would it be possible for shamans to off-tank? not in high-end instances of course... but you know... heroics?
think about it...
1. talent tree would obviously be enhancement
They have great parts in enhancement which can help them tank. Some of these are Shield Specialization (Increases block chance by 5% and block amount by 25%), Guardian Totems (possibly to help with damage reduction due to low armor; Increases the amount of damage reduced by Stoneskin and Windwall Totem by 20% and reduces cooldown of Grounding Totem by 2 sec), Thundering Strkies (increases chance to crit by 5% for good DPS), Anticipation (increase dodge chance by 5%), Flurry (increases attack speed by 50% for the next 3 swings after a crit, and w/ Windfury can be very good way to pack up quick agro), Toughness (increases armor value by 10%, less dmg taken), etc. The only thing I would not suggest getting is the tree off of Spirit Weapons because you aren't going to be dualwielding and you cause 15% less agro.
2. they can use shields, which can help them make up for the loss of armor for using mail armor (which is not the worst armor ever). Getting a good shield w/ spell dmg/ defnese rating would be the biggest priorty, as it helps you out the most w/ armor.
3. They have great melee DPS and some shock spells create a lot of agro. U will only be using a 1h, so you will rely a ot on shocks and occasionally totems.
4. they can off-heal if they need to
If the MT's healers wipe or go OOM, he/she can heal quick.
5. Mail armor is ok... not the best, you would need something to make up for the bad armor (i.e. shield, dodge rating, stamina, etc.)
6. you could go three ways with the attribute build; full on stamina, full on agility, or a hybrid of both
Full on stamina would really be hard work for your healers, as you would not be dodging a lot and taking a lot of damage due to low armor. However, if done right, you can have a massive amount of health to spare.
Full on Agility would be gambling because your healers would need to quick heal because once you are hit, it knocks your health down a lot (even with the + armor). If done right, you can have a great dodge rating and get frequent crits to hold agro.
A hybrid IMO would be the best choice because you get a mix of both attributes... which all Prot Warriors use.
7. Solving the Armor Problem
In order to make up for their horrible armor, they are gonna need some great enchants (+3% agro to gloves, agi/stam/defense rating to armor, etc.)
Agility might help build more armor, but it would not make a huge difference to get all the enchants. Dodge chance would go up though, which would take out a lot of worry for the healers if the % is high enough. Attack Power would help your base DPS which will help you with agro. All in all, agility is must IMO.
Stam would also make the damage inversely proportional, whereas it may do a high #, but a less % of your health.
7. STILL ONLY AN IDEA- Lightning shield spam? It would make you oom fast, and I am not sure if they agro much (have not tested yet), but say if it did agro, would it be worth it when all other things are not needing to be clicked (totems, shocks, etc.)
If anybody has any ideas or suggestions, feel free to say it. I know I might get flamed, but I dont mind as this helps me learn more. But honestly, if you flame, put some good points in it.
I will do more research later, and have an analysis up in a week or so hopefully.
Sincerely,
