I'd like to point out that if you are new to Warcraft or are starting up with a friend on a new server, this is not a good profession to start without support.
For some unexplicable reason, Blizzard almost completely skipped over iron and steel in the skill progression for jewelcrafting. (I guess they felt only bronze and mithril makes pretty jewelry.) As a result, there's a large gap between the level requirements for the raw materials/finished products and your actual character level. You will need mithril starting at 30 or so and thorium around 40. If you are a miner, you will rarely be able to support yourself at these levels with this ore.
What it comes down to is that you either need to fund purchases on the AH or go prospecting for gems for yellow and possibly even green combines. In either case you will need tons and tons of ore, above and beyond even the high costs of blacksmithing.
Until Blizzard addresses this gap, it will be very difficult for starting characters to get to 300. You might want to look into something else.
