its a very old technique, I use it since I have freeze trap. here's the correct procedure for taming:
      1. cast aspect of the monkey
      2. set freez trap
      3. shoot the tameable animal with concussion shot
      4. start taming
      5. if unsuccessful, either feign if you have low hitpoints (and then start again from point 1.), or tame again (if enough hitpoints left). you can still feign while taming if low on hps, but its risky, cause what if resisted?

        **********

THERE IS A BETTER WAY.. and works wonders on high-level pets and elites that can fear or stun you out of taming.

        1. cast aspect of the monkey
        2. set a freeze trap
        3. take a few steps back, out of the trap's area of effect.
        4. your Freezing Trap spell has a 30sec cool-down. wait for it to cool-down just a few seconds before it can be cast again
        5. shoot the tameable animal (concussive is not necessary). This will obviously pull the beast into your existing freezing trap.
        6. as soon as the beast is frozen, drop a second freeze trap. Away from the AoE of the first trap else the second trap will spring immediately.
        7. with the beast now frozen in the first trap, and a second trap now between you and the beast, start taming.

When the first trap releases, the beast will almost instantly be caught in the second trap and you've just gained the seconds needed to completely train the beast without it ever hitting you or allowing it to cast fear or stun you.

Done properly it will rarely fail, but fail it can.  As we all know ANY cast has the potential of being resisted by the target.  Tame is no exception.  If it does, run away, feign death and try again.

        Happy Hunting!

For all you "where can I get" people... use Beast Lore on various animals to find out what you can learn from them.  Cast this then mouse over the portrait of the animal then look to the lower right side of your screen to read it's abilities.  Also, it isn't a case where the species is limited to whatever that particular animal has.  Another animal in that species might have what you're looking for.  Beast Lore is something you get from a hunter trainer at lvl 24.

All pets have the same run speed which is 115% of your normal running speed. So you outrun all pets if you use aspect of the cheetah, however, with the talent Bestial Swiftness (under beastmastery) your pet runs at 149.5% (1.3*115=149.5) of your normal running speed.

There's no real reason why you should change your pet all the time. You will only have to. If you choose The Rake at a low level, you can keep him to level 60 because he's a good pet. So choose a pet that is good (for example The Rake or Humar) or that you think looks cool and stick with it. Nevertheless, you do need to tame new pets every now and then to learn new skills. Here's a list over which pets comes with which skills and some tips for taming.

Ok, at the top of this page you will see the types of skills that cats are allowed to learn.

Cats can learn Bite, Claw, Prowl, and Dash

Some cats come with certain of these abilities already avaliable once you tame them. BUT: they will not progress past that level using training points. In other words: if you have a pet cat that knows Bite 1, you will not be able to progress it past Bite 1 by yourself.

Instead, you need to stable your cat, and use the Beast Knowledge skill to look for another cat with a higher level of that skill (i.e. Bite 2, or Bite 3, etc). Once you find said cat, tame it. Then You have to immediately start to use it in combat. Use it for a while, and you should get a message along the lines of "Learned Bite 3". Dismiss this cat, and retrieve your stabled animal. Bring up the Train Pet menu, and Bite 3 will be avaliable to train.

As for cross training, no, your pets are restricted to what their spiecies is allowed to learn. So a bear cannot learn ferocious howl, and a wolf cannot learn Dive, and an Owl cannot learn Prowl.

Carrion Bird: Fair damage and defensive (Nice...)
      Cat: Fast and somewhat powerfull

Gorrilla: All round- but with extra Damage.. (really nice)-suggested..
      Hyena: Fast and somewhat powerfull
      Owl: defensive and fast
Raptor: slightly armoured slightly fast and Average Damage.
Scorpid: TANK (best for tanking) - somewhat fast
Spider: (warlock style) Poisonous and slightly armoured.
Tailstrider: defensive. (Bad stats..) not reccomended. Unless its an elite/rare.
      Turtle: TANK and powerfull (slow)
Windserpent: slightly armoured, and rest average.
Wolf: fast and defensive. (beleive it or not)

This really depends on what you r style is or what you like... I use them for tactical purposes.. ex. Instances I bring my Turtle. (tank)
And for solo i use cat or gorilla for damage purposes.

Happy hunting.  (some diets are not really flexible for some players.)

All pets are a good choice. (except for tailstrider.) lol

OK...just a guide on how to do it at a low level.
The main problem is just getting there. Easiest I think (and I did this at 14) is to get a trash pet and run, using Beast tracking, from Loch Modan to Menethil in the Wetlands. Give the crocodiles a wide berth! There register with the wing rider and then go to the left jetty and get the boat to Theramore...you can also get a boat from Menethil to Auberdine and Darkshore...good pets there too. At Theramore register with the wing rider and also make the Inn your home. Now run back to the shore and go left between the castle and the water as far as you can. Take off all your kit (except your shirt of course!) as (a) it wont protect you against anything in the water, and (b) you don't want it to take hits anyway. Now using Beast tracking and Humanoid tracking swim south along the coast and between the islands. Remember the yellow titled animals like the tortoises are safe...but the sharks and murlocs will kill you in a couple of hits so give them a wide berth. I run along the beach at first cos the tortoises are fine...and the coral sharks in the water are dead fast...but I keep animal tracking on as there are murlocs ahead. Swim between the islands...avoid the bay halfway down that has a wrecked ship in it...its full of murlocs. If you die you rez at Theramore...just run back to your body...rez and swim on. Eventually you'll come to THe Barrens and Horde Territory in big red letters. Keep going and swim on as close to the deep blue water as you can without getting fatigue. You'll swim past Northwatch Castle (the soldiers there are Ally friendly...but theres usually Horde players attacking them)...keep swimming on and you'll come to what is like a shallow bar between the land and an island where briefly you run rather than swim...it means your getting near Ratchet. To your left the land will recede back into a bay. Swim into the bay looking out for the Makuras..they will likely get your pet as you swim into Ratchet coming to the land to the left of the pier. Ratchet is neutral of course but watch out for Horde...ideally you want to sneak in when theres no one about. If you've succeeded then find a house, keeping to the left side of the road leading up the hill out of Ratchet. You want a house with an upstairs. Theres 2 I think...one by the graveyard where you rez in Ratchet and one closer to the shore. Go upstairs and provided no one has seen you you'll be pretty safe. Get dressed, rez pet and feed up if necessary. Now your in the Barrens. Keep humanoid tracking on...watch out for Horde at all times cos you are way vulnerable here...but you need your armour on cos you can fight off most of the animals at least now. Right when theres no Horde about, jump out of the window and run across the road towards the hills to your lefy as you cross the road past the goblin bruiser. Come up the hills and turn left skirting around past the raptors, hyena and lions. You'll see a tree after a little way with lions and cubs around it. This is the tree where Humar the Pridelord spawns (level 23...dead good pet). Go past this still keeping to the edge of the plateau. Now you need to run across the plateau or plain to the mountain with the ridges coming down. You'll see a ridge with a thorn root going across it (about halfway up) theres usually hyenas between you and this ridge about level 16. Run across up the ridge, jumping over the rooty thing, up to the top. You can see the X roads here to your north. You need to skirt round this so go east and look down to the bottom of the mountain...you want to run back down a ridge that has no roots going across it that lies between a ridge either side that do have roots. You'll see what I mean when you get there. Come down and avoid the Razormaine patrols. You will see a road in the distance and beyond some hills. You need to get across this road without being seen by any Horde players. Across the road you'll see a tree and to the north of it a house. Skirt round the tree and house to the hill and you'll see in front of you some bones sticking out of the ground. This is where Horde players call Echeyakee, a white lion...also a cool pet if you can get it! Go north west round this hill past some trees...till the road north out of the X roads comes into view. Again watch out for Horde players..look towards the road and you'll see to the west that theres a two trees one each side of the road...the thin tree is your side of it and the fat tree the far side. Now if you run towards them you will see framed in them a tree further away. This finally is the tree where Dishu spawns. The tree lies encircled by a hill and is ringed by lions. Dishu spawns amongst them. I usually climb a little way up a ridge and then if shes not there..log off and on till she appears. When she does...kill off the other lions around her first, abandon your trash pet, take any defense potions etc you have and tame her. She will spawn cubs half way through. I've always managed to tame her before they kill me and she then turns on them...but you can try the running way when they appear and going back hoping they dissappear trick. Then feed her up and HS out with a very cool pet. She hasnt the fastest DPS its 1.5 but she looks so good and her chase speed is better than the Durotar tigers who have a DPS of 1.3. Incidently if you want one of those...keep swimming round the coast past Ratchet and you'll come to the ECho Islands (to your right). Durotar tigers are on the Echo islands...easy to tame at level 7 and 8.
      Good luck all!

not all cats have fast attack speed. however some people get these slow attacking cats for the first attack coming out of prowl. but to answer your question pretty much yes, if you get a fast cat they totally rapeface mages, especially broken tooth, with his 1.00 attack speed. Also if you go BM and get frenzy then his attack speed goes to .77 after a crit. the problem with some hunter vs mage/warlock battles is that they sometimes polly/fear/root the pet. Which is why i love goin BM cuz you hit up bestial wrath and nothin can stop it none of those techniques stop it, also it gets a damage buff which means the squishy cannot get your pet off of him while the pet is attacking insanely fast insanly hard and insanely big

Just because a pet doesn't come with an ability doesn't mean they can't learn it. New (or higher level) abilities are learned from different beasts. You simply find a beast with a better ability, tame it, fight with it till you get a text message telling you you've learned that ability! If you don't want to keep that new pet simply abandon it. Just make sure you put your favorite pet in the stabe first. One way to learn what a pet has is through "Beast Lore" which all Hunters learn from a Hunter trainer. I personally use a very helpful mod called "Fizzwidget Hunter's Helper". You can download from this link, http://ui.worldofwar.net/ui.php?id=1116. With this program I simply place my cursor on a beast and it automatically tells me what that beastie tames with (or not). If an ability appears in green it means I've not learned it yet, if it's in gray I have. Or, I type in for example, "/huntershelper find Bite 6" & it tells me the nearest 4 beasts with that ability & their location!

In addition, in order to discover what abilities you pet can or can't learn go to http://www.goodintentionsguild.info/hunters.html. Or to learn more about pets and such check out http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/. I hope this all helps!
