I also have max fishing skill, and even with +52 in item buffs and a +100 lure I still occasionally get the "Your fish got away" when fishing in certain parts of Skettis. Never seen Mr. Pinchy yet and I've caught over 100 Furious Crawdads so I have no idea how many catches that is!
Just for info, on the western side of the island in Skettis (where the school is), 427 skill is not enough to even cast the line. On the north-east side, it is enough to cast.
Is the required reaction time related to what is hooked? Without lures I can catch a lot of Barbed Gill Trout, but not I never get a Golden Darter. With +100 lure, I get more than just trout. I think the reaction time required may be related to the difficulty of the actual fish that has bitten, and the catches that escape at 527 skill might be a Mr. Pinchy.
