i wonder why people prefer cats over wind serpent, wind serpent can do almost the same damage as cats can, but w/ better health/armor. besides, wind serpents has a ranged atk, nice for chasing those runaway WSG flag carry people
You forget that cats can stealth and serpents cannot.
ive had many cats. i even had that white cat from barrens for over 20 lvls with one. echeyace or what name its hard to spell. and yes, stealthing is a cat ability, and echeyaches 2.0 AS make the highest dmg for that. but seriously, who does ever use it?

yeah, while wing-sperpants have a range attack (that only deals 25 natural damage at lvl 20, serpants have the exact same thing and does up to, what, +35 over 5 or 10 secs.

The great thing about windserpent is of course the breath attack. Unlike every other pet ability other the fire breath and I believe thunder stomp, this does non-physical damage. Thus it's a spell. Except for caster pets, the chance to crit with a spell attack is 0, but this will ignore all armour of the target. And it's instant, so if you have BD and GfrThroat, you can spam this attack and rape high armour classes

I would strongly suggest not getting Azzere. He is a "Caster Stat" Windserpent with lower health and armor. Yes, he looks cool with the solid red vs. Washte Pawne's (my pet) red and gold coloring. But he is going to be much more fragile. Washte Pawne is a lot easier to get and still looks great. Plus he makes a much better "tanking" pet.

Due to the Nature resistance in PvP being low usually, the enemy will not avoid it, and does great damage. However the pet still *IS* flawed in that when casting lightning your pet will stand still often. Even with swoop 3 this is a bad loss of speed. If you try controlling the pet yourself you will find that you can cast it while the pet is moving. Cats have their purposes but I don't think they are the End-All pet. STOP GETTING CATS AND DIVERSIFY DAMMIT. Wolves, Wind Serpents, Bears, Wolves, Bats, and the others even have their strengths. However, Bats + Rocs / Wind Serpents are the best in PvP, the Bats will kill your enemy's power (sadly with less personal gain) and the Wind Serpent lightning will kill your enemy at range when it must be done.

Yes, Caster Wind Serpents aren't as good. To avoid them make sure that the wind serpent does not have a mana bar under its hp bar when you tame it! It can also be noted that almost all GREEN and BLACK (dark blue?) wind serpents have the "good" stats. It should also be noted that WHITE Wind Serpents should be avoided until level 41 when you can tame Hayoc.
If you want a different color than Black or Green, you may need to be more careful, but sites like http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/ do list where you can find good windserpents. For a good early level red windserpent I would recommend Washte Pawne, a rare level 25 spawn in the barrens. If you like GOLD wind serpents, you must either tame a Deviate Coiler from Wailing Caverns or wait until level 48 and tame one in the Sunken Temple.... because the rest have CASTER STATS.
Perhaps the most unique of wind serpents are the Son of Hakkar (who used to change color each time you summon him, not sure if he still does), and the Spawn of Hakkar, who has a very nice red skin that is unique to him and Azzer the Skyblade (Azzer has caster stats). Anyways, the Spawn of Hakkar is in the ST, and Son of Hakkar is in ZG. I want to tame the Son soon and see if he still changes color.
My current windserpent is a Black/darkblue Deviate Dreadfang from WC. I was level 20 when I tamed her. Awesome pet, IMO, and Lightning breath has proved more useful than I would have thought in PvP.

Try looking for green windserpents in 1K needles *they are lv 26-27* (the white ones have caster stats)
Tame the ones in WC, not only are more colors in there (yellow, green, and the only dark-blue in game (lv 20-21)), the ones outside of Camp T have caster stats (it makes them do less dmg)
Sadly, the attack speed of ALL windserpents is 2.0

A wind serpant is one of the ulitmate high level PvP pets. They dont have a health and armor +% but they have not minuses and +7% on dmg.
But, the great thing about wind serpants that sets them apart from ALL pets is that they have LIGHTNING BREATH. This is usefull for PvP or non-soloing because (at rank 6 which you can only get from ZG son of hakkars) it does 99-113 dmg twice right off the bat. It does good dmg too and so it then flies in -attack-attack- focus recharges -lightning breath- etc... They have dive too, so if attacked they can retreat quickly.
However, cats are quite popular because of their +10% dmg and only -2% health. The problem is with cats that since they have several abilities, your training points can't go into armor or stamina or res and so they dont stand up that well in PvP. BTW prowl is a piece of crap (most of the time).
Overall, cats and wind serpents aren't the greatest of soloing pets (cats especially and wind serpents because they don't hold aggro well if they spend focus on lightning breath). If your soloing and like tank pets, get a turtle as an extreme, a boar as a better option. Bears are my favorite for soloing though because of their health and damage bonuses.
Anyhow, thats my two cents on wind serpents.
BTW someone might want to expand on this post about the beast mastery spec that sends ur pet into the rage. I've always been marksman/survival

Windserpants can tank, but not as well as pets that were made for tanking. If you want a tanking pet, there are many good ones to choose from (not just turtles). Here is a list of tanking pets and some strengths/weaknesses.
Bear - great health and armor and higher dps than other tanks because of both bite and claw.
Boar - considered by many to have the best armor/health increase balance in the game for taniking and can grab good initial aggro with Charge.
Scorpid (my personal favorite) - have excellant armor, but less health than some other tanks, but the stacking Scorpid Poison makes them ideal for killing elites and for long battles.
Turtle - best armor in the game and standing right next to the crab in that category, but also with Shell Shield for added protection at times. The problem with that is he does less damage and hence holds less aggro than other tanks.
Crab - same armor as the turtle but with higher dps thanks to Claw. They are for players who are tired of how little aggro a turtle can sometimes hold.
Gorilla - not as high of tanking stats as other tanks, but have an AoE that also generates extra aggro, making them ideal for taking on multiple foes.
Vulture - not considered by some to be tanks, but with Screech to lower enemy damage and hold aggro against groups, they can hold their own.
Plainstriders - some consider them to be useless, but their unusual appearence and ability to learn Dash make a good impression on some people.
Crocolisk - great armor but not many abilities. Also, some people get annoyed by the sounds they make.
I don't want to take up too much space, so I won't list BC tanks here unless someone requests it.
his name is arikara
you must do a quest in thousend needles
I know that many people have said that getting bite for a Windserpent is useless, but clearly there are certain situations in which you need bite to do decent damage with a Windserpent. The primary case I am talking about is fighting certain elementals - both earth and wind elementals are immune to nature damage, therefore making LB useless against them. If you want to use your pet for pvp only, you don't need bite, but if you plan on farming for motes (which I do very often), you will want the extra dps from bite. I use my Windserpent as an all-around dps pet (for pvp, pve, and farming), therefore I have taught him all possible abilities. Of course, I only turn bite on when fighting elementals obviously. I hope this helps people when deciding what to teach to their pet.
A level 11 "Deviate Coiler Hatchling" elite patrols the entrance of wailing caverns. I was able to get it solo at level 13...but it might have been to close to call if I was lvl 12, so if you want it earlier at lvl 11, I guess get a druid to hibernate it for you or get a real good HoT from a healer or maybe have a mage sheep it (heard that works...not sure though). I didn't need to go into the cave, just waited for it to come into range at the entrance before activating my taming rod... the deviate stalkers were deep enough inside as not to aggro them. Rank 1 lightning breath.
Its bigger brother, "Deviate Coiler" - lvl 15 or 16, is in a bit further but it's patrol takes it close to the entrance too, but not as close as the hatchling. You will need to kill at least one or two deviate stalkers and the above hatchling, so get a trash pet or friend to help clear the way. I tamed it by the skin of my teeth solo at level 17. Probably went no more than 30 feet into the cave. Rank 2 lightning breath.
Deeper into the cave and into the instance there are a number in the 16-21 range, but nothing beyond rank 2 lightning breath.
None of the wind serpents in Wailing Caverns have the dreaded caster stats that I know of, but, they are all elite and have lots of company. Avoid most wind serpents in the open Barrens as permanent pets, unless you’re just getting the rank 2 lighting breath for your hatchling - they all have caster stats except for one named mob. I hear a rare spawn just south of Camp T. called "Azzere the Skyblade" looks nice and hits you with a fire blast, but it's not a skill it keeps after being tamed. Also, it appears in a puff of smoke when summoned, but it is a caster and its ability to take hits only seems to decline as you progress in the game.
Washte Pawne (lvl 25) has rank 3 lightning breath. This is the only wind serpent in the open Barrens that I know of who doesn't have crappy caster stats - but I've not gotten far enough in the game as a hunter to tame him, so don't know what it takes.. The next wind serpents with rank 3 are the lvl 25-29's in thousand needles - but the only one without caster stats look to be the green "Venomous Cloud Serpents" lvl 26-28ish.
Damage stats for wind serpents are a wee bit lower than a cats on paper, but I think opening up with lightning breath from 20 yards makes up for that a bit and the better health makes up for the longer battles and getting adds. It takes half of its focus to cast lighting breath, but by level 31 with 22 points in Beast Mastery, ending with "Bestial Discipline", you can gain a 100% increase in focus regeneration and can use it more often. Another 12 points in Marksmanship, ending with "Go For the Throat", and you should really be able to spam it by lvl 43. Pwnage against high armor types for both PvP and PvE alike.
the closest to a lvl 10 windserpent is a Deviate Coiler Hatchling: lvl 11 in Wailing Caverns(Barrens) and comes with Lightning Breath 1. that was for Kilalakitty. i have no idea what luna is asking for
For those that don't know what caster stat pets are, there pets that normally have mana bars before there tamed , and have more spirit, Int and generally more melee crit from agility then normal pets of the same lvl and species. caster pets however usally have less health, armor, and melee DPS then normal pet stat pets.
Normally caster pets have inferior stats then a normal pets stats for pretty much every pet that is melee based attacker.
However, non caster pets do not get bonus spell crit from there int, caster pets do. This makes caster pet stats ideal for a wind serpent, because its primary attack is Lightning Breath. It is 100% nature spell damage. Also caster stat would probally be good for dragonhawks for there Fire Breath, and maybe to a lesser degree for gorillas for there thunderstomp, but gorillas are a toss up, since the CD on thunderstomp is so outragiously long it renders the skill useless. I would like to see Thunderstomp reduced down to at least 10-20 sec cd, not 1 min like it is now.
Caster pets like i stated before have more spirit..and this was always written in every post i ever read about caster pets as a negitive because pets don't have mana bars, but those people forget that spirit also effects health regen also.
BM is best earlier on once you get enough agility survival starts to pass BM in dps. Cats are nice and all but ravagers outdps them because of gore and if you have enough crit chance a windserpent outdpses them all. Why do people like you always have to dismiss things that you don't know. You should try other specs and pets instead of listening to everyone else.
Ranged attack is the hunters job not the pets.
Im getting kinda confused about this, does wind serpents do more damage than cats? on thottbot it says that ws does 7% and Cats 10%, and on http://www.wowhunterpets.info/ the stat looks like this:
Wind Serpent: Health: Medium, Armor: Low, DPS: Very High
Cat: Health: Medium, Armor: Low, DPS: High
and it says that wowhunterpets got the LATEST information about wow pets? If wowhunterpets got the right information, then ws is the pet with the highest dps..
It seems to be very gear dependant with the DPS of the WS compared to cats/ravager/raptor.
To make a WS work well, you will need OVER 30% ranged crit unbuffed (most probably as a 41/20/0 spec, with go for the throat)
This equates to... i dont know, but fully buffed with a feral druid in your group i would say easily enough crit. the large amounts of critting means that your pet will be constantly getting more and more focus and being able to blast out its beautiful pwnage breath (and possibly bites, though many people find this a waste of traingin points)
This is the ONLY time a WS beats a cat, because the breath does more dmg than bites etc. but costs alot more focus, so the contuniual focus regeneration is CRUCIAL for a hunter with a WS.
However the 30% crit mark is a large milestone, and you should be stacked with AGILITY gems and enchants where possible, not crit (agility increases crit and AP obviously, so it increases both yours and your pets DPS). If you want a WS its best to leave it until you have the correct gear for it, instead of doing anything crazy like resocketing all your gear for crit, as this will most probably decrease your damage radically.
hope this helped
wind serpents are pretty cool.
Probably the coolest looking pet in my opinion and great DPS
not that cool got a black rock scorpion very cool its only lvl 33 so im going to let it fight its own lvl so it can become a higher lvl :D
