so every ware i turn to for advice about professions, and no matter what proff i ask about, it's always the same MO: Mat Proffs make money and the crafting proffs r mostly just for u and friends, or maybe not worth it at all. Immediatly i see two disturbing problems. If ur just selling ur mats away to make money, u have little for your crafting and u find urself farming just to Lvl ur skill, and im srry, im not paying 15 bucks a month TO WORK!!! And if we're going all mats, who the hell is buying all this crap? Is the market system really as screwed up as it appears, or is there some silver lining im not seeing?

P.S. I decided to go Herbs/Alch, so if anyone has specific tips for these, i'd greatly appreciate them...

First of all, im srry this posted twice. Can i delete one w/o messing this one up?

Anyway, thnk u for the sugg. but that's not really relevant. I'm discussing the freak imbalance of supply vs demand that has been kill switched in WoW. Now, i'm sure there r plenty of business terms for wat im talking about, but i dont know any. So, i'll use an example i learned simply from growing up in crappy neighborhoods: drug dealing.

I AM NOT ABOUT TO ADVOCATE USING DRUGS OR GIVE ADVICE FOR DEALING
This is simply how the real world works kiddies.

RL: Suppliers and dealers. Very comparable to mats and crafts no? Good stay with me.

Suppliers find a source, usually passed down thru 3 or 4 other sources, and find an area to push their material. Dealers work directly with the buyers, and buy large quantities of the substance to package and sling to users. Now while the supplier is not with out danger, he rarely has to deal directly with competitors like the dealer (who may need to be well armed) and can make a much easier profit than the dealer becus he sells in larger quantities. So (pay attention here) the dealers often try to find a source and become suppliers to stay off the streets. As if the economy wasn't bad enuf becus of drugs, now there is a surplus of ppl with direct control of the product, trying to peddle it for less than everyone else. So wat do they do? They cut it.

I'll stop here cuz the analogy gets less in line with my topic.

You see wat happens tho? Surplus of Material proffesions = too mach supply and not enuf demand. Now while we can't cut our material, the prices go askew. Can't sell b/c too many ppl changed to gathering proffesions so even if u manage to sell it's prolly for a ridiculously low price that was hardly worth the effort.

Im taking Endgame here ppl. This DOES happen to servers and creates rerolls and server hops.

So...what do we do?

sure, gathering proffesions a great for making money (sometimes) but the really big money lies in the making skills. i have a leatherworker, who earns great money, but NOT on selling the leather she skins, (she's a LW/skinner), but by making it into items, that way i earn great money, AND farm some levels, and the good thing about that is that i can always make my own armor if i want, because im a hunter, and the armor i need is leather/mail.

choosing between gathering/making proffesions is simply about gathering ingredients for your making prof.

I leveled my main with skinning/leatherworking.  What I made to level my crafting I either DE'd (with an alt) or sold on the AH.  I never saw the professions as a primary way to make money though, as I much preferred running instances (could make 25-30g per BFD run, which my druid could easily solo in an hour and fifteen minutes or so by level 37.  Wailing Caverns took about 2 hours, but would net 40g or so.)

You asked though about the supply/demand issue, but for most servers this is moot.  High level chars often drop their gathering profs or change crafting profs at end game, and powerlevel something new by buying all the mats.  High level crafters are also asked to make lower end items and it is just more convienient to purchase these than to go farm them.  (A guildie wanted a deviate scale belt from me recently, for instance.)  Many mats are needed in multiple profs - so that a blacksmith or tailor needs leather for some recipes.  Tailors and enchanters need pots for other recipes.

On any given day I might have a dozen things expire on the auction house, but it is almost never crafting mats.  When gear items come back, I just de them and sell those mats - because there are more people needing enchanting mats than there are enchanters to provide them.

High end crafters normally find steady work.  My alchemist makes raid pots three days a week to sell on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturdays (the most popular raid nights).  My leatherworker turns out leatherworking and mining bags at a profit of 25g per bag even if I buy the mats.  A few times a month (as my supply of primal nether permits) I advertise my epic recipes, which though they take more mats, will often make me between 500-1500g.  Everytime my alchemist's cooldown is ready I make primal might for my leatherworker to turn into riding crops - which I put on the market only when there are not any others on.  Or if there are several on, I'll just sell the primal might.  Easy money since all but the primal earths (I don't have a high level miner) is easy for me to get.  Primal earth is cheap.

My husband makes 2-300g a week selling raid food, even though guild donations seriously 'bite' into his profits.

There is a plethora of ways to make money in end-game... even if you don't craft or farm at all, you could make 100-200g a day doing ten daily quests (depending on which 10 you do).

Blizzard made end-game money making easy - which is good since we all need 5k gold for our epic flyers :)
