My experience taming as a Horde hunter:
I just went and got this spider last night as a Troll, I was lvl 21 by the time I got to Bloodmyst Isle. I wouldn't want to do it on a PvP server, but on PvE it went smoothly (other than WoW glitching on me and kicking me off the server right after I got on the boat over to the Isles, and then putting me under Stonetalon until some guildies summoned me out!!)
Ahem anyway, second run over to the boat, easily swam under the docks at Auberdine and drowned myself, then rezzed on the ship. It was late so I didn't even see other players around though there is a Sentinel that patrols the dock to keep an eye out for. There weren't even guards near the ship's landing point so easy to go around the couple NPCs near the dock. Running over to Bloodmyst Isle was also easy, and I cleared out the other spiders in the area, ditched my temp pet, and then pulled Z with Concussion Shot into a Freezing Trap, got it about 3/4 tamed before it broke free. It does attack quite fast so I imagine it'd be difficult if you can't mitigate part of the attack time, so I suggest being lvl 20 for a much easier time. Spent a little time killing the spiders and webbed victims there after to build up its loyalty and level (respawn time is pretty good and they sometimes drop small venom sacs if you're working on First Aid, as well as stuff you can feed your spider, as it has a meat-only diet.)
The spider does get pretty small, but I think part of it is its a pretty oversize spider to begin with, and its very thin and spindly so appears smaller when it probably has the same mass including legs as other pets. I did make a screenshot of it fighting itself after it respawned (the respawn time didn't seem too long) and it barely was as tall as one leg segment lol. Its also pretty hard to see on darker terrain.
This could be a pro or con to people, but it still makes the same scary shriek as it attacks which is somewhat loud. I can't wait to freak out people in PvP, I think any of the thorny spiders are among the coolest in the game. It crawls smoothly to its target and while the idle animations aren't anything special they're still decent. Havn't seen it swim yet though I noticed most pets now have swim animation.
I havn't seen anyone else on my server with this pet, horde or alliance. Despite spiders sadly only having Bite its still a cool pet. (I still hope they'll get some kind of poison or web ability some day.)
I would be interested to see how much it grows by lvl 70 though. :D
