I have just reached 70 on my paladin and I am wondering if i should go ret or holy. I have seen ret pallies do some crazy dps, but lots of people have been telling me tha ret pallies suck. Personally i think healing is boring though....what do you guys(and girls)think?

Do what you want. I have a 70 holy pally, 1300 healing, 190mp/5 and I'm never bored. I'm ensured a raid spot, a spot in heroics, etc. Our guild has no ret pallies. I don't think our server even has any raiding ret pallies. Do what is fun for you.

lol ret pally is same as prot pally dps? yeah I must admit there are some ret pallies out there who do get outdpsed by tanks but when they know what theyre doing they do some insane dps

When people laugh at retribution I want to spec it even more, just so I can smash their face with my hammer.

retri pallies can be really useful in arenas because the have a large amount of burst damage, but once our cooldowns are going the dps is more steady and SoCommand procs aren't that reliable, so our dps can be outhealed.

this person speaks the truth.  ret pallies can put out some very nice burst damage but they cant do it often enough.  also everyone knows spikey damage = you pulling aggro and pallies have no threat wipe so you kinda have to take the beating when you do pull hate.

supposedly being looked into for 2.3 though so maybe we'll see more ret pallies around.  but as of now, you'll only ever see a pally tanking or healing in real guilds.

I have a lvl 70 holy paladin and in my opinion i say holy is the best as more people need healers for Kara, ret is the dps side so the best build is to go holy.

retri pallys rules for lvling, but when your lvl 70 nearly every pally change to holy.
i don't get why. i have a retri pally lvl 45 and i was holy 40-42 it's really fun but still retri is better for lvl....

Pally change to holy at 70 because raids don't need retri but always need healing, plus pally auras very handy. Leave DPS to classes that are best at it, pallies like shammies are uber-support bots in raids.

okay i have a 70 pally and i have nothing against ret pallys but ret is not an option if your gonna be serious about raiding. 1 you can do nice burst damage but in boss encounters yo will come no were close to the main dps classes so your wasting a spot for another healer or a better dps class. 2 the people the get offended and list 1 pally with the best possible gear out there whos gonna smash your face with his hammer stfu i bet if u look at the dam meter at the end hes not even close the top.

as fun as ret pallys r, they kind of suck lol.
my guy was pretty geared out and was doing only 1k crits.(the lock next to me was doing like 3-4k crits)
also in raiding ppl will definitly choose a mage, lock, or rogue instead of a ret pally, and will most definitly want heals.

Being a skilled ret pally is extremely gear dependent. I would recommend going shockadin if you want to dps, which is a combination of ret + holy. I had a guildie who tried this spec. We ran a 5 man and he out dpsed our rogue and mage by over 10%. However, he had been collecting gear from kara and pvp so he had mostly all epics and roughly +1000 spell dmg with buffs/consumables. But really, a holy pally is still much more viable in a raid 99% of the time unless you got the gear to dps.

indeed...some people have mentioned it->retri pala has awesome burst damage fom time to time but relies heavily on the gear...unlike prot, which is my pala's specc ;) i can easily tank 5 mobs of my lvl and i got greens + a few blues (lvl 54 mind you)...also i beat lvl 60 rogues sometimes

anyway i tried holy too and i liked it actually...

Ok for general, holy is best. For 10 man you probably want 1 tank, 1 off tank, and 5-6 dps and 2-3 healers. All classes can dps, paladins just dont do as much as alot of others, holy pallies bring alot more to the table.

Prot. Pallies aren't so required unless you get into 25 man content and you need more than one dedicated tank. We have 1 prot pally in our guild for raids, and 2-3 holy pallies. We have no ret pallies, might want one in the melee dps group for the crit buff but switch out a rogue? feral druid, dps warrior, and enhancement shaman all have their spots. That would cut the number of rogues in the raid to 1. <shrug> can be viable but you would have to show how much dps you do.

For paladins 1 best is Protection. Very good spec. Should use 1h and shield though for that spec. The Spec depends on what you wanna do you with your pally. Wanna use 1h or 2h, more dps, tank, or healer.

I don't understand why everybody is discussing about how much retri paladins suck/don't suck. This thread was made to help a person decide what spec should he/she go on his/her paladin. Please stop arguing on such stupid things, after all it's just a game. Just to make things clear, each spec is as good as the other one!! There is no best spec, it all depends on how you want to play your paladin.

I am a pally and I've experimented with each spec.

So, you should chose protection if you like to tank. Protection is a very fun spec if you have nice gear and you know how to play. It only gets boring if you play it too much. Even though I think that paladins and warriors are equal in tanking, most guilds wouldn't let a paladin be MT (even though I know some raiding guilds with a paladin as MT, but they have very good gear and are very skilled). Protadins tank with holy damage, so that means you will need good spell damage and mana + you need to be resistant so you'll need nice hp, defence, block/dodge/parry chance. You should use a shield and a 1 handed weapon. Just to tell you there isn't many tanking gear with spell damage on (only tiers + a couple of other items that drop I don't know where, even though there are some boots in BT...).

If you like dps you should go retribution (there are other builds for dps but I don't really know them well). Retribution requires very good gear + skill in order to dps well. Retribution is also fun but it's very very hard to get the right gear to be a good dpser in PvE. It's true that you can outdps mages as retri but as I said you need great gear and skills. For retri I think you will need quite a lot of different stats, spell damage, crit chance, attack power, intelect, strength, spell crit rating. You should use 2 handed weapons for retri. Retri gear that drops is rare too, so you should go for arena/tier/BG items.

Ok, now holy. I personally hate healing. I find it boring like hell. But as holy you have great chances of entering a raiding guild as healers are needed in many raiding guilds. I have no idea if it's fun or not but I know some people that enjoy it... You can find holy gear everywhere (ok not everywhere, but it's easy to find and most instances/raid instances have AT LEAST 1 little plate item with + healing, mana, spell crit rating and whatever a holy paladin needs to be happy, lol)

You need to know that all specs are gear dependent, and with crappy gear you won't get anything done.

Well i do not agree with anyone that says ret pallys cannot dps they can iv seen them and i am one i have not raided any where big only kara but i do stay around first in dps i usually finish second right behind a mage but here is a tip to all the ret pallys out there that are looking to raid and keep there dps up first spec into seal of crusader so you get the 6% crit increase and always put that on the mob you are attacking then put seal of command on but do not judge the target untill AFTER crusader strike this way you have a chance of getting a normal attack a proc hit and your crusader strike hit then right after u use your crusader strike judge the enemy and repeat this and you will find your self up ther in the dps also if there is more than one pally in the raid make sure u have salvation so you dont aggro

they can out dps if they use cooldowns ...rogues and hunters have best dps even whitout cooldowns making them best dpsers
paladins=holy and maybe prot if ur skilled and very good geared

I have a 70 Holy Paladin.

I have played over seven different Paladin specs.

I leveled as Retribution, got through Outlands as Protection, and respec'd to Holy at 70... ONLY because the guild had no healers other than a 62 Shadow Priest (which isn't a healer anyway!).

Every spec has it's good points, and it's bad points.

As Ret, I did a little less DPS than the average equally geared warrior.

As Prot, I stacked spelldamage (enchants too, mind you) and held aggro far better than an equally geared Warrior (also counting the ranged "threat grabber") and +90% Threat from Righteous Fury is hard to beat! I cranked out 260+ DPS with Consecrate alone, so add in normal weapon damage, retribution aura, blessing of sanctuary (NOT BLESSING OF KINGS! 10% Stat doesn't add up to what BoSanctuary is capable of with decent spelldamage)

Holy... is Holy... you spam Flash of Light... that's about it... But, you get groups 10x easier than Ret and at least 2x easier than Prot.

improved judgement of the crusader applies to all attacks made on the judged target, the entire raid would benefit from a 3% crit boost, not to mention keeping the judgements of any other pallies active.

lol kite how? if the ret pally knows what he's doing, mages are easily squished, blessing of freedom, and the bubble of course, judgement of justice kills blazing speed if ur fire spec

im a ret pally but use a 1h sword and shield like a prot pally, i tank in dungeons/raids and i think i do well.

i chose ret becuz of retributuion aura(hits the enemy if they hit you).

never ever go healing pally u get just as much a place in a raid wiv a ret pally and also we dont wanna do priests out of basically the only thing can do.


healing is boring, i mean u cant even watch others having fun killing the beasts you have to watch there health bars falling.

Why are you asking in raid anyway? and i think you should go holy dude. The best healing is all you need. I am Ret and mainly holy, but i use holy better.
I was fighting lvl 60 at lvl 20 and i healed so much that i killed 10% of his health...... so go holy and embrace the light yall.
