I am new to the fishing skill and when i try to fish i never catch anything. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips.

Your skill is not high enough for the area that your are trying to fish in. Try adding lure to your fishing pole. That will increase your skill level temporarily. Or you may need to go to a lower level area. I'm not sure if you are horde or alliance, but if you were a human you would want to fish in Elwynn Forest or in the canals in Stormwind City to get your skill up.
Jam is right. The area may be too high for you. The lures can be purchased from either trade or general goods vendor (I can't remember which one sells them off the top of my head) or a fishing vendor. The first one is usually "Nightcrawlers." Right click on the nightcrawlers after you buy them, then left click on your fishing pole.

The best way to learn fishing is to do it for a couple hours by a trainer in a city. It will probably take less time than that but plan for the longer time so you aren't rushed. The level in he city is easy. Place the first lure on and as you get better use the better lures. pick up the cooking recipes and some flint and tinder to level your cooking at the same time. I recomend waiting to about 100 before leaving the city and going to slightly higher areas. Try fishing anytime you are waiting for a boat. You can sometimes get a few in while on the boat just before it leaves. It takes a lot of patience.
The best way to level fishing i have found is to fish while waiting for the battlegrounds.
Most people dont realise that in order to level fishing, it doesn't matter where you fish. Forget location, as you go up in level it takes more and more successful catches of fish in order to gain another point. So if you're not trying to fish for anything in particular, you can level your fishing all the way to 375 by fishing brilliant smallfish out of the starting area waterways!!
That is why you will see a lot of different toons with levels all the way to 70 fishing just outside of the Hall of the Brave in The valley of Honor in Orgrimar(the most convenient fishing spot next to a battlegrounds entry point).
So in short wait until your 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69 which are the best levls to pvp and in your boring downtime waiting for the next battle to begin, fish your little heart out. OR you can waste precious leveling time fishing as the opportunity arrises while questing.
Just a quick correction on my previous post.
After reaching level 225 fishing then a quest needs to be completed in order to level higher.
The quest can be picked up from Nat Pagle in Dustwallow Marsh (58,60) requirements: level 35 and fishing 225. This will take you to 300, and then u need to head to Zangarmarsh and purchase Master Fishing from Juno Dufrain at the Cenarion Refuge.

Firstly, are you using it properly? are you casting? are you waiting for the bobber to 'duck' under the water before you click on it? I know this may sound condescending but it happens.
secondly, provided you are doing these things correctly, I needs to ask wether you are getting a 'your skill is not high enough' message? if so, go somewhere else. the best place to start is inside your factions main city. you can fish in all of the major cities now, and can actuall level all the way to 375 right there if you really want to.
all good points and just a note... you cannot fish inside the exodar by the trainer. you need to go outside. there is a lake just south of there or even the shore just to the west that are perfect for a relaxing period of fishing. bring some lures. i have found that you need at least two in the very beginning in the starting areas (cities). you can fish all the way up to the 150 level cap in a couple of solid hours before you have to go to booty bay (or the auction house) to buy the book that allows for the next level.
and this might be obvious, but don't forget to keep an eye on your skill level and train when your skill gets to the cap level 75 because you won't be able to level up anymore until you do. i have forgotten about this on three characters and wondered why in over 10 catches and at such a low skill level my skill wasn't moving at all. >:O
the first lure is the shiny bauble (+25). it can be used by anyone with the fishing skill. the nightcrawlers (+50) can be used only after you reach a fishing skill of 50. bright baubles (+75) and the aquadynamic fish attractor (+100) can be used with a fishing skill of 100.

I just started too - all you need is a fishing pole and a lure. drag your fishing icon out of your spellbook onto your hot bar and go to some water. click the fishpole icon on the hotbar to fish, hover your mouse over the bobber in the water and as soon as it moves,click! sometimes you catch and sometimes they get away. keep going in any low level area until you get to level75 and then you can get trained. good luck!
Use the baubles or aquadynamic fish finders or night crawlers. Cast them on the rods. Remember fish the floating debris or boxes in the water around ports to catch some interesting stuff.
if you're fishing and you're horde:
the easiest place to do it is in org, right next to the fishing trainer. There is even a fishing supplies guy if you dont have a pole or run out of lures. you just stand next to the body of water(while all the fat taurens run through your line..)and click of the bobble when it splashes. see above posts for how. I got my fishing up to 60 within 30 minutes there... after that, you can move or just sit until it starts to take more than one cast to gain a point.
try fishing naked if you get bored lol, its always a good way to make it interesting (and its not like you run out of bag space ;) )
Thanks to YinYangman. I didn't know I had to click on the bob -- I wasted fifteen minutes tossing the line in the water with no results. ONce I read his post I got my first fish on my next cast.
So if you are fishing without result it's because you aren't right clicking on the bob when you see a little splash.
I caught my first fish outside of Silvermoon and I'm a 41 Blood Elf Hunter.
