I don't recall ever saying pets should tank.  I just stated that my pet has "out tanked" warriors in some of the runs I've been in.

Doesn't take away the fact that healers still tend to forget about pets.

On my priest, I have gotten many a thanks from hunters and warlocks alike, because I didn't forget their best friend.

Everyone has a role in groups.  Just so happens that healers forgetting about pets is one of the most often griped about things I see on hunter forums.  And that's because it's an obvious issue.  It's not that every hunter doesn't know how to play.

But I love this armor because this set because the pet is not forgotten.  I'm spec'd BM, which means my whole strategy is geared around my pet.  If I was MM, I probably wouldn't even bother having my pet out on a group run.

Problems with hunters without pets are the crits.  If I crit without my pet, I don't care what tank is out there, most of the time I will draw agro after the crit.  And then that means I'm usually dead.  With my pet I can guarantee an Intimidation that will give me the opportunity to keep fighting.

But let that pet die, most BM hunters will be screwed.

Now, just to get this set so I don't have to worry about a healer as often.  LOL

Turn off growl. Growl on a MM hunter is incredibly overpowered. When my pet pulls aggro, i don't expect him to be healed. The only time a pet should be healed is when its offtanking something on purpose, not because you're saying "ZOMG LOL MAI PET PULLED AGGRO OFF U L2TANK NUB LOLOL"

i have a warrior and a hunter, and my pet tends to pull aggro as does my hunter. but when my warrior tanks, almost no one pulls aggro, why? because i can tank and know how to do it well. i love it when a healer heals my pet, it means i dont have to use the crappy tank that i grouped with. if a tank doesnt know how to hold aggro, then they need to reroll their class. a sunder/revenge combo is all they need to do, and some tanks i group with dont know that, aka i trust my pet, and a good healer does too.

it's nice you can have your pet growl and steal aggro from the warrior as he's building up aggro.

gg, now that mobs aren't hitting the tank, the tank isn't getting the extra rage from being hit. Of course you're gonna 'out tank' a warrior with an empty rage bar! With that source of rage gone, it becomes harder for him to get it back. THEN when the priest who is healing everyone gets aggro because NEITHER one of you has built up enough aggro. Your pet isn't exactly going to "taunt" now is he? oh wait, yeah ur pet is the best tank in the world. Out-tanks a warrior every time. BM spec? Wow have intimidation, once every *60* seconds. A warrior can immeditely pull multiple mobs off a healer every few seconds if needed. How are you at "out-tanking" with more than 1 mob? How about disrupting spell casting with your tank?

Oh how cute, you were able to steal aggro.. ur special!

If you lrn2play with others as a group like my hunter, you would know to turn off your fricking growl if your pet is attacking the same target as the warrior who's tanking. Growl is only used while offtanking which is needed to keep aggro off the healer. When I'm playing my warrior, if I'm getting beat on by 2-3 mobs, I often have a full rage bar to work with, which is a great resource. Having enough rage to put 5 sunders on 2-3 mobs and then whacking off Devastate is alot better than having to wait for enough rage to drop a sunder/dev and not having any spare rage for shield block to guarantee revenge to light up which in combination is both damage mitigation and aggro building.

Just as bad as hunter pets are some feral druids. Nice aggro gaining ability, if I have less than 3 sunders sure they can steal aggro. So I'm beating on the mob with my 1 hander barely gaining any aggro, then mob runs to the healer, and me with a nearly empty rage bar... thanks for making my job 10 times harder.

They all think how cute it would be if he could steal aggro from one of my mobs. So this one time, I'm tanking in ramparts, a druid starts attacking the dragon right when it landed. Wow ur such a great tank, mr druid. too bad you were between the party and the dragon, so when he turned to you, you wound up frying the casters behind you.

And don't come back with 'well ur a bad tank'.. if you just pick up a new target and you're starting with low/no rage and 0 aggro, you don't really have alot to work with. Once I've gotten a devastate in, no one's stealing aggro from me.

my instance group from ramparts to the crypts have been my hunter and another hunter, priest, and lock, with other guildies tanking. great having 2 offtanks (plus freezing traps for cc). Pets make a great 'extra' party member. Weve even run sethekk with no warrior (2 hunters, priest, lock, rogue) by pet offtanking and us hunters getting aggro via supreme dps, and dpsing down mobs running for us (slowed with conc shot) the rogue backstabbing all the way.

First of all, saying BM hunters easily outdamage MM hunters is spreading nonsense. I've been ahead 10% to 20% in dps when running with BM hunters. Sure, you'd complain about them being incorrectly specced or poorly skilled, but the same can be said about the MM hunters you've compared yourself with. With the appropriate talent choices -meaning do not skip things like Careful Aim and Master Marksman- an MM hunter does excellent dps.

Secondly, as an MM hunter, I can assure you I bring pets to group runs. With the right resistances and some attention from the healer, even MM pets can off-tank many mobs in the five mans for a while. Obviously, being substantially weaker than BM pets, mine will die quicker and more often, but that's mostly when nasty AoE abilities come into play. Blizzard admitted that these are a problem even for BM pets, hence the new Avoidance skill being introduced in 2.10, and Cleaves becoming 180 degree effects (so dps pets should simply be positioned behind the target). I expect BM pets will be powerful enough to even tank most bosses in five mans after that patch, which is certainly something MM hunters shouldn't try.

The deciding difference between BM and MM hunters, is that BM hunters can bring a tough pet for groups that want an off-tank and utility, or a dps pet for groups that want dps and utility. On the other hand, MM hunters are less versatile, as they really fit into the dps and utility part only.

At the end of the day, the point I'm trying to make, is that hunters should always bring their pets. Even if you're 'just' a marksman hunter, that pet is still part of your class, so you need to work with it. Have it save a healer by peeling a mob off, have it add dps to the main target, etc.

Damn right. I am a Marksman (9/47/5) and I double the damage by our guild's BM hunters in 10 man raids. While their pets can survive a few extra seconds should the mob/boss break away from tank, If you know how to play your hunter (like me) then even MM pets can hold aggro and NOT DIE until the tank gets back on it. Anyone who says MM hunters are useless in raids have never met me, and i challenge them to a duel.
