Core drops off the water elementals -- South I got none, even after I had killed about 20-30 water elementals/sea sprays. NONE.
Then, north of the questgiver I got a core to drop nearly every kill.

Go north of the quest giver to around 44,39 you will see the elementals start to appear there, follow the beach, these give the drop 10 times faster than the ones to the south and east. Got mine in 12 kills

maybe blizzard has changed the drop rate since all these posts, but i found that it was just the same as any other quest. you kill acouple- get one.
stop whining, it gets you xp anyways. and it certainly doesn't take days to do. i now have 9/10 and i've been doing it for about 15 minutes now. I recommend doing the 'Zapped Giants' quest while doing this one obviously, bc you'll get both done at once.
Just go up and down the coastline killing one by one and turn back around for respawns if you still need some.

There seems to be WoW players that dread,
To do a drop quest. They'd rather be dead.
Drop rate's one in three,
Should solo; that's the key.
They'd prefer complaining on Thott instead!
There are tons of Sea Sprays and Sea Elementals that have a one in three chance of dropping; which means by law of averages you will need to kill 30 of them to get your quest done. If you are grouped with 2 other people, you will have to kill 90 of them! Simple math. That's why Blizz put so many of them both north and south of the dock where the original quest giver is. So use your first aid, drink your free mana from the drops and start grinding! Vote for my limerick poem plz. :)

Like everyone else says, just a hideous, hideous drop rate. Grab a pot of coffee and a good book cause you'll be here a while. This must be one of the longest, dullest grinds in the game. I had no luck at all on the shoreline, spent over an hour going all the way to the south end of the beach and back without a single drop! Decided to try the little inlet channel that runs east and north from the shore and got all 10 drops there. They came in bunches - the first two kills dropped cores, then another hour (about 25-30 kills) went by before I got any more. 3 of the next four kills dropped cores, then another 45 minutes of no drops, followed by 4 of the next 7 dropping cores. The last one took another half hour. About half the mobs drop nothing, not even cheap junk. I wouldn't mind grinding 3-1/2 hours when they're dropping 3 or 4 silver a pop, but this is just pointless. And as if that's not enough to make you quit the game for a week, then you turn it in and the quest giver asks you to do it again! Blizzard folk have a sick sense of humor sometimes. No thanks Blizz, I'll pass on the refuel quest if you don't mind.
DO NOT SKIP THIS QUEST!!! as a vet player do all the drop quests you can. but get this.. DO THEM WITH RESTED STATUS! at lvl 50 i was geting 500xp a kill. you should always do these kind of quests Bizz put the in here for a reason that force you to grind. if you skip all the drop quests you would lvl at a good pace and you will end up grinding out the rest of your lvl anyways. my advice to you is as follows. Rest up a bit Toss in your fav toons in your media player and have at it the quest will be done and no time you will get alot of grinding xp

15 killed , 10 things droped , very good rate , kill the 1s that are at north of the questgiver.
I killed them both directions from the quest giver and both directions were horrible. Certainly didn't notice the north to be better than the south.
Pull them into water, it sure gives you better drop rate...

Horrific drop rate. This thing sucked for me as a 47 rogue, i really took a beating from these guys and i had to kill like 50 for the 10. BAD quest.

Call me crazy, but I think I found a method to get the cores to drop:
I was killing all the elementals and got three in a row, then nothing for 20 kills.
So I thought, "What if I alternate Sea Sprays and Sea Elementals?"
Sure enough, EVERY single kill by this alternating method resulted in a drop. All 7 in a row.
I think that's statistically impossible to happen by pure chance.

after spending 30 minutes with only finding one every 5, someitmes way worse, tried alternating. got a 100% drop rate when i started doing this. i think we may have the secret?

Another vote here for going north of the questgiver. I killed 8 or 9 elementals south of the questgiver without a drop, and began to worry I was doing something wrong. After checking here, I went north and got a drop every 2-4 kills.
I didn't really pay attention to whether or not it was a sea spray or an elemental, I just sent in my void and went to work. I had a drop with about every other kill.....I dunno...

This quest is a nightmare for a frost mage. Slow killing and low drop rates... but I'm commited now, and I'll be damned if I wont finish this quest!

I have 5 characters, and done this quest 3 times now hoping the drop rate would be better (come on blizz, pull the thumb out ur ass!!) but sad to say it is the same, killed over 100 elemental's for 7 core's this time (u might be lucky and get them quick, but if after 10-15 kills u only have 1 core, drop this quest and move on!! unless u love farming, boring, boring, boring.)
DO NOT GO NEAR THIS QUEST!! it's a waste of time..
OK i have done this quest on 3 toons and ive noticed the same thing like if you go north at the start there gona drop in the south if u go south first there going to drop more in north
i don't know what's up, but i got about 1 drop from about 15 kills. and i'm going after the ones north of the questgiver.
My oh my, i just did this again on my fury warrior and i'd forgotten how bad the drop rate was. I wasn't even sure i'd picked the quest up properly until i checked and rechecked my quest log.
You aren't imagining it and it isn't just you, the drop rates on these quest items are cringeworthy. I ate 40 times doing this quest, eating roughly every 2-3 mob kills. If you value your sanity, skip this quest.
I have to agree that alternating seems to be the way to go. I found two of those cores while killing about 30 elementals as a level 46-47 warrior, then I read about the alternating thing, and doing that I got four cores from five kills so far …
I'd also advise on picking up everyhing the elementals drop, even stuff like elemental water and enchanted water that are not use to many classes. It might just halp :)
Ok I definetly agree its a bad drop rate but I read about alteranting and well it worked nothing more then that. Also pick up everything and anything! I got over 1g in vendor stuff between the elemental water and Enchanted water alone (I used globes of water for tailoring) So its defiently a time consuming quest btu in my opinion more the worth it.
