I find it to be quite successful. I spend a weekend farming ghost mushrooms, and came out if it with roughly 250 gold, not counting the various rare and legendary drops from the enemies in the area. The only problem is that they have very few spawn points, and they only give one herb per pick. But this is why they sell for such a high price.
You can start farming them at around level 45 or 46.
This is highly dependent on your server economy.
250g worth of Ghost Mushroom would be roughly 100 shrooms on our server.
100 shrooms which you could never move in that timeframe because if you sell 5 a day then you've had a very good day. And what value does unmovable stock have :(
There's good money to be made rigging the markets for goldthorn and wild steelbloom and such, doing some creative auctioning. But you certainly don't need herbalism to do that.
Anyway like I said, things could look very very differently on your server.
In answer to your question - yes herbalism is profitable.
You wont start making decent money until you are able to farm the upper herbs like Terocones, Netherbloom, and Nightmare Vine.
All 3 of those go for a nice price. You just need to keep tabs on your AH to see what herbs go for. On your server, there may be other herbs that sell for a high price (i.e. fel lotus and mana thistle, however, they are harder to farm on a regular basis) But generally, those 3 alone will make some decent gold and are relatively easy to get. So hang in there and get your skill maxed out =)
Sure that's true, you can grab some nice high level herbs.. you can fly around the spawning spots and pick what you find, or you can pick in the high level instances when the last boss is down. But still even if you farm a good crop, you'll still have a hard time moving your merchandise at a consistent speed while retaining a decent profit.
Sure, you can create potions and end up with a product that is worth less than the materials you used to make it, and try to move that. You could even get lucky and get one for free depending on your alchemy mastery.
But at the end of the day, chances are you'll have put a lot of time and effort into a profession that could have been better spent doing something else. After all, Blizzard has handed Alchemy it's coat and sent it halfway out the door already and herbalists are doomed to feel the effect of this.
Anyway, on the bright side at least it's not as boring and tedious as fishing, and you'll always make some amount of profit, however little. Plus, people are always grateful when you give them some potions you made from your herb stock, and you could be making a big difference in your group. And let's not forget the direct benefits of herbalism itself, such as the buff you get from Dreaming Glory. That really is fantastic!
which is better for making wuick money
Skinning
Mining
Herbalism
For quick money i'd say skinning cuz you can get leather faster than anything else.
legendary drops o.O? i think not...
Yea those herbs r usually high priced.
i dont know how but mana thisle is extremely cheap on my server.
Nightmare Vine is the most expensive herb on my server and it's reletively easy to get. i found quite a few places around the black temple in the BE and orc areas. Also found some in the netherwing place, beside the scryers flight path.
If u find anymore good places, can u plz tell me? thx
Same thing for teracone. I can never find any =P
I just got Herbalism(got to 123) today and when i went to the AH to sell the herbs i got I found that Briarthorn was like 6 gold a stack and swiftthistly almost 7 gold. however all the other low lv herbs arent even worth a gold a stack
For the most part, what u said was pretty good, other than the "each pick only drops one" part, i completely agree with u
