This is a re-post by Landao that I think is one of the best I've seen for helping decide which direction to take when a leatherwork gets to this decision point.

Specializations and trainers

Elemental Leatherworking:

Suitable for leather-wearing melee, e.g., Rogues or Feral Druids.

  Trainer / Quest Giver:

  - Must be lvl 40; Must have 225 Leatherworking skill. Bring 2 Heart of Fire, 2 Globe of Water, 2 Core of Earth, and 2 Breath of Wind to:

  * Alliance - Sarah Tanner in Tanner Camp, Searing Gorge [63, 75]
  * Horde -  Brumn Winterhoof in the Arathi Highlands

Dragonscale Leatherworking:

Mail armor, as such is most useful to Shamans and Hunters.

  Trainer / Quest Giver:

  - Must be lvl 40; Must have 225 Leatherworking skill. Bring 2 Tough Scorpid Breastplates, 2 Tough Scorpid Gloves, and 10 Worn Dragonscales to:

  * Alliance - Peter Galen in Ruins of Eldarath, Azshara [37, 65]
  * Horde - Thorkaf Dragoneye in the Badlands

Tribal Leatherworking:

Leather caster-based gear, most useful for Balance and Restoration Druids.

1 - Quest prerequisite ( Wild Leatherworking from Pratt McGrubben)

  * Alliance -  Pratt McGrubben in Feathermoon Stronghold, Feralas (right behind the flight master)
  * Horde - Jangdor Swiftstrider in Feralas

  2- Tribal Leatherworking

    - Must be lvl 40; Must have 225 Leatherworking skill. Bring a Wild Leather Vest and a Wild Leather Helmet to

  * Allaince -    Caryssia Moonhunter in Thalanaar, Feralas [89, 46]
  * Horde -  Se'Jib in Stranglethorn Vale [36, 34]

I appreciate the information. Any idea which ones sell better on AH. I understand that each server is different (i.e. PvP) but a general idea would be nice. Thanx

It doesn't matter. The specialization lets you learn blue and purple recipes which make bind on pickup items, so only take a specialization if you plan on wearing the stuff.

I read this and wonder how true is it?
If thats the case then would it even be worth it all to even take up one of the specializations?

I mean you wouldnt be able to make any money unless your going to sell the items to Vendor or be able to help, as I do sometimes, by doing things for other guild memebers.

I mean if they are BoP it would, unless like she said..something your really gonna wear...would be pointless.

they are mainly BoP but some are not... i have bought two recipes from the dragonscale lw that are BoE and do not have to be a dragonscale leatherworker to make or wear.  Is it the same for elemental or tribal?

Okay...yeah.

I got two tribal ones in Feralas (sp?) and they were BoE.
Though looking through the rest of the list they were all BoP.

That is probably what I will do. Just get the BoE ones and just stick to regular leather working. Because even the two Tribal ones were grey once I learned them. So they are two low of a level for my 56 hunter.

Ill probably just stick to the regular leather working.
Better gold and more times Im able to help out other guild memebers and their gear.

Before BC came out, all the specialty patterns were BOE. So all of the dragonscale gear at that time was BOE but you had to be a dragonscale LW to make it. After BC, they changed it. You can still buy a few of the old recipes from the dragonscale trainer, such as the blue dragonscale gloves or whatnot, but any leatherworker can buy them. There are newer recipes that are BOP and you have to have dragonscale LW to make them, such as the dragonstrike leggings. The BOP items are pretty good (I wore the dragonstrike leggings from 45 until I got to Outlands) and there is great purple gear for lvl 70. But all of the BOE patterns should be available to anyone now. My dragonscale LW knows stormshroud leggings and frostsaber leggings, which were originally elemental and tribal patterns.

I'm an elemental spec shaman and originally had chosen "elemental leatherworking." I chose it only because my spec was "elemental" and the profession was titled "elemental." Wrong choice.  For any mail-wearing caster, Dragonscale Leatherworking is the choice for you.  All of the 3 leatherworking specs will enable you to make special armors that only YOU can wear.  If you make the wrong choice, you can switch, but be sure the second time because you can only switch ONCE...after that you're stuck with the ability to make epic BOP items you have no need for.
