ok so i have had my turtle for hmmm...ever and i just find no reason to change. The second oyu hit lvl 15 and oyu can tame the first turtle do so becaus eit makes life so much easier in the end. Though it may not be the best in PvP it owns in normal and rocks everything in all instances especially MC. By far with the amount of armor it has you can just send your pet into anymore have it growl like 50 things and have it tank while you pick everything off one by one. I dont know why anyone would die after getting this pet and if you do you should never be allowed to grace the beautality(yes that is a word look it up!) of the most holy and indestrucable turtle.

I think bears are better because they have good armor and good health.

      Wrong.

Turtles have the most armor of anything (tied with crabs) at 108% and average health (100%, better than crabs). Bears have the most health of anything (108%) and average armor (100%).

Turtles & bears are the two "best" tanks due to the above listed stats. Turtles have the most armor, bears have the most health. They are each average in the other stat, so no, bears don't have "good armor".

But it is a trade off. Turtles are better against melee targets due to the top armor rating, bears against magic due to the top health rating. You will be normally encountering a much higher percentage overall of melee targets than magic over the 1-60 level run.

For top end instances, depending on which ones you frequent, either the turtle or bear will make a slightly better tank than the other. Turtle's revised Shell Shield may tip the balance, though; it can give you or the party extra time to slap on a heal or two.

Hard to go wrong with either one; choose which suits your play style and fashion sense.

      Wrong.

A common misperception. No tamed beast retains the same stats that they may have had pre-tamed. With the single old exception of Lupos--a wolf, who was confirmed to do Shadow damage in addition to regular wolf damage...before Blizzard fixed that bug.

The only thing Beastlore is good for is to find out what abilities a beast has/you can learn (and the food it can eat). A monster with "2 million" AC is not going to retain that once tamed. Sorry. A level 26 Elite turtle is going to have _identical_ stats as any other level 26 turtle.

Erroneously stating that "i've noticed it happen a lot in PVP situations, duels, BG's, and also quite a bit with instances." is misinforming people. Check out http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/, http://tkasomething.com/ & http://www.goodintentionsguild.info/hunters.html to get accurate info about pets.

An elite turtle is a good way to go. turtles  are great damage takers. Do not expect the damage to be given by these guys. They are strictly tanks. I am all marksmanship in my talents so i give alot of damage with my shots. A trutle and a marksman are a pretty good team, beacause when you give the damge the turtle takes everything else. A turtles 'Shell Sheild" can be a saving grace. make sure all mobs are on your turtle and turn on shell sheild witch decrease damage taken by 50 %. I personally have been favoring turtles and honostly they are better than bears iin my opinion (armor wise). I have had Kresh form wc since lvl 24 and i am lvl 47 now and stil have him.

I'm a 60 hunter on skullcrusher, currently rolling with what I consider the 3 most useful pets in the game:
lv60 Elite Turtle (Snappy): from south Tanaris
lv60 Broken Tooth (Ripclaw): 37 Rarespawn out of the badlands, only pet to match the 1.0 attack speed of a ZG bat, but attainable at lvl 37 and has prowl :D
lv60 LBRS Worg (Doommaw): 56 Wolf out of UBRS

The turtle has been both mine, and my groups saving grace so many times. The first time I attempted the robot chicken escort quest out in Tanaris, I had to fight 3 scorpids at once with my cat...tried 3 times, couldn't do it without losing the chicken. Afterwhich I found out I could tame an elite turtle close by, so I got the turtle named him snappy (to go with speedy, from the Orphan quest :D) and I tried the escort again. It was effortless after that, not only was the damage reduced a further 15%, but that 50% damage reduction for 12 seconds allowed me to let him fight two while I pulled and killed a separate one. Normally I'd have to FD at 20% health on that fight, losing my pet and the chicken. I ended with 75% and my turtle ended with 25%, the chicken being at damn near full health and now waddling away.
Edit: BTW shell shield blocks spell damage too, so even though a bear has more health to take the spell damage, shell shield blocks 1/2 of it for 12 seconds, which can be a HELL of a lot if the monster chain casts spells for a bit. oh and, people LOVE turtles, Whenever I take the turtle out, people make comments about the uniqueness and awesomeness of the turtle. Both fame and fortune come from him!

The turtle I find is awesome for solo grinding when you fight more than one mob at once, its also a wonderful off-tank in instances where the tanks are having difficulty managing all the monsters in a pull at once (sheep break in UBRS for example) I've had the turtle tank a mob that hits for 600 a shot for about 22 seconds, allowing us to finish off 1-2 of the most troubling mobs and then switch back to the one the turtle tanked. The turtle dies, but keeps the mob from storming straight for the healer.

Brokentooth (ripclaw) on the otherhand, has low armor, but a good chase speed and an amazing attack speed, she is the ultimate in pvp interrupters, it is funny to see a druid struggling to heal themselves while this pet hammers away at them, I've seen a 3 second cast take as long as 6-7 seconds with this pet just because it is so annoying. The damage isn't spectaclar, nor does the cat hit hard, but for healers and casters alike, they dread this pet above any other hunter pet (warlock pets are meaner :D).

My LBRS worg (Doommaw) I primarily use for raids and AV's as pets are a quick death in AV's, so I keep him by me and use his Furious Howl to give my next multishot a much needed boost. It's very nice to see a 100 damage addition to a multishot crit just from a pet buff. Other than that, the worg isn't spectacular at anything, medium attack speed, medium armor, medium damage, just an awesome pet buff. The only problem with this pet is, while fighting furious howl does grab agro, and can either pull another mob to him that wasn't necessary, or while riding it can pull the mob from you to him which is sometimes an advantage.

All in all, unless I get more stable slots, I don't think I'll ever be dropping any one of these pets as I have found an individual use for all of them.

Don't sell off a pet just because it lacks the raw stats you want. Each pet has a unique and powerful purpose. Oh and to the hunter that uses his turtle as a fort against people that click on him... genius :D until they move up and start using tab lol. but until then, enjoy ur 41 yards of near invincibility.

From my personal experience, I tried alot of different pets and each has is little advantage.

For the best Tank, Yes Turtles are awesome.  Alot of hunters say that they have lower HP than bears and other good tank, But who really cares when they can have 90% Damage reduction from armor.

The Boar is also another Solid choice for Tanking.  He is fast with is great Charge ability, can learn Dash, and eats everything which is a small but usefull Bonus.

My 3rd Choice might be weird, but when you think about it, the Carrion bird has done a great job for me. Why? His stats are all average (only +5% armor), But is Ability to hold aggro is awesome.  Screech is like an AoE Taunt and It reduce the attack Power of every ennemies around, so it's like an indirect Damage reduction Stat that make it up for the lack of +Health and only +5% armor.

Bears are very tough Tank no doubt about it, but I'll rather get a Boar. Crabs are like turtle, but do a little bit more dmg and without the ability to Shell Shield.

The advantage of the Crocs is that they don't have  Dmg penalty, but IMHO, the Carrion Birds does the same Dmg, and Screech make it a Better tank (Great AoE aggro + reduce Attack power of ALL ennemies).

Scorpids are really better than Crocs, they have more HP and their poison make it for the -6%DPS.

i have raise kresh and an oasis turtle about 10 lvs together and they both had the exact same stats the whole way through i belive that each type of pet has only one stat line no matter if it starts as an elite or not.

Yes, the only differences between pets of the same level in the same pet family is skin color & pet skills they may have. Being Elite makes no difference to base pet stats (attack speed, hit points, attack power, damage, run speed or anything else). The single exception to this is "caster pets". Pets that have a mana bar before you tame them will, unfortunately, have lower base stats than the same pet without the mana-bar-before-taming.

As to pet skills, there is virtually nothing available on an Elite that cannot be found on non-Elite mobs. Semi-exceptions to this include:
--Poison Spit. Ranks 1 & 2 are only off Elite Serpents. But Rank 3 can be found on a level 68 non-Elite Serpent.
--Lightning Breath. Rank 1 is only off Deviate Coiler Hatchlings, which are Elites (level 11...heh).

For all you alliance players wondering where to get a turtle, there are snapjaws in Hillsbrad all along the river.  They start off neutral so you can run right up to them and place your freezing trap nearby, just kite them over it for more time without getting hit by them.  They are lvl 30: I don't know if you can get some earlier or not, besides Gamoo-Ra in Wailing Caverns.

Shell shield for me tips the balance in their favour as being a better tank than the other pets for me: half damage against them for 12 seconds, which you can activate at will if you are worried about them that much.

For comedy purposes you can teach them Prowl.  Nobody expects a turtle to appear from stealth!

Turtles are the even better tanks than bears. Why? Because Cobra Reflexes cancels out the attack speed minus on Shell Shield. So your pet is taking half damage and dealing the same amount of agro. Since the turtle's a tank, nobody cares about the DPS. Intimidation is amazing for just that additional bit of agro but a Marksmanship specced Hunter is awesome as well. Before Lvl 30 you will not have Cobra Reflexes so the Bear is the viable alternative. However, the day you hit Lvl 30 is the day your bear becomes obsolete. Good Luck to all my fellow Hunters taming this pet and happy hunting!
