the honor builds up.

A seemingly smart way to go after this stuff is to play BG's now and then as you are leveling, get your tokens (suggest 100+ of each if you can), and then grind honor in alterac valley when you are over 52.

In the end (lvl 58+), you will be able to equip yourself in the epic sets and weapons that used to be reserved for the top 1-2% of a server, without all that camping BG's for months and months at high level when the fun dungeons may be calling you. This is also a somewhat attractive strategy for those of us not involved in major raid dungeons (just not liking the dynamics of raid groups so far, and molten core I find boring as heck) who cannot always hold our own against the mobs/players we may encounter.

Yes, you can try running dungeons like UBRS, LBRS, Scholo etc. a LOT to get 'free' set pieces etc., but we all know that the odds of 'your' set piece dropping are remote each time, and in larger raids, you often will have competition on top of that. Saving up en route to lvl 60 with casual BG's and then being able to just go to a vender for some powerful items is very, very appealing.

I have run Warsong Gulch (WSG) in 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-59 brackets on both Horde and Alliance characters and most classes. My druid probably has more flag captures (caps) than most of the people he BGs (enters a battleground) with has Honorable Kills (HKs.)

Advice for going in as a character:
You will do much better in any BG if you are closer to the top of the level limit so a 29 is going to have an easier time in BGs than a 20. The other thing that will give you an advantage is your gear, having all of the good quest rewards for instances your level and even collecting BG reward gear will help a lot. If you can't find stuff for every armor slot there are usually always deals in the Auction House (AH) especially if you look for green items with the stats you need for your class. If a blue item is 10% better than some other green item, you have to decide if you need that extra edge that will cost more.

At the extreme end of gear are the 'twinks' who have exceptional gear and enchants that are near impossible to get without the help of higher level players. This can include rewards from red instance quests, expensive world drops and expensive enchants.  You do not need this to excel in BGs, you can compensate for gear by using skill and knowledge of your class.

                The dilemma:
The biggest actual problem with BGs like WSG is that there are no lasting tallies of the objectives. When in an actual battleground, the goal is to complete that BG's objective (capture the flag for WSG), or win! The truth when BGs were introduced to WoW that still holds true post Burning Crusade release is that winning gives you way more honor than collecting HKs. The honor determined your PvP rank (Sr Sgt in under 1k HKs at 39, thank you!) and now it is the pivotal currency to buy the BG rewards. Similar to the prisoner's dilema (google or wikipedia for what the prisoner's dilema is) if a player tries to help win a BG they usually end up with less HKs than if they just try to kill everyone they see anywhere. This leads people to HK pharm (derogatory term for people who only BG to increase their HK count) and lowers the incentive to try and win the game.

Prior to Burning Crusade (BC) the Horde tended to win (at least up to the 59 bracket) WSG a lot more than the Alliance. There are many theories for this and mine include a higher average level in most Horde BG groups and that the average Horde player is likely older and more mature (there are several reasons for this, I do not want to start a flame war about it only to point out that I believe it to be true.) One of the theories was the whole pally vs shaman debate and having played both classes I can tell you that both have advantages in WSG and I think neither is superior. To me it would be like comparing the hunter to the druid (for the sake of WSG) as each of them has distinctly different advantages and disadvantages in WSG.

Post BC, there seems to have been an evening out of sorts although the Horde (up to 59) still seem to have a slight advantage.  The exception is the 10-19 bracket where way more Alliance twinks are seen than Horde twinks (it is easier to twink a 19 Ally due to a bigger player economy, player base and the levels required for the lower level instances where you collect twink gear.) With the cross pollination of Shaman and Paladin it is clearly obvious to me that the problem with either class is in the knowledge and skill required to play them effectively in WSG and that both can be extremely worthy opponents.

To me the best part of BGs is winning. I don't get any sadistic pleasure out of building a powerful toon only to brag about how many people with a fraction of my hitpoints I have killed, I just like to win. Winning gives more honor and marks than HK pharming and makes it easier to purchase the rewards.

The best advice I can give to BGers is go in as close to the top of the bracket as you can.  A 32 not only is lower level but has not yet gained many of the spells that a 39 of their class has available to excel in BGs. There can even be a difference between a 25 and a 26 since the later will have new and possibly previously unavailable spells.

I also suggest you get the best gear you can. This does not have to be overpriced blue or epic gear, it can simply be a better green item with stats you can use.  The easiest way to upgrade gear is to find the good quest rewards and drops from the instances near your level.

I've been reading the comments re low lvl players and winning or losing ..... i don't think it's as simple as 'low lvl players = losing'. I've played quite a few games where there have been close to half the team below 26 and i've thought, 'we're going to lose'. But, we haven't, to my surprise. Teamwork seems to be more important. Having lower lvl mages and range fighters and healers seems ok to me. The other thing i've noticed is that sometimes ppl are negative towards lower lvl players right at the start .... hardly helpful in engendering team spirit. Losing can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Re Horde vs Alliance .... there seem to be some Horde teams who practise a lot together. They think about strategy when new obstacles arise for them. I've been in a few Alliance teams now where there is hardly any communication ... hardly surprising then when we lose. Then there is the occasional person who is derogatory rather than encouraging to other players .... demoralising your teammates doesn't help win either. Horde aren't afraid to raid the Alliance base en masse either ... not always successful though. They frequently have healers and an entourage to protect the flag bearer after capturing the Alliance flag, so u have to go after all of them, especially the healers, as just attacking the flag bearer might not work. Attacking the Healers on the battlefiled is important too, and i've noticed often Alliance focus on melee. Horde use rogues a lot to hide in the Alliance base, so ppl on D would benefit from being able to detect stealth. Also, i've noticed that some of them seem to be able to heal very well and quickly .... i think some of the more serious Horde groups stock up on potions of healing and manna etc.

Believe it or not there are secrets to victory in WSG. The problem is it requires a massive amount of teamwork and assigned ranks. This is easiest if you bring your own groups and have them sign up for first available at the same time. It all revolves around strategy and two leaders(one offense, one defense) If you divide your raid leaving one group to defend and the other(s) to attack in a single war party you eliminate the problems of lack of defense and it's much harder for the rogues to pick you off. Traveling alone is extremely dangerous as rogues and druids in cat form(even more deadly as they can track you) will pick you off with ease(assuming you are not a melee class). Communication is key and sending the flag carrier off ahead is not the best idea. If possible try to surround the carrier and make sure he stays safe. In offense its best to let the players use whatever works best for them in defense certain classes should be in certain areas. Also a macro works well if your on defense.

                  /yell I need backup!
is a good macro and works well if your armor isn't that high chances are you'll get a rogue or some other form of backup in time.

                                        Defense Positions

Hunters: It works best if you are always on high ground taking your pet with you is a good idea as other enemy players will want your ground so you want a defense. Put a trap near your door (freezing is best) so if a rogue sneaks in you'll have warning. Don't forget to keep a flare near the flag.

Warriors: You don't really have a set spot as long as its near the area you'll need to defend. Station yourself on the floor with he flag and smash anything that comes your way.

Mages: You might want higher ground depending on what spells you enjoy. The Hunter should be willing to share his/her ledge just as long as they choose where they stand.

Druids: Choose whatever class role your playing that is where you should be.

Priests: If your shadow go for the ledge and snipe if your holy be out of the way of the main battle but within range to cast your heals.

Shamans: You probably want to be near the main entrance so you can drop your totems and cast your aoe spells. Wherever the battle is be in the middle.

Paladins: This all depends on what your gear is supposed to have you do. If your healing follow the holy priest path if your doing DPS you want to be somewhere you know you can dish out some pain.

Rogue: You want to be near the flag. Never near the door as when someone comes in you want to go unnoticed. Stealth near the flag and sneak around. An important part of your job is to protect those on the ledge sneak up there and try to take the attackers out. Some serious DPS is coming from there and its really important that they stay going. You can easily get up there and back unnoticed.

Warlocks: Ledge is good for you too. You can do most of your dot from a place where most people can't hit you which means your safe and their not.

Everyone: The enemy may try to distract and send the flag the other way. If thats the case use every snare and slowing skill you've got. Then when they can't run away, take them down.

If everyone works together its more honor, more exp, more tokens, and more fun for everyone. I write this hoping that it will help and improve the fun and honor in every WSG battle. No one likes losing 0-3 and no one likes a group where its every man for himself. Help each other, communicate, and plan your game. Good luck!

I have been playing priests (lots of priests) on different specs in order to learn about this class. It's much more challenging than playing a hunter; no pet, no leather, poor DPS, etc. Here's my take after spending a whole week at WSG with a very nice spec hybrid L19 Priest / Engineer. The Horde players understand teamwork in a way that Alliance just doesn't. Key mistakes that I see Alliance PUGs make over and over:

                    - Outrunning Their Healers, Alliance Rogues and Hunters will outrun their own healers. They rush out of range and get killed before the priest has time to even reach them. Horde is smarter than that. Horde waits for the healer. When they see the bubble pop, they know their healer is in range and they attack. Alliance will see their bubble pop, run at max speed for 15 seconds, notice that their bubble is gone, and they won't wait to see that bubble come back. MISTAKE! If that bubble doesn't come back, I'm not there, yet.

                    - Not Protecting Their Healers, I can't count the number of times I had two or three Horde DPS on my fanny and ran straight towards a group of Alliance DPS. AND THEY JUST STAND THERE AND LET THE HORDE KILL ME. Oh that's real bright. Any time there are three Alliance DPS on a Horde priest, the Horde DPS will strip those guys off in a heartbeat. Why? Because it takes 29 seconds to get that healer back on the grounds.

                    - Not Understanding The Math, The MAX CRIT for a DPS is roughly HALF my MAX CRIT. Do the math, people. An L19 Healer has a max crit that is over 500 points. That means that I can put health back more than twice as fast and someone can take it away. Losing 29 seconds of heal because the priest is dead is losing your team over 6000 points of health. Losing your rogue for 29 seconds loses your team 2800 points of damage. Do the math, people.

                    - Not Understanding Horde Tactics, Horde knows the math, so they take out the priests FIRST. Why do I wind up running across and open field with three max twink DPS on my fanny? Because the Horde players know the math! They know that if the priest is dead, they have 29 seconds of free killing. However, there is a way for Alliance to play it smart. If the Horde are chasing down your priest, and you really want to be stupid and not protect her, at least be smart enough to take advantage! OK, so you are using your priest for a Target Dummy. It's not the smartest move on the BG, but what the heck. THAT MEANS THAT THERE ARE TWO ALLIANCE PLAYERS WHO ARE NOT BEING COVERED! GRAB THE FLAG AND RUN!

This is in no way to be rude or disrespectful but it come off that way.  I have been doing BG for nearly 3 years now, and playing both Horde and Alliance I have learned a few things.
Lvl means very little compared to team work.  I hear less whining and insulting on the horde side.  I see teamwork on the horde side.  Healing is not the issue that Ally has, it is the simple fact then when playing a healer for the Ally NO ONE protects you.  You get killed in an instant because no one cares about you (other than insulting your for not healing them).  Horde protects you and tries to protect you as they would in an instance.

I prefer Alliance, better races and cities (to myself of course) but when playing Ally I have to ignore the stupid trade channel and simply understand that NO ONE will help with quests or with questions about anything.

Horde helps each other.  They win, simple.  Play as a team in WSG and you can win.  The entire team doing a single dumbass plan is still better than 10 people with 10 plans.

I hear ya dude. As a 46 holy priest i heal bgs from time to time. Here i am trying to heal everyone and half of the people just stand there and watch the enemy own me. Another problem i have is when im trying to heal someone thats low they will start to panic and run off in random directions making it impossible for me to heal them. It more often than not leads to their death and im next on the menu.

after not having done any of this i discovered how enjoyable it is at level 49. i was advised to wait UNTIL i was around 47 - 48 - 49 to try it, and now i, too, pass that advice along. You don't have to wait till the 40's, but here's an example:

                    If you're level 10, maybe wait until you're 18 - 19
                    If you're level 20, get outta there and wait till you're 28 - 29

and so forth! or you'll be at the 'bottom of the heap'.

Warsong was slightly confusing because of the multiple entrances, but i'm finally getting the hang of it ... :P
It's a simple capture-the-flag at heart. you want at least a couple people to stick around the flag at home though it may not seem necessary at the time! SO if you don't know what to do you can always stay right by the flag... you will see action regardless.

you can get up on the roof or the 'upstairs' ramp if you have a ranged weapon; nice advantage. watch out for all the magicking, there's a lot of magickal attacks up in them there parts.

encouraging each other really helps, yelling at each other 'WTF' does not. good luck!
