is there ANY application to smithing by the end game?  I mean... as far as as i understand.... anything you can make.... isnt as good as your high level instance drops or pvp gear. i suppose you can make mithril spurs, shield spikes, and counter weights.... but i think enchanting has more desirable things for shields boots and weps.  so... if i am looking to invest into smithing... will it benefit me in the end?

Funny, I am about to create another toon with enchanting so he can help me with my weapons - 64 arms warrior, but I do agree there seems to be quite a difference between what we can craft and what we can pick up from drops.  It would be nice if Blizz decreased that gap.

I definitely agree with the above poster.  It's a lot harder to hope and pray for a drop than get a definite item.  If you're not in a guild that's raiding, it's even harder still.  Pugs only go so far.  And then everyone is for themselves and not for the overall betterment of the group.  People constantly post everywhere that "this item sucks", "blacksmithing is crap", "can't make anything good", you know what I mean.  Everything is situational.  Depends on where you are in progression and what you do.My first toon went blacksmithing. And now I'm working furiously on a warrior.  Guess what?  I can now make some pretty decent stuff to keep him going until he gets into a position to raid.  I also find myself the guild blacksmith.  I NEVER do anything for free.  Guildies get a discount for sure, but there is a crafting fee tied to EVERYTHING I make for other people.  Don't work for tips.  Make them give you the cash b4 you give them the finished product.  You never get stiffed that way.  Afterall, you have the mats that the spent hours or days farming for the item.
