I'd like to point out that if you are new to Warcraft or are starting up with a friend on a new server, this is not a good profession to start without support.

For some unexplicable reason, Blizzard almost completely skipped over iron and steel in the skill progression for jewelcrafting.  (I guess they felt only bronze and mithril makes pretty jewelry.)  As a result, there's a large gap between the level requirements for the raw materials/finished products and your actual character level.  You will need mithril starting at 30 or so and thorium around 40.  If you are a miner, you will rarely be able to support yourself at these levels with this ore.

What it comes down to is that you either need to fund purchases on the AH or go prospecting for gems for yellow and possibly even green combines.  In either case you will need tons and tons of ore, above and beyond even the high costs of blacksmithing.

Until Blizzard addresses this gap, it will be very difficult for starting characters to get to 300.  You might want to look into something else.

Actually, I have found that the break between the lvls in JC simlpy gave me a chance to mine and sell more ore for profit as JC takes so much less in the way of ore to lvl than blacksmithing, i simlpy had to wait for 15 lvls to get to another trainer to up my skill above 300, the mats to raise the skill from 300 to 345 only ran me about 50 since i did not have the lvl to go and obtain them myself, 50 gold that was easily made in 2 runs at my local mining hole picking up iron and mithril...However i can see where raising this skill on an alt would be simply quicker if you have someone who is already carriing the higher lvl gems from outlands...otherwise i say its a great choice for a first time character, as good jewelry for lower lvl toons is one of the hardest things to find.

and what do you base this opinion on?

        Jewelcrafting is not useless because...

        1. BoP purple gems recently added to the game

        2. Prospecting ore is one of the fastest ways to make money in this game and even more so when paired with mining

        3. BoP trinkets such as Talasite Owl are useful even into some further raiding content.

Great proffesion to start with as it gives you amulets, rings and trinkets before they start droping or from quest rewards.  Also these are some of the most expensive items in ah at the beginning.

I started my first character with jewelcrafting and mining.  Dont really have anything to compare with except ppl on my friends list who leveled at the same pace as me, but I generally had more gold than them. And never found it hard to make more gold.  A quick mining run from a well known area from time to time to increase your skill and as a rule of thumb the more materials a ring needs the more you can sell if for.

      Addons really helped!

Well, I am brand new to WoW and have a friend whom I asked not to help me out at all, he gave me 5 gold. I took JC and mining and for the first 15 levels of my Warlock i have hovered around 6 to 7 gold.

It is not stellar money but decent non the less and I am able to make items to fill out slots that I haven't had to purchase or quest for yet.

although it can be difficult to lvl starting out if ur running solo, JC is one of my favorite professions, and i have toons with almost every profession now. as for jc being useless pre-hyjal, apparently you havent checked out the trinkets. Im an orc hunter on malygos and ive been using the jc trinkets for months now and havent even been thru kara yet, so far ive found only one pre-black temple trinket that outdoes the jc ones and that still leaves me with one trinket spot, so im very pleased with jc and i would say, dont let anyone convince you that any of the professions are useless b/c all of them have their positive and negative sides but for the most part anyone can benefit from just about any profession.

the gap really hurts on some servers on my server 1 mithril stack can cost 15-20g so it really is expensive to get your JC up to a very high lvl. thorium can cost like 25-30g per stack sometimes even higher.

I don't agree. Yes Jewelcrafting can be expensive, and frustrating to level. If you want to make gold, it's the only way to go. I have made over 20,000 gold on Auction House sales. Stick with it, and when you get to 375, watch the gold roll in.

I make reasonable money at low level. My toon is lvl 21 (I think) and when I make moonsoul crowns I make at least 8g profit per crown. Ok I have to learn to use the AH to my advantage and buy low and sell high but hey it pretty good money for level 21. Also rings and necklases sell pretty well too as like others have said, you dont get ring drops till higher level. I also have mining so low level rings are free or very cheap to make. I think it depends what uare expecting to make. I think for money making at low level its between LW and JC. I havent even left exodar for ages to mine. Pretty cheapto buy the ore, smelt it myself (unles bars are cheaper at the time) and make more stuff to sell.

Just my opionin, I hoipe I dont get slated for it or called names like some people like to do if they disagree with someone

it requires too much patience.  i started grinding for jc recipies in netherstorm and i grinded for two days.  i didnt get a single recipie.  in the end, i decided to sell all my primal manas that i got and then bought The Eye of The Night for 100g on the AH.  That was the cheapest good recipie ive ever seen. You have two choices usually.  Grind for a week and get one or 0 recipies, or buy them on the AH for 200-300g.
