Decide what stats you want on your armor/weapons, rate them accordingly, if you want primarily spell damage, secondary crit/hit, 3rdly intellect/spirt, and lastly stamina.  You can set values of 1,.9,.9,.8,.8,.7 in that order for listed stats, which is what most ppl seem to be doing, not really sure why that is, but the way I do it is set spell damage to a value such as 10, crit/hit to 8, etc. using whole numbers, I guess it doesn't matter which way you do it, the first method results in small scores, but I like thinking in whole numbers better than decimals.

Next decide what stats, you absolutely don't want touching you, as a caster I don't think you will be wanting any strength/agility, if you don't PVP you will likely not want resilience partially because to acquire that stuff requires that you PvP, maybe you want to avoid anything with spirit.  Don't just convert these valuse to 0, that may not push them off table, set them as negative numbers, pick a number such as -100, this will ensure you never see an item come up with that stat on it.  Yes negative numbers work, non of the posted examples use them as far as I can tell.

Next if you can only wear cloth, go down to the multiplier's and select the other options and turn them to 0, this will score all items that are not cloth as 0.  Also do the same for weapons you can't use, perhaps you are partial to swords because you have a sword specialization talent, or the human racial bonus, than rate those values as slightly high, like 1.1.  Maybe you don't have an offhand item to pair a 1 hander, so you would prefer to find a good staff, set the staff value as 1.1.

After making changes click the save button.

Ok now to find stuff with a high score, goto find armor or weapons, enter any further custom filters, for example, you may want to ensure your items have some stamina even if you scored it low, select stamina and set it to >0.  If you are looking for items for a certain slot, I suggest you add that filter in as well, displaying all the items, when you are looking to upgrade your helm probably won't go as planned.

Lastly select the checkbox display top 50 to get the filtered items top ranked by your customized score values.  If you still get items with undesirable stats, go back into the custom score screen and make those stats a negative score, or if you already did, make it more negative.  Another thing you may want to do if you are getting items that are from instances like black temple, and your guild isn't doing black temple yet, you should set a maximum item level
