okay, a lot of pepople have been saying that tailoring isn't a good profession with which to make gold. This may be the case if you are on an ancient server, and very few new characters are being made. Heres why:
-much less linen/wool/silk/mageweave is being unintentionally farmed by newbs and sold on the AH. so the price is higher, and the value of gold itself is lower since all of the level 70's are bringing in 100g/day with ease
-there is much lower demand for the low level items(especially bags) that you're going to be making.
I am on a fairly new server, and since a vast majority of the players are in the low level range at which cloth drops like flies.... getting mats is a breeze. Also, EVERYTHING i make sells for a profit. It may be a slim profit, but if i'm buying stacks of silk for 50s each, then turning that silk into bags and selling those bags for 50s each.... i am getting paid to level up my tailoring profession.
Here are a few tips:
-the very second you learn to make a new type of bolt, make that type of bolt! you will need the bolts to make things anyways, so you might as well get the freebie profession levels while you can. ie... the very second you can make bolts of wool cloth, make them until you no longer gain tailoring levels from making them. then, start using those bolts to make goods.
-bags bags, and more bags. bags are a guaranteed source of profit. it may be slim, but it will be more than enough to cover your mat expenses. On my server, i was buying stacks(20) of silk for 50s. I then turned each of those stacks into 5 bolts of silk(until it wouldnt level up my tailoring skill anymore). I then turned all of those bolts into small silk packs(10 slot bag). i then sold each of those bags for 50s(or more). Meaning: for every 1.5g i paid in mats, i got 2.5g in AH profit. I got paid about 15g to level up my tailoring skill 75 points..... not bad.
-be smart..... look for bulk buys on mageweave and runecloth. then turn it into bags. the cheaper you can get your mats, the more profit you will be making. Also, while leveling your tailoring skill.... use your brain. If at a particular level of tailoring you can't create anything that will both sell easily, and level up your skill, make whatever item will consume the least amount of resources to level up your skill. for example at around 210-225, i made orange mageweave shirts simply because they only required one bolt to make. i even managed to sell most of them in the AH for 50s each by saying "they give you that cooool black-arm look".
Tailoring, like any crafting profession is NOT going to bring you as much total income as a gathering profession. However, it WILL bring you SOME income, as well as give you the ability to make some great end-game items for yourself once you hit the big 350-375 range. furthermore, you get free bags for you and your guildies, which is a big plus. I personally have found tailoring to be much more profitable than either blacksmithing, or leatherworking... mostly due to the high demand for bags. But, if you want a profession combination that will yield you the greatest amount of gold income.... go with 2 gathering skills.(especially at low character levels)
