I was soloing him as a lvl 70 rogue, and a stupid lost spirit started hitting me and i almost died.. so I vanished, but i could see the worm moving around under the ground.  So i ate some food and re-aggroed the worm.. he had full health again but after a few seconds he just died!  I was able to loot him too and got the quest done.
