Ive spent about 5 hour straight just waiting and chatting and Ive only seen the scribe spawn once, the drop was the crappy staff.
Im sticking it out because the cat goes for 3K on my server, but Its probably less frustrating to go to the crater, at least you get more green stuff for your time.

There is clearly no pattern judging by other commments on here and other sites, its just a matter of waiting.
Rather than checking its much easier to use this macro.
/target dalaran spellscribe
The targeting works through walls and has a long range, you can camp at the entrance and just hit the macro, and it will detect if the scribe is there.
lol i just went on my hunter for old times sake (36 BE hunter) and i got it off my 3rd Shield Guard kill. How much is this thing worth to Alliance?
There are still "Siamese" cats and Siam doesn't exist in WoW either. More like the name was changed because of "Coon" as suggested above.
When it comes to 'Maine Coon Cat', the 'coon' part isn't meant to be derogatory, it's just short for 'Raccoon'. The 'Coon Cat' is called that beause its dark tabby coloring & pot belly make it look a little like a raccoon - at least the darker tabby versions. Now there are silver & orange coon cats. We had one in the family that had 6 toes on each foot, but I don't know why he needed the extra toes - he spent more time laying around than actually doing anything.

Go to Ambermill, go inside the main walls and you'll see a town hall type thing straight ahead.
On your left there is a little house, the guy/gal spawns in there.
Another spawn point is in the big house at the back downstairs. Also it can spawn in town hall.

There is a "Black Tabby" cat that walks around Exodar. It's about the size of an actual Maine Coon; it's huge and level 60. Does anyone know if that's the size of the actual pet?

No, I've heard others say that the Alliance cannot attack them. But you can obtain the cat on the neutral auction houses run by goblins.
i did fairly well with these. read this post yesterday, so went to have a look. found her straight away, killed her and she dropped the belt and the cat. so ive kep that cat for myself.
went back this morning however, he was there again, killed him, again dropped the belt and cat! this cat will be going in the mixed ah today i feel :) (sylvanas if anyones interested at all!)

Its a lot easier if you go up to dalaran and kill the summoners for them if your'e higher lvl. 50 druid, killed 100 in 45 mins, got it. Its about a 0.5% drop, maybe a little more. Dont waste all you time waiting for the spellscribe respawn...
I play a mid level lock and for some of us that may be kind of hard, so I kept going back to Ambermill, and after sevral attempts in slaying the spellcribe they finally droped the kitty!

killed this Spellscribe at least 10 times now, and all I get is this belt. Killed at least 2,000 summoners and guards of the dalaran. Either I have bad luck or this cat is just rare now!

i was doing a quset in dalaran for these stone things and managed to get one from the shieldguard people then it dropped again for me on in the nxt 4 kills :P (took me an hour for the first oen to drop)
I got the cat after 3kills. spawn time for me is roughly 4 hours.
In a Nutshell:
the kitty is a 1 in 7 drop from the spellscribe (the spellscribe is friendly to Alliance)&(he/she respawns about every 4 hours)
the kitty is a 1 in 1,500 for the other people in dalaran/alterac mountains

Farmed for about 1o minutes and got one. Left my char in the area and logged in randomly, second time i found her the tabby dropped. Have seen her in the main building and the smaller building on the left.

Yes, but you need to be horde. They are ALWAYS friend to alliance, even before WotLK. So nothing changed after the expansion except for the lack of purple bubble.
I read about this a couple days ago, I'm ally but I also have a 26 BE lock, so I read the post, run over, one of the scribes is there so I kill the guy and get it 1st kill :O I'm going back I hear there going for 500g on the AH
I've farmed 5 of them so far, but honestly the price should be much higher, I think if people aren't willing to farm it themselves with the discipline needed to obtain a rare pet it should be made worthwhile to the person who gets it for them.
Several on my server have gone for 5k+ but once people see something that they think it's a quick gold boost they farm the crap out of it and drive the price down to making it almost nothing.
No-one believes you are farming these cats for other players. You are not, you are farming them for gold. If you were farming them for other players, you would not be bleating about the price going down.
got one off one of the guys around the crater in hillsbrad. lucky drop while killing for a quest. sold it on AH for 1200 gold buyout. arygos server.
Was lookin for the Spellscribe, but sadly never found. I moved on to Summoners killed around 60 or so got bored and moved to Guards and Theurgists. I obtained a carrier off the first Theurgist kill and then a second after about 50 kills from a Guard.
Well, I have been farming this all week now... I have killed the rare spawn spellscribe and everything but the cat carrier has dropped... this is beginning to suck... but I'm going to stick it out a bit longer... these are going for 1300 on Horde AH and 1800 on the Alliance side, and I don't feel like paying for one... (Kul Tiras Server)

I've finally found this cat!
I camped out for 2 days.
Best thing to do is log out and log back in every 2 hours if it's not there log back on in another 2 hours, just keep checking for it and if you can track humanoids then put that on and keep checking the map to see if Dalaran spellscribe is there.
If I can find the cat again I can put it on the Smolderthorn AH for not that much money as I'm not desperate for money.
O.K. Go to Ambermill in Silverpine Forest. Look for the three buildings inside the walls. The spellscribe will pop up in either one, and will be a man or woman.
It is a rare spawn that pops up every 4-7hrs, and you really have to watch for her. I had her spawn in the main building, and the only reason I missed her was because I was killing alli at the time and my elemental took her out.
So, make sure you don't have pets, imps, or elementals out at all. It really sucks to spend two hours waiting for her to spawn only to lose out to that.
Also, make a macro "/target Dalaran spellscribe" and just use that. It will save a lot of effort.
Or, if you are like me, take the time to up your unarmed skill. I upped it from 325 to 400 during the time it took to wait. Thought the mobs would be too low, but apparently Blizz has changed it.
Just have a lot of patience and you will get it eventually.

At long last, I finally got this pet. I killed the spellscribe twice and got it the second time. I found the best way to know if he/she has spawned without even moving is to sit in the middle building witht he archmage guy and turn on your combat log. When they spawn it will say spellscribe casts frost armor or something to that affect. And on a side note, if you're ever in a raid, put this pet out and have someone else put out stinker (the skunk). They'll start chasing each other all around the room. It's helarious.
Started leveling a hordie to farm this pet the other day. I already have the 75 pet achiev on my alli hunter but I still want to keep going for all the rarer pets I haven't been lucky enough to get. Saw it going for 1800g on the neutral AH and decided to get it myself.
That said... I find it funny that people don't think other players would pay thousands of gold for a pet they could farm themselves if they really wanted to. The majority of people are a lot lazier than others give them credit for, else they're more tied up in raiding and other stuff to bother spending the time to go farm pets. Those that have oodles of gold don't really care about dropping 1-5k gold on a cool pet that could help them get an achiev.
For myself, I plan to farm the cat for my personal toons first, then my friends, and then farm some for the AH. This is a relatively obscure pet that I think the majority of people don't have, especially alli. I haven't even seen it on my regular faction AH therefore the potential for making a nice chunk of gold off those lazy rich toons is looking good lol.
This guy has a great dorp rate for the cat. Been farming him for the past week and out of about 7 kills, 4 carriers dropped. Too bad they don't go that high on my server, only about 600-700G. Ahh well it's easy cash.

700g sounds like a steal to me.
Depending on your server and faction the price will vary of course. 400g sounds good to me though lol. The black tabby has been going for around 1k on my server which isn't terrible as I've seen other, extremely rare pets go for thousands more (ie. disgusting oozeling, firefly, azure whelp, etc). I've nabbed the Spellscribe about 16 times in the last few weeks and only gotten 3 cats... so rare... still rarer for Alli... but still relatively easy to get with a little persistence.
3nd kill, still no drop..
I have been camping Ambermill for 2 weeks and have killed the spellscribe close to a dozen times and only ever gotten staves swords and belts. I have been logging on every 6 hours around the same time and tonight I logged in half an hour earlier and went afk for a drink and nibbles, came back and waited past my usual time and have just read ninismy5in's comments (3 months ago) and after checking my my combat log it said "Dalaran Wizard casts Mage armor" (or frost armor I forget), but I see nothing about him dying, does this mean he despawned?
i'm using my horde death knight to farm this for my main ally character (after it drops i'll get a friend to help me transfer it through a neutral AH).
i just started farming yesterday and killed the spellscribe 4 times before going to bed. kill times were as follows:
12:15 pm
4:15 pm
10:15 pm
3:00 am
after each kill i log out for 3 hours and then come back. seems to be working out pretty well so far..
except i don't have the cat yet!!
After some experimentation with the spawn times I think I have a better clue than what has been previously mentioned.
If you have done the 'Higher Learning' quest then you may understand spawn times a little more. The particular spawn time of this NPC seems to be in the 5th hour window, meaning if you kill him/her at 1pm then he will spawn 'randomly' between 5 and 6 pm.
This reasoning would explain why someone logging on / off every 3 hours might not see him for 6 hours...it means he/she has been sitting there for up to an hour before they logged on to recheck.
Finding the Spellscribe at a top-hour is likely, however remember not to look for a specific time if you don't know the last time he/she was killed. Timer begins when the Spellscribe is killed, not from when he/she last spawned.
I followed this today and was able to nail the NPC within the 5th hour window every time. Got 1 cat for my troubles. Good Luck!

Yes, I've been farming it since 3.2.2 and I'm finding them same as always. I just keep my DK camped at the spawn point and check on him every now and then. This cat is making me rich! =D
I have found spellscribes at both the main building and the one to the right in Ambermill. Got a cat on my second kill :p Still camping though, as gave the cat to a friend, and want one for myself and at least one to sell . . . they seem to go for about 600-700 gold on my server at the moment.
I got lucky, got this on the first horde toon i ever made, i didnt even know it was rare till i came here.

Got it again, 2 x spawns = 2 x cats.
Thought I'd share some spawn timers:
10.35 server time, belt, no cat.
(possibly missed spawn, i didn't find him/her every hour i checked, could be killed or could not have spawned)
20.15 server time, staff, no pet.
(missed spawns, probably 1 or 2 in the night)
9.30 server time next day (not sure about spawn time, that was when i logged and found her), belt, no cat.
(possible missed spawn, as I was playing my main. the next three were continuous camp and macro spam while filling job applications and reading a book)
15.12 server time (not sure about spawn again, just went there and she was already there) belt, no cat.
18.59 server time (spawned then) belt, no cat.
00.43 server time (spawned then) belt and cat.

Spotted at 7:10pm, killed at 7:15pm <sash, no cat
Spotted at 11:20pm, killed at 11:25pm <sash, no cat
I'd like to mention, I got the sash when looting the cat as well. From my estimate the spawn time seems to have no clear pattern, but an every 4-6 hour interval seems plausible.
