Those gates are the things the dragons guard. At this point nothing is on the other side, but I believe lore says that it is the Emerald Dream. Honored reputation does give a reduction in the cost of flights from Wildhammer gryphon masters.

The vendor benefits are insignificant compared to almost all other factions. Chances are you'll hardly ever visit the Wildhammers.

Most reputation can be gained from killing trolls in the Hinterlands, not specifically the Troll Necklace repeatable quest. That necklace quest is just a bonus since they drop off the same trolls. Consequently the best time to gain this is mid-40s. Honored can be gained by grinding for approximately one level. Remember that after level 50-ish, the reputation will start coming in very slowly. Gaining Wildhammer reputation at level 60 will take five times as long as at 45.

If you are going to grind something mid-40s, trolls in the Hinterlands might make a good strategy: Wildhammer reputation, reasonable Mageweave Cloth drops, and little competition from other players. Hard to recommend otherwise, unless you just have to have everything.

There's a book inside Aerie Peak telling that after the huge war between the three dwarven clans (Bronzebeard, Wildhammer and Dark Iron) the Wildhammers left Ironforge and founded a new kingdom, Grim Batol, which appears as a closed instance in Wetlands, and is also the name of the whole area to the East of boht Wetlands and Loch Modan.

The Dark Irons didn't forget that they lose to the Bronzebeard and years (or centuries, I don't remember) after that launched an attack on the (now) Bronzebeard city of Ironforge. By then the Wildhammers were again allies of the Bronzebeard and helped defeat the Dark Irons.

The Dark Iron spells, however, caused the Wildhammers to lose Grim Batol. So they moved further North, into Aerie Peak, where they're living now.

So, I think that the Wildhammer Clan faction will be the one linked to either the Grim Batol instance, or the eastern Grim Batol territory, or both, once they appear in the game. More or less, let's say, in the same way the Gnomeragan Exiles faction is strongly linked with their lost Gnomeragan city: as an attempt to recover what's rightfully theirs.

By the way, the Horde will probably also have a faction linked to this (if this faction already doesn't exist), since after the Wildhammers left Grim Batol the place was used by Horde Orcs as a breading place for red dragons. This was when the Horde was slave of the Burning Legion, and had the dragon king Alexstrassa as their slave. When Alexstrassa was freed she killed all orcs there. And as a result, Grim Batol is ex-home to both the Wildhammers and an (as of yet unnamed?) group of Orcs.

Until then, building reputation with the Wildhammer will probably be useless. Only pursue this if you don't have anything better to do. ;)

      Heya guys...

Well, took the time to read the different posts and it all seems that you're all bugged by the time consuming process it is to get rep with these guys.

I stumbled by chance with me 60 on the whiterbarks in Arathi when grinding some mats and I got rep for killing them.
So what I did next was that the lvl 34 mage I am lvling at the time was sent to Hinterlands just to get neutral with Wildhammers right away.
Then when you do the quest(s) in Arathi which involves killing the Whitherbarks you'd be grinding rep for Wildhammer at the same time.

Its pretty easy, they go down fast when you are lvl 34, and the camps are close to eachother.
Atm I get 5-6 rep points a kill...

Unfortunately you wont be earning rep for handing in the Arathi quests, but still... its a head start. I reckon you could get half to friendly before you leave Arathi.

Hope this will help you out :)

I've been working hard to finish all my factions before the expansion and Wildhammer Clan is the last one I'm still neutral with. Getting to exalted would be next to imposable so I was just going to get them to friendly and leave it there for now. During the long boring grind I decided to check the PTR to see if there were any new quests or rep gain changes, what I found was that the Wildhammer Clan faction has been totally removed and you can no longer interact with the necklace turn-in NPC. It’s possible this is a glitch or even that their faction is now considered an expansion only faction so maybe someone with a beta key could confirm.

To my fellow faction junkies who have put the time and effort into grinding you have my condolences, personally I’m still going to get to friendly, as the above posts mention there is plenty of  indications that the Wildhammer Clan may be  an important faction at some point, especially since Blizzard has placed an Exodar Ambassador there with several quests. Blizzards most likely reasoning for this is that they have some content planned for Wildhammer rep and they don’t want people to get to far ahead of the game… or they have nothing planned and have decided that teasing people with endless faction grinding is cruel and unusual 
