What my raptor lacks in armor and hp's, he more than makes up for in damage. These beasts tear apart enemies.
I'm a level 30 dwarven hunter. I picked "Felix" up in the Wetlands at level 23. It did take me 2 or 3 levels before he taunted and did enough damage to keep the mobs off of me. But now, at 30, I am rarely, if ever, pulling mobs from him.
And as far as his lack of armor (which isn't really that bad) and fewer hp's, I can more than compensate in heavy fighting with Mend Pet rank 3. More often than not, that heals him faster than the damage he's taking - even in some 2 on 1 fights.
Now, my only complaint, and it's not much of one, is that all they eat is meat. It's a pain in the butt, having worked my fishing skill up to where it is for my previous Bear, and not being able to use it for "Felix". But meat vendors can be found and I keep an adequate supply with me at all times.
Overall I highly recommend Raptors if you want a pet that can deal out heavy damage. Besides, they just look cool and you can color coordinate them to match your character - they come in a plethera of colors. :)
are there any special raptors that are better than others? ex. the rake & humar for cats...
Theres some cool ones for Gladiators Pursuit geared peeps between Thunderlord Strong Hold (Horde town) and Gronn'boy Shrine in Blade's edge Mountains. Nice black ones :D

ok the lowest lvl raptor ive seen is lvl 12 an its out by ratchet in the barrens but look around a little first u might see a lower lvl im not sure.. but 12 is the lowest ive seen good luck
yo, theres even lower lvl ones, lvl 8 i believe, on the road from razor hill, first place with a mailbox or south of orgrimmar. you go from razor hill, then you go west, following the road. just do tracking beasts. you should find like a purple raptor roaming around. nothing rare. there are also some, i believe, to be around that mountainous area near where you get fizzles claw, not in the trenches, but near on top of it. apart from that tho, i dont know where a lower lvl then 10 raptor could be found.
also, if your looking for barrens, which i highly recomend you go to lvl, its on that same road west of razor hill. just keep following the road, you should get to a lil outpost across a bridge over a river. keep following the road (grab the quest at that lil outpost btw) and when you get to a fork in the road, go south. it will lead you straight to the main town in barrens, crossroads. there is where you will get all your major quests, untill almost lvl 18-20
you can get directions to ratchet, another town, from there. anyone could tell you. well, gl
The quickest and best way to train your pet is to use your beast lore to find a beast that has the highest possible rank for any given ability (Rank 8 bite, claw, etc.) and attempt to tame that pet (assuming that you are at least the same lvl as that beast - if you try to tame a beast that's higher lvl than you it won't work).

Why can`t raptors have more abillities. Why can`t they have damage per second spells. They have this huge claw on their feet that that could use to gut your enemies. Or maybe a screech spell that would lower your enemy`s damage and stun then for a few seconds.
PUT THEM MORE ABILLITIES PLZ !!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont say that here... Talk to Blizz.

I got a red raptor right at lvl 10 just after finishing my pet training quest, because he was the most appealing creature to me in the Troll starting area, and I figured he'd be my 'training' pet to learn with and I could trade him for something else a bit later. I kept him for several levels and was pretty happy with him, and stabled him to catch some other pets to learn new abilities since all he knew was Growl. I caught a lot of pets, and even just caught some to try them out not for the ability, and in the end I still liked my raptor best.
It is sad they don't have a special family ability like cats or wolves, but he still holds aggro quite well for me and does good damage, and looks wicked cool. I think Raptors have some of the nicest colorations of pets in the game. They don't have as many animations as some pets, but I still like how they look in combat. Some other pets (like the Crocs and Boars) make rather annoying noises frequently. I trained him in both Bite and Claw although keeping both on will drain him way too fast and then he can't Growl, I keep Bite on and when I see he has energy to spare I manually throw in a Claw when I want some extra damage. I find sometimes Claw and Growl alone seem to go through energy too fast too, although Claw does a bit better DPS. Its nice to have the flexability depending on the mob difficulty you're fighting. He's a little squishy at times but doesn't die very often, and I've started fighting more +3 mobs. I was considering getting Takk shortly just because of the nice coloration, since there doesn't seem to be any difference between rare and regular pets now, since that nice grey-black is much rarer than the red. I also think raptor pets are much more rare now, since they have a bad rap after normalization, I don't see that many other hunters with one. Meat is pretty easy to come by on the Horde side with all the Boars, Wolves, and Striders that drop it, so the limited diet isn't that big of a deal. (It seems like its harder to find early meat drops on the Alliance side, particularly nelfs.)

I've had the same pet ever since I was able to tame pets at level 10. Yes, I've tamed others just to get higher ranks of Bite and Claw but I would just abandon them right after. My little red raptor, Kong, is ridiculously strong and can hold aggro with the best of them(unless I go all-out and hit Berserk, Rapid Fire, Beastial Wrath/The Beast Within, and my trinkets).
We're both level 70. He has 5600 health, 12k armor, does around 140dps with a 2.00 second attack speed, and isn't even maxed out yet. I still need to get him the highest ranks of Claw and Bite.
He's a Bloodtalon Scythemaw I think.... one of those little red raptors outside of Razor Hill and Orgrimmar. It's funny to watch him take down a huge Tyrant Devilsaur in Un'goro Crater when he's only as tall as the Devilsaur's foot.
If you're willing to stick with a pet through about 62 levels of killing, you'll love this little guy. You can also try the Corrupted Scythemaws that are in the same area as the regular Scythemaws if you want a different color.

trap combo ?
u put down trap..

Have you actually tried a raptor before? Sure they have less health and less armour but they make up for this by having massive amounts of damage and with BM this is even greater so you will drop mobs faster than they can kill you. They are similar in all stats and abilities to cats so I don't understand the large ill feeling towards raptors....not that i'm complaining as I like having a slightly unique pet.
To anyone who is thinking of trying a raptor (or cat) and looking to take on 3 mobs at once here is what I do: send your pet in...let him get aggro (don't attack yourself until he gets aggro), send in sting and arcane shot to the mob the pet is attacking and continue to range attack, mend pet, then just as first mob is about to die use multi-shot and you will take aggro from the other two, letting your mend pet heal your pet up, command pet to attack 2nd mob, you attack with raptor strike and lay down immolate trap, the pet will take aggro again then when he is dead the 3rd mob will get aggro to pet then withdraw to range and kill as a single target. Ok so this won't work with mobs a few higher levels than you are but in those cases you need to be more carfeul.
yes they are good pets and they do great damage so that helps for them to keep agro, one problem for me was finding meat for them but its easier in lower levels
yes they do grow but every 5 or 10 lvls
dont know bout the ones in outlands (am only lvl 40) but i think mine has a good amount of health and he hits HARD like 105 every other hit and that was at 35....
patch 2.2.0 = raptors can learn dash
Yeah the stats are the same as your old raptor (minus training), just a color change. That's to balance it out, otherwise everyone would get "elite" pets
raptors can now learn dash.
they need to add Prowl to the raptors .. the raptors in Wailing caverns are stealthed and in the history books raptors where able to stalk there prey in the jungles.. so how come they dont have Prowl...

Imagine yourself in the cretaceous period, you'd get your first look at this 6-foot turkey as you enter a clearing, he moves like a bird. lightly bobbing his head, you keep still because maybe his visual acuity is based on movement like a T. Rex and he'll lose you if you don't move. but no, not the Raptor, you stare at him and he stares right back, and thats when the attack comes, not from the front, but from the side, from the over two Raptors you didn't even know were there. because Raptor's are a pack hunter, he uses co-ordinated attack patterns and he is out in force today and he slashes at you with this, a 6-inch retractable claw like a razor, on the middle toe. he doesn't bother to bite your jugular like a lion, no, he slashes at you across the belly, spilling your intestines. the point is, you are alive when they start to eat you. so, you know, try to show a little respect.
u just qouted jurassic park....
thank you captain obvious, you've saved are lives again!
Raptors may have not so much armor in comparison to other pets but with the same DPS of a cat and higher armor I was amazed at my Goreclaw. In Bestial Wrath this thing is nasty slicing and biting and he chases down mounts in PvP! With the movement increase talent and dash 3 they can outrun an epic mount. Not to mention when they catch the epic mount its rider is going to hurt reslly bad and the lowest level raptors in the game are in fact the level 6 Bloodtalon Tailashers of Duratar. Sorry Allie hunters but yes Duratar. These guys are lean mean killing machines with decent armor, extremely high dps, an easy diet, and the ability to chase down mounts in pvp.
ok as far as raptors not being tanks, i have a scorpid but my wife has a raptor she got in wetlands, she named her malice, now her raptor can take damage on par with my scorpid and as we know scorpids do awesome dps and tanking, so i think if you watch the pets not the stats you might see that all this talk of bad armor is crazy, hits as hard as a cat with better armor....raptors ftw.................(well next to scorpids :)
They need to make Devilsaurs tamable, that'd be freakin awesome! Give it the ability Roar which fears all enemies with in a 20yd radius for 3sec.....that'd be the coolest pet imo
They actually are with the release of WoTLK, if your are high enough in Beast Mastery, you'll be able to tame pets like Core Hounds and Devilsaurs
Confirmed took about 15 mins killed all others in area then went a little to the east bingo there he spawned...Also im a lv 26 ex twink so i was able to kill everything fast about 3 hits per kill those post were correct ...i like this guy
raptors are so dps kings, and they are a new twist to the retarded ass cats we all tame. they are cooler, tougher and better
I first got my raptor "Bloodtalon" at lvl 12 and he was a POWER-HOUSE, but it is a pain to get food for him so i just hunted boars until i filled up a 16 pocket bag full of meat. Also for hunter i suggest to get the gun to me it look like it does more damage and get the energineing and mineing profession so you can make you own bullets and dont have to spend money on arrows.
