Lupos used to be one of the best pets because he did shadow damage that bypassed armor, making him a very high damage pet. However, in the 1.9 patch, they nurfed him, turning him into a very average pet. Mist Howler is a better choice - 1.3 attack speed and very good pursuit speed. My choice was the Slavering Worgs found in Shadowfang Keep- 1.2 attack speed and runs fast as hell.

I've heard that taming a frost wolf in Alterac Valley will give you a pet with unfathomable speed. Corroborate?
I started with a bear...didnt like em cuz they didnt do enough damage...then i went to wind serpent but that died to fast...then i went to cat and loved the damage but always had to revive it....and now i've been with a wolf since i was 40 and they are the best...they are the most balanced between damage-armor-and skills

I have a slavering worg for PvP, mostly because I didn't want to be just another hunter with The Rake in 10-19 WSG. He does pretty well, and I have only had to revive him once.
If you are looking for an alternative for The Rake at low levels these guys are great. they have a 1.2 attack speed and you can tame one at level 18. I sort of perfer him to the rake at lvl 19 because where the rake gets claw and bite, the Worg gets furious howl. Pet damage is minimal at low level WSG and the abilities are what can truly be useful. That and caster interruption. and to the guy looking for pictures of all the different skins. check http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/

First off, do research. Find out what abilities you want out of a pet and choose one. I will use the new beast Elder Springclaw in this example. They are in the Eversong Woods near SIlvermoon City. A perfect first pet. When you get them they come with Claw Rank 2. When you use them for a while (less than 5 times) it chould say "You have learned Claw 2..." Something like that. You now have the ability to train that Talent to any pet that is capable of Claw... (Cats, Bears... look at Petopia or Good Intentions for details.)
Another example... Worgs Lvl 10-11(?) come with Bite Rank 2 and Howl Rank 1. The Mottled Worg and various other Wolves might not come with one of those or either of them. Go and tame the Worg, use him for a little while until you learn those abilities and then Tame the Wolf type of animal you want. When they have the training points available, train them. I know this stuff has been posted before, but hopefully it will help out some of the newer players from having to sift through the other stuff here. Heh, had to add my two cents here.
I'm not gonna argue which pet is THE best, as I think that really depends on what the hunter is wanting and how they spend talents. But, I WILL say that for the way I'm built wolfs are second to none. Why you ask? Simple. I'm an orc hunter, with engineering. I'm hybrid build and focus on adding as much extra damage potential to my own, or my partys attacks, as I can. Improved hunters mark, 3 ranks in expose weakness, and the orc racial (which also adds extra attack power to your pet while its going) gives my pet (and party) some nice added whack. So where does the engi come in? Well, I get to make nice little attack bots. Even though they do crappy damage, when you add in the above +s I mentioned that crap adds up QUICK. Wolfs howl is just added icing on the cake. (Trust me, even one on one pvp'in, me and 2 pets doing +30 dam on their next attack is nothing to laugh at.)And to top it off, orc pets do +5% dam which is nice seeing as wolfs get no dam bonus. So, in my humblest of opinions :P, Wolfs own. EDIT- I should add that I am a primarily melee focused hunter, the awesomeness of the wolf is seriously downgraded if you're going ranged spec. (Don't waste your time telling me how melee hunts suck lol, I love mine and we can always duel to find out <3.) Re: Wolf by hubeb, Score 0.27 I could offer some advice. If you're going full beast mastery build, then I would recommend a boar or cat. Bite + Claw, and the ability to Dash added to nice bonus dam make cats great at piling on damage. If you build heavily focused on talents that activate when your pet crits though, Boars are where its at. (I believe Gore has at least a 50% crit, and Charge is awesome) If you're going full ranged you might want to consider some of the other pets first, with my top advice being get a scorp. Since you wont be spending alot of talents to buff your pet, the default +10% armor can help alot and if you spend some talents in Improved Stings you and it together can add some serious DPS. And as I said, if you want to be a weirdo and make a melee hunter then I strongly recommend a Wolf. Anyways, just advice, but I hope it helped. in my opinion cats and raptors are the best pets. So here they are:
Takk the leaper -Barrens -lvl 19 elite Echeyakee -Barrens -lvl 16 -spawned (horde quest= so your a total stud if your Alliance and have him) Ghost Saber -Darkshore -lvl 19 those are pretty rare and can be hard to get. good luck p.s. wolves DONT have damage. they have armor. thats actually all they have. look at the top of the page.

really depends on what your looking for. for damage i say Cats and Raptors are the best. for tanking i, personally have a gorilla because i like them better, but would suggest Gorilla, Bear, Boar or Turtle. I kind of put Wolves in a class of there own because they dont have a whole lot of damage but i think they look cool. and there armor isnt bad either.
its really up to you. hunters are all about having a cool pet that you like. if you hate the pet that you have but it has good stats, then your defeating the purpose of a hunter. find the one that you like. heres a website that helps A LOT: http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/

i'm lvl65 ne hunter with 2 mains, frostsaber stalker and plagued swine... i've been apoplectic over not having more pet slots forever...
i've only had one wolf, longtooth runner and loved it... got caught up in trying new pets and let him go planning of coming back to wolves with bloodaxe worg... only later to realize that worg aren't wolves and look stuupid... anyway, i'm 2 bars from 66 and will waltz over to meet rema for a little talk very soon... i believe she is the last sniffin and scratchin wolf in the game (and a brown one a level below)... i think at that point i will be done taming pets WHICH SUCKS... i 'need' a pet with prowl to go with shadowmeld, and i 'need' a charging boar... the 2 pets in contention for the final slot are the wolf and the windserpent... i've never had a windserpent, and sadly may not on this my first toon... (if the wolf disappoints me i will get a lvl67 windserpent) i've tried birds and bats a few times and love them except for the deal breaking wings flapping in my face and ears (the bats are less audibly offensive)... never (really) used a scorpid cause i like having tight control over my dot for crowd control, i think i would just forget and try to trap mobs my scorpid already stung... i had fun with ucha for about 5 levels and would have kept him if he had dash... but in the end he was just to slow for my taste... for non ne hunters i can see switching from the cat to a ravager or a raptor cause the bonus from prowl isn't significant (though maybe full bm build and devilsaur tooth would be nice opening from stealth) -- BUT for surviving in 'over-u'r-head' circumstances in pve, shadowmeld/prowl is as valuable to me as the pet first aid talents -- sort of like a free few talent points... i don't do much pvp but have to imagine that combo could work there too... i don't think i could go without a stealthy cat in the stable, thus the first permanent resident... before i get into my reasons for loving charge, is anyone else having a problem with charge not popping mid-dash? my pig will charge with dash active if he attacks a mob within his charge range-- but if he has begun dashing, he wont charge out of it... is this a glitch? or maybe by design?? the boar has permanent residency with or without ability to charge with dash, but it would be very sweet if the two can be combined... anyway, charge is like driving a giant stake through the foot of the mob u'r hitting, fixing him firmly to whichever planet u'r standing on... as a mostly mm hunter (20/32/3)? the mad aggro developed by charge is my best friend when i'm soloing... u have to be careful that u get u'r pigs charge off cause tho he is still a good enough tank with dash to boot, i find the boar is most awesome when i am being methodical and assasinate one mob after the other-- in a mad tussle against multiple mobs, nothing beats my armored/stamina'd up cat... (no dash is only reason i haven't used bears [that, and and their dumb animation]) <side note: wtf is up with the miniture sized pets? big pets would be a pain in cities? dranei get big fat elephants to ride on! i want a bear worthy of the name! a freshly animated big fuckin bear with dash> when i am with any other pet (even the incredible invisible cat) i find myself getting pissed when i pull a mob off my pet... i can slow down, but i can't un-know the fact that i dont have to with the boar... another question: at least 4 of my last 5 talent points are going into bm... 2 in focus, and maybe 1 in intimidation... i'm guessing that intimidation works kind of like charge, thus giving my cat for example the ability to rush in at dash3 and instantly grab a pile of aggro?? anyway my mind has been wondering (what can i tell u? i'm in northern cali)... i'm looking forward to playing with the awesome wolf again and think the windserpent and his lightning breath will have to wait for my next hunter... all dogs are good. I have a few things to say:
One, Sorry people, but I don't believe Ghost Howl is tamable. I haven't tried it, but it's what I've heard. Go ahead and try, but be prepared for disappointment. Second, I'm a 40 troll hunter, Beast Master spec. with a pet wolf that has all available pet trainer upgrades, and level 2 or 3 furious howl (can't remember which is available at 40, been a while). Best all-around tanking/light damage pet i've ever had. An extra 20 damage on your next attack ain't too shabby either. Three, yes, people are right: You have to tame a pet that knows that ability; Not all pets from a certain family know it, and there may be none that do. (Like Tallstriders and Dash).
