Ok so there are 3 things to pick from potions, elixirs and xmutes. Which would be the 'best' to pick? If there are different reasons for each please explain. For instance you may feel one is better for making money while another is better if you are in a hard core raiding guild.

My initial thoughts are xmutes is probably the most profitable as if u get an extra, you effectively have 2 in the time it takes to make 1 (i.e 23hr cooldown for making 1 or in this case 2). The mats seem to be dearer too. As i have herbilism i can collect most mats for pots/elixirs for free, so getting extras is nice but i could just pick a few extra herbs.

Please comment and put me on the right track :-)

Thanks for reading

i could be mistaken but i believe that i have often seen various transmutes going for free or really cheap in trade chat, which would make the profitability of it pretty low.  Im planning to make my alt an alchemist since he is almost level 70 and im having a tough time deciding.  Any raiding player is going to need a consistent supply of flasks or elixirs for advancing content.  At the same time, all players hardcore or casual need potions and they are a highly traded item on any server.  Since my other 70s are not alchemists and i have had to purchase fel lotus before, im wondering if converting easily found herbs to mass potions is profitable enough to overcome turning the rarer herbs into the minimum amount of elixirs, i.e. can i sell enough super manas/heals regularly to be able to afford possibly having a lack of flask mats at times.  Also, are transmutes more profitable than i have seen?

From what ive read all the specializations have a chance to create 1-4 extras of whatever it is you are making.  which means if you gather the mats for a skyfire theres a slight chance of ending up with a few of them.  naturally if you were to luck into 3 or 4 skyfires or earthstorms then you would have gained the equivalent of a dozen stacks of potions in terms of money at the AH.

right now im thinking that potions might be the best choice given that they have a constant high demand on auction and you will always need a few stacks of them, whereas diamonds are an occasional necessity and flasks/elixirs are raid oriented.

when you get to 350 you go to the alchemy trainer in thrallmar.  he will direct you to the person you need to talk to for what ever you what to specialise in.

Specialising into somthing deppends on what YOU want.
in my case i went with  pot mastery cause im a healer and i find my self in need of mana mid fights. i make healing pots for my mage stay alive in BGs and for some guildies like Tanks and other classes that cant heal.

as for Xmuting, thats a money making specialisation if you know how to play the market witch isnt realy that hard haha.
i didnt need the money cause my mage was my money maker :p

as for Elixers i would say thats for seriose raiders that raid every single day or for pvpers that like to have that extra spike to thier damge or HP/Mana. also good for making money but it doesnt beat a 5 proc primal might Xmute.

potion mastery isnt that trust worth when it comes to making cash, some days super mana/healing pots go for 16g a stack other days they go for 5g a stack.

so its all up to what you want the most.
good luck choosing! :)

I went Xmute specialty.  I normally don't "charge" someone but they do normally tip.  I've also gotten a couple of discoveries already.  The first two Primal Might transmutes I did I discovered mana to fire and shadow to water as well as procing an extra Primal Might.  Turned around and sold it in the AH for 75g.  The thing that does suck is the cooldown.

In my opinion the best specialization is all a matter of how much effort you plan on putting into alchemy.

From what I have read all specialties have about a 20% chance to proc multiples.

If you're the type that mostly does daily quests for money, and you don't want to spend a lot of time collecting herbs. Or if you prefer to sell your herbs, then Transmutes is probably best for you. On the plus side it takes the least effort because you will mostly be transmuting for other people who will supply mats. And when it procs it procs big. 1-4 extra primal mights at 75-100g means you can potentially make 400g extra for doing a transmute. On the down side you can only transmute once per day. and you won't proc 5 on transmutes very often. at a 20% proc rate you'll see extra transmutes about once every 5 days, and will probably average 2 extra when you proc. So your profit here is looking like 200g per 5 days.

With potions you'll be spending a lot more time collecting mats, however the amount of extra money you can make is only limited by how many herbs you want to collect. Lets say for example you're a Potion master making Healing pots. On my server a healing pots sells for about 2-3g, and the mats are pretty simple. if we assume the same 20% proc rate you would have to make around 350 potions in 5 days to make about the same profit as transmuting. 70/day is a high number to keep up with, but this is just the first potion I picked off the top of my head without crunching a lot of numbers as to what would turn a better profit. It also doesn't account for if there are any potions which could be sold for a similiar amount to what the mats would cost so that you could just buy a ton from the auction house.

Elixers I would only do once you have discovered a few flasks, however in my opinion this would easily net the most profit. On my server most flasks sell for about 40g each. and if you're online at popular raid times you'll have no problem getting people to give you mats to make flasks. the profit per proc will be about 1/2 what you can get from transmuting, but you can easily do more than twice the flasks to make up the difference if you have the right recipes.

You have to be 68 or higher to specialise.

I picked up quest from honor hold, i choose xmutes, so i had to go to the stormspire in netherstorm, to finish my quest.

Since then i have made 6 primal mights and not got any extra. I did make 2 discoveries, within those 6 xmutes shadow to water and life to earth.

Im the poster above, to say i have been a little disappointed with the xmutes mastery, is massive under-statement....

I have been making mights each day, i got an extra proc on the 8th one, only one though.

I have made another 4 since then, and nothing.

so i have made 12 and got an extra 1..whoop.

I will continue to make one a day and let you know how it goes, considering it cost 4 mights to specilaise it hasnt been a great start.
