When you disenchant an item, a loot window appears and you can loot the essences/dusts you disenchanted. If you have selected a NPC at that time, Thottbot probably thinks you killed and looted that NPC (because there's a loot window) - this is why so many NPCs seem to drop magical stuff, although this is not true, of course. Same goes for the omnipresent Clam Meat and Morrowgrain.

Because I have lootlink, it shows the item's internal level. So I combed the AH and got like 6 reasonably priced item level 61-65 items. Bam, 14 illusion dust and 5 greater eternal essences. The disenchant skill appears in your spellbook when you learn enchanting.

You only get skill from disenchanting items up to 50 skill. This was not changed with the patch that limited item levels you could DE based on your skill, so even high level items won't give skill for DEing after you reach 50 skill.

You used to be able to disenchant high level items with enchanting skill 1, this was changed around the time of the Burning Crusade release.

You can disenchant soulbound items that are bound to the enchanter, other people's soulbound items can not be disenchanted, even in the 'Will not be Traded' window.

AFAIK only most equipable items above white can be disenchanted, no recipes. There are some equipable items that can not be disenchanted (Twilight Cultists set for one)

If someone else owns it(soulbound to them) them you cannot because you have to have it in your hands to disenchant.

You CAN disenchant (aka DE)a soulbound item, but only when it is YOURS. Soulbound items are usually questreward items and/or boss drops. You can tell if and item will be a soulbound item by looking at the top right corner in the item discription. On the item description it will say either "bind on pickup"(aka BoP) or "bind on equipped"(aka BoE). Soulbound items are the "bind on pickup". However, to get around not being able to DE  other players soulbound items, an enchanter can do the following. When running a dungeon/instance with a group and no one needs a bossdrop that's BoP, the group can agree for the enchanter to roll need and disenchant the item. After the enchanter DE's the item, the group can roll(type /roll) for the DE reward. Then the Enchanter can pass along the DE'd mats to the winner of the roll.

You guys are right enchanting is an expensive and difficult profession to learn, but I have some ideas(that I'm sure you guys know but here they are)

          1) Learn Enchanting

          2) Disenchant 60 -75 green items..you can buy these off the ah...you'll need the mats anyways...I always spend under 10s each. This takes you to lvl 40.

          3) Buy 100 Greater Magic Essence for no more than 1.5g a stack of 10. Create Lesser Magic Wands until 75, and Greater Magic Wands until 130-140.  And the best thing about this all is that you can vendor all these wands for the same price as what you bought your Greater Magic Essence...THAT MEANS ITS FREE TO 140.

          4) Now that feels good. But it is still not very hard to get to 225.  Take Enchant Bracer:Lesser Stamina to 150.  Should cost you about 20-40 Soul Dust = about 3-4g max.

          5) Now you are halfway there and have wasted very little gold.  Take Enchant Bracer:spirit to 180... It does not show here, but only costs 1 lesser mystic)  You wont need much maybe at max a stack of 10 Greater Mystic = 5g.

          6) Vision dust is the easiest thing in the world to get...If you dont know how to get it then then you probably can not read this guide that I am making anyway...For this reason take Enchant Bracer-Strength up to 200

          7) Lesser Wizard Oil is great to enhance damage for all you spell casters...And you get free skill-ups making it.  (it really helps if you are a tailor along with enchanter or know a tailor so you can gain these materials cheaper). (hint: disenchant things from 31-40 they turn Vision Dust)  Use this to skill up to 165-170 and store all of these in mail to an alt.  No waste all will be used so I consider this FREE!!!  This will take you to 215.

          8) At 215 the logical enchantment will be Enchant Cloak: Greater Defense]...however you will hit a roadblock at 225, because you will need to visit Ulda.  HINT: bring all the mats needed to lvl you to 255.  That way you only have to go once to get the rest of these enchants.  Now you can continue this up until about 230-235.

This guide has taken you to about 230-235 for 25G MAX and have recieved plenty of Lesser Wizard Oil that will last you til your 60 (or close to).

Please not that I did not create this guide, I just found it very useful and am trying to spread it around for more to see. gg.

Enchanting is not expensive. But to make it worth while, its best to be a few character levels above the item level youre going to D/E for mats, so you can kill the mobs with relative ease that have the drop you want.

Honestly, the best way to make any sort of progress in Enchanting isnt to take it as you make your first toon. Get your toon leveled to about 50-70 and take Enchanting, then come back and farm the old instances for drops to D/E for mats.

If you do happen to start Enchanting at the same time you make your first toon, pug groups for instances and run till you get tired of doing it, then D/E the greens you pick up and dont plan on using for mats. You get skill points for D/E'ing items if they are close to your level.

I started Enchanting with my Horde rogue, level 68 and in about a day and a half, my enchanting was at 300.

The key to it all is to have a huge supply of mats, thus you need to be able to farm. To be able to farm, you have to be high level to kill what you need without any headache. This means do not take Enchating at first level.

of course, don't forget if you/your alt or someone in your guild/circle of friends is levelling up their blacksmithing or tailoring or Leatherworking etc you can dishenchant their greens and OFTEN (not always but often) sell the mats for more than the sell value of the item and/or the cost of mats needed to make it.

My Alt is a lvl 300 skinner and 300 leatherworker.  I disenchant some of his various leather armours and can often get 2 to 3 times the AH price of the item.

Remember DE'ing is not an exact science. You may DE 20 identical items and you'll get 1 Soul Dust X times, 2 Soul Dust Y times and 3 Soul Dust Z times.  you may even once in a blue moon get a nice shard.

if you do any enchanting /Disenchanting I highly recommend you install the Enchantrix add on.

You cannot receive money from disenchanting directly.

The "Disenchant Value" listed on thottbot takes the average materials that drop from the item and adds their AH prices together.  For example:

Say you have a level 15 green sword.  You can sell this to a vendor for 5 silver--this is the vendor price.  This sword typically sells on the AH for 75s--this is the auction house price.  However, you can also disenchant it and you'll typically receive 1 greater magic essence, which (according to thottbot) sells on the AH for 90s--this is the disenchant value.  Keep in mind that this DE (disenchant) value is very server-specific.

When you look on thottbot for this item, the values will be:
                Vendor: 5s
                Disenchant value: 90s
                Auction value: 75s

So, in this case, it would be smart to disenchant.  In reality, there are very few items where the DE>AH values, so making money here requires more AH skill than just removing, Disenchanting, and relisting.

Lvling your enchanting is real easy, just buy some mats out of the AH and start chanting a piece of crap bracer or shield.  You can also make money (if your 60+) by running lvl 40 instances like ZF or SM ect.  When you get to a boss, kill him, loot him and disenchant whatever he drops for a shard that could sell for 7-12g in the AH.

Since I'm new to enchanting, and struggled with this...

When you learn Enchanting as a skill, you also, by default, learn disenchanting.  It's in your spellbook.  Look there and drag it to an action bar.

I kept trying to level enchanting hoping the trainer would teach it to me, but I already knew it. (me == idiot).  Serching the forums was semi-frustrating to find out how bad I suck.

Well, I recently started enchanting with my pally (just started out) and i was wondering, at what skill lvl do you get disenchanting?

I did ask someone else but he answered with "when you got the skill"... so now I'm confused.

Can just tell me at what skill lvl you get disenchanting?
