I managed to find a way for my lvl47 Warlock to Shattrath City via a lovely mage friend of mine by creating a portal.
2 other lvl60 friends joined me for my dangerous travels across the lands to Thrallmar (horde trainers) along the way I picked up the FPs in Zangramarsh, missed the one at Falcon Watch and headed straight for Thrallmar.

You need to be at least lvl 50 for Grand Mastery and costs 10g.

So I'm going to have to level 3 more before going back again.

I also then realised that the FPs didn't link up from Thrallmar unless I got the FP from Falcon Watch, so don't forget to get that if you're going to try my crazy stunt!

you could have set your hearthstone there and returned whenever you wanted...it has no level requirement to hearth back there

If you're alliance...you don't need to get the friends to escort you. Get a port to Shatt and go to the FP...you'll find that you conveniently have the flight paths for the Gate and Honor Hold...the grand master tailor is in the top floor of the inn at HH. My 345 Tailor is only level 56 and I have every pattern the trainers can teach. I don't know what level you have to be to get the specialties though, the specialty trainers don't have any quests for me yet.

is Shattrath the only place to get past 300 tailoring? (or better yet... so i finally need to buy the BC expansion once i hit lvl 50 and 300 tailoring?)

Yes you should buy TBC soon and bring up your character's level and tailoring. I still don't understand how people haven't gotten TBC if it's been out for a while already. There is just so much more things available to you but people just waste their time doing BG and trying to get their pre TBC patterns when they could be leveling up and getting patterns from bosses in instances or rep rewards. There are some real sweet rep patterns for tailoring. Once I start playing my priest again I'll take advantage of it.

Got at lvl 48 to Shatt'rath by asking for a portal (/who mage 70) which was no problem. Tried to get to Temple of Telhamat alone but got killed - which was actually perfect because the graveyard is right next to the temple and by approaching the flightmaster you get as well the flight path to honor hold. I could then fly there and put my hearthstone there - tailoring >300 only possible at lvl 50. I could easily come back and forth.....

I wish someone would simply say that the 300+ trainer is in the Honor Hold Inn in Hell Fire, Name Hama, on second floor..Done
