Owls eat only meat, so no harder to feed than a wolf, raptor or spider.
For night elves in the starter areas, meat can be a little harder to find than in other areas as there are fewer meat drops, and the only vendor that sells meat is a roaming vendor in Darnassus that can be hard to locate.
One easy solution is to do the cooking quest in Dolanaar, which gives you a recipe to make spider kabobs off the easy to find drop of Small Spider Legs.

I happen to like my owl. As a Nightelf Hunter, I've found that it pulls agro pretty well, and it's a good pet to have when you want to pull from an area thats sorta rough to get out of. I was on a hilltop pulling murlocs in redridge, and I knew that by going down to the bottom, I would agro all the murlocs and die, but sending peepers down, I could kill them at my liesure, and if he started getting too many on him, calling him back, they couldnt really chase him as quickly, having to go all the way around the hill, at which point, many give up, and the remaining few are easily killed.

for hordies, first of all you are going to die ALOT along the way.strip down, yes, strip down all your gear to save on repairs, you are going to die anyway. get to the boat at darkshore, dont go into the town but instead swim to the docks(under the docks)die UNDER the boat by aggroing the sea monsters under the docks, as a ghost you can now go on top of the docks and rez INSIDE the boat(spirit healer below)wait a few minits, go topside when the coast is clear, jump the ship a little before you reach darnassus, there's a spot next to dock you can get a good start for the portal, and run for the pink portal, you are going to die prob 4 times and end up in the Graveyard in darkshore, get on boat as a ghost, get back to your body and rez a little closer each time,as soon as your alive again run for the portal, keep moving closer and closer to pink portal until you can rez right at the portal. this is the monotonous part, die, ride boat back as a ghost, rez, run, repeat. (Dont try to run across the ocean, you have to take the boat back, trust me, I tried.)once you get thru, you will die again from the guards but you will end up in graveyard in darnassus/teldrassil, avoid the guards when you rez on the inside, run down the hill and you should see the owls, levs 5 up to 11 believe, grab your owl and hearth out.its a big pain but it is possible, just have to die about 20 times to get a low level pet with no skills, but hey, just to say you did it I guess, did it at level 16 on a day I was extremely bored and playing my alts, the hardest part is just getting to the docks thru stonetalon,etc. turn on beast tracking, and be prepared for low level ally activity once you get to darkshore if you are on a pvp server.leave your gear in bank so no penalties for repairs when you rez unless you can afford it, bring a throwaway pet if you like but it will die in 2 hits, but if you can pull it off with a pet as a decoy go for it, good luck, it just takes awhile and its a cool pet to get if youre bored enough to spend about an hour and half of running and dying - got the instructions from petopia.com and all credit goest to them, thanks!:P
As most of you know, the horde side doesn't have owls. Since I'm a hunter and really like the stats the owl has I figured I'd take matters into my own hands and go and get me one! well... you will DIE A LOT trying to get over to where the night elves start. The person prior to me explained it real good.
I wish I would of had these directions prior to going to the alliance side. I don't think I would have died as much!

1) Strip down (unless you're rich enough to pay the repair bill), run north out of the Barrens into Ashenvale and let yourself be killed.*
2) As a ghost, run through Ashenvale and Darkshore to the Auberdine dock, ride the boat to Teldrassil (Rut'theran Village), run through the portal into Darnassus, and keep running all the way to the Dolanaar (not Darnassus) graveyard.
3) At this point I logged out to the character screen and logged back in,** then took the Spirit Healer there in Dolanaar, and went to get my owl.***
4) Hearth home and enjoy the compliments on your unusual "for the Horde!" low-level pet!
*Ghosts run faster than live characters, so get killed as early as possible to cut down on your transit time.
**I've read comments on some forums that you may not need to log out and log back in if you died more than one zone away, but I did not verify that. It only adds a few seconds to the process anyway.
***The Strigid Hunter is the highest level owl available (8 to 9) and also already knows Claw 2 when tamed.
It was of course lucky that there were virtually no Allied players around to dodge (this was around six to seven in the evening, must just have been a slow night). If it had been "too busy" the plan was to just log out at the graveyard until early morning hours.
this is pretty much the same as the guy above me, but instead of rezing all the time, stay a ghost after u kill urself under the boat to teldrassil in auberdine. then ride the boat to the teldrassil port, get off at the dock, go to the pink portal, go outside of darnassus and run all the way to dolanaar. all as a ghost. rez urself at the graveyard in dolanaar since there arent any sentinels around and go get ur owl. and, as above, hearth the heck outta dodge!

You tame another beast with the skill you want and fight a few mobs with it until the Screech (Rank 1) skill is listed in your pet training list.

[i don't really care if others have sumitted. This is how i did it and i only died twice or three times.]
These are the 12 easiest steps to getting an owl. Took me a totel of 25 minutes. You'll need the fallowing.
- HearthStone
- Frost or Ice Trap
- Pet to help you, bears are the best.
- Lots of good healing potions and some mana ones.
1:You need to run to their docking bay. [sorry i forget the name, its the one at darkshore i think]
2: Swim in the water right too where the boat will dock. Now, unfortunatly. You need to die. Just up and down in the water to be killed by a gaurd or swim around alittle and find a monster to kill you. if its a monster make sure to swim back to the surface before it kills you, then die.
3: Run from the cemitary down to the docking bay. Past the nelfs. To where your body is. Make sure you can rez if you get on the boat.
4:Wait for the boat to come then get on and go into the lower part of it. Rez there, the gaurds won't see you and your safe.
5: Stay there and watch your little mappy.
6: This is the hard part. when the boat is nearing the docks, you ened to jump off the boat and swim carefully to the clearing part where their is no gaurds. Have on your tracker so you know where they are.
7: Now you need to get as close to the portal as possible. When you think your clsoe enough that one more step and they'll attack. Stop. Send your pet out on a murderous rampage [0-0]. the gaurds will attack it. And trust me it won't last long. Put on cheeta and run like the wind, jump into the portale if you have too. just don't die on the side you came from, or you'll have to do this all again. Once you get to the other side, your gonna be dead before you even see whats happened. Their are gaurds on the other side waiting to drill holes into your body.
8: Now that you are dead and you see the pretty lady with wings you'll want to go up to her, make sure no one is around and rez. After rezing run into the bushes behind her and wait or your flag to go off. or else you might end up dead again.
9: Now that your un-flagged. Their are two places easy to get too, that have owls. One is south, at the very bottom rim of the place and two is probably direcly north of you. North is where stridge [oo spl] are. They are faster but harder to tame.
10: Either one you pick, look out for buildings that will hurt you with their evil nelf gaurds. Run aroudn for awhile till you find a bird. Make sure no cats are around cause they tend too attack you.
11: after removing all the cats you now have not argo'ed your bird and are ready to tame. Rez your old pet, abandone it, making sure it doesn't attack you upon doing so. Now put down a freeze trap or frost trap and get as far away as you can, then, use taming rod. it will take awhile so use your potions now. My lv25 had too try about 5 times to get it.
12: Now that yyou have your prized owl, i sugest your Hearth out or exsplore without being killed [tis what i did]

I am horde and I got my owl from Darnassus yesterday. I pretty much followed the same steps others has written about. I would simply like to add that the easiest way to get aboard the boat to Darnassus is indeed to die below it and ress aboard. You do NOT need to alert any one to get killed however. You are swimming - just stay under water until you drown! Easy as that.

There's no lvl 33 owl. You have two choices:
You can learn screech and dive off buzzards and bats first, and then go get a low level owl now from the NE starting area and level it up.
You can wait until you're level 48 and get an Ironbeak Owl that already knows dive 2 and screech 3.
I've used owls mainly my whole hunter pet career. I'm specced BM, owls tend to hold aggro fairly well and they make great PvP pets because of Dive. If you are BM specced you can get intimidation and Dive, and stop any flagrunner dead in his tracks. Or anyone for that matter.
I got my first owl (as a troll) at level 11, I deathran through Darnassus to get it and I kept it all the way to level 52. When I hit 52 I went and got another owl- Olm the Wise is in Felwood, and the only white owl (rare) that you can get at 52, and the only owl in the game that has a faction. He comes with Dive 3 I believe.
Once I hit 59 I had been using an EPL bear and decided to go back to owls- once you get a taste of dive you just can't settle for another pet, especially if you're a PvP fiend. So I went out to winterspring and found a lv. 59 winterspring screecher- He has Claw 8, Dive 3 and Screech 4 automatically on him, and high attack power, with dive he's high attack speed as well. very good offensive and aggro holding pet.
Once I hit 60 I'm going to nab me a lv. 60 black owl from outlands, they look interesting but I think they have less skill- I'll have to do more research.
How are you all getting screech to work? I put my owl in a stable and got another pet and learned screech, and took my owl out of stable and got it as my pet again. still no screech, what am I doing wrong?
indeed there is, after you have learned screech or any other pet skill you must go to your pet traning skill from your spell book and buy the skill via that method.

ok so I made a twink hunter and I went and got an owl from the NE starting area (I'm horde) but after it hit lvl 8 it didnt learn screech. how the hell am I supposed to find someone that has screech so I can teach it to him? do I have to get another pet that has it? or do I have to fight a pet that has it enough times for him to learn it? thanks for help
I hate it because my owl won't learn any of the attacks or learn anything that the website says.I will only learn growl and the resistences. I want to know if my pet has to reach a certain lvl so that I can start teaching it stuff.

I currently have "olm the owl". He is by far the BEST pet ever. I started off in Felwood by taming a Ironbeak owl lvl 48 (first owl you can get on the Horde side). This owl came with Dive 2 screech 3. So i got the great idea of finding Olm. So what i did was take the original owl i tamed with me abandon him when i find olm. Found olm got rid of the pet and tryed to tame him...i was not high enough lvl..duh..he's lvl 52. So i grabbed another owl (Ironbeak Hunter lvl 50 comes with Claw 7, Dive 3). Lvl'ed up to 52 and went back to Felwood to get olm. My god his spawn rate sucks..took me 2 days for me to get him. Finally got Olm (lvl 52 Comes with Claw 7, Dive 3 like the Ironbeak Hunter). By the way you have to change your rep with the local faction so you can tame him. Then i ended up in Winterspring...white owls everywhere i was pissed. But i stabled Olm and tamed a Winterspring Screecher (lvl 57 comes with Claw 8, Dive 3, Screech 4) learned the 2 new upgrades and got rid of it. Went back to Olm and trained him on the new skill upgrade. So next on my list is a lvl 66 owl that comes with Screech 5 and Claw 8. My advice to anybody would be to grab an owl..nobody has them. Everyone has cats and boars...BORING!!!

that website that the guy posted up there is really really good. you can search it on google to and its the first one. and i think the Teldrassil or whatever have all those attacks. and they are the only owl you can get until a lot higher lvls.
I'm a Level 70 hunter and I use an Owl as my main pet. Owls are great hunter pets, i was in an arena the other day, and my pet Soloed a Shaman, while my teammate and i took out the lock, sadly the shaman died b4 the lock.... The screech debuff is very helpful for PvE and even against warriors and other melee classes in arenas. The flapping can get annoying, but the owl overall is a great pet.

If you are lookin for a descent pet and are a high lvl you should tame the winterspring screecher they have 3 special skills and make alot of damage!

okay. if your a low lvl and you want an owl they are in Teldrassil right outside Darnassus. Strigid Owl, Screechers, and Hunters ranging from lvls 5-9 and lvl 9s come with Claw 2.
now for the 21 guy, i dont know what you are talking about when you say rabk. and if your a 21 the best Claw attack for you is Claw 3 not 2. you can find that almost anywhere. Shore Crawler in Westfall, Ashenvale Bear, and Grey Bear in Hillsbrad Foothills are some easy ones to get.

The only pets that can hold good multi target aggro are the ones that can use screech. The aoe debuff causes threat and 4 screech is about the same as one taunt. This mixed with go for the throat
from marks and that 100% faster focus from BM makes this pet tank like a druid before TBC. It helps if you have deep BM spec also for intimidate and BW for some extra aggro.

soo true i just tamed a lvl 66 owl.... and i (hate it but it was the only owl that had screech 5 and dive 3)am glad they will get the disarm abiltiy whe WOTLK comes out... only question is what to do with lvl ing these last for lvls and it needs 100k plus xp
