i only have 392 defence, but have 11832 amor without improved Devo aura, i know i must increase my defence,

also i only have 211 int but i have 817 stam, i had been led to believe that str was of use to paladins, but now i am working on changing the str to int, and would like some tips on what gear i should get, as well i would like to know what weapon and sheild would best suit me,

Thank you, Thomash , alliance paladin, Thrall

if you ever plan to do endgame content, a minimum of 490 defense is mandatory...

also, as a prot pally, strength isn't super super important to you. it is not your job to dps. it IS your job to keep mobs off of the clothies without dieing. dps is for the dps people, tanking is for tanks.

Just remember 490... but also remember that str increases you block value. That is a good thing. int is not that important. With out mana you cant hold mobs i understand... but when your healed you gain 10% or the heal back in mana. In instances you are getting constant heals. That will bring your mana up. When i OT kara or whatever im doing as prot i rely on being healed. judge wisdom and stack vengeance and you will be fine.

To the above person who said DPS is not your job. Yes that is true but holy damage = threat. That is why i put +40 spell damage on my tanking weapon.

i agree that holy dmg = insta-threat, but i just wanted to stress that you shouldn't favor str over defense rating or parry bonus on gear. alot of prot pallys make the mistake of wearing ret gear, and they never really hold out in a long fight because of it.

Indeed, the 490 defense is mandatory (if you can get it over 505 you and your healer will notice a considerable difference), you are also going to need to stack stam - as the closer you can get to 15-16k hps the better.

The Continuum Blade from CoT rep is a terrific entry-level pally tank wep - and as mentioned, put +40 spl dmg on it.  You are looking to get between 200 and 250 spl dmg (after getting your def/sta up).

5-5.5k mana should be sufficient.  If you find in a particular instance you need more, you can always put blessing of wisdom on yourself instead of kings (since that means you aren't taking enough damage to get sufficient heals, therefore kings isn't all that important).  And of course, judge wisdom on the mob you will be tanking longest and keep a stack or two of mana pots on you.  :)

The prot pally chest for badge rep is incredibly nice (better than the prot warrior version, tbh, and I've seen several prot warriors choose it over the chest designed for them).  Well worth the badges.

On a side note, you should think about starting to build a healing kit as well (from drops your healers do not want).  We often take a warr/pally to ZA - and the prot pally heals on the fights when we do not need two tanks.  Even specced prot he has just over 1600 +heal, lol.  It's awesome to have an OT with that much versatility.

strengh is on very little help to you, someone said that strength helps with block and its true but only just slightly you have to stack alot of strenght make any real differance, you would be better off to stack agility then strenght lol. The other thing you will need is to get you dodge, parry and block numbers up,  with HS up ideally they will be at 102.4% this along with you 490 DEF will make you uncrushable and uncritable. Shoot for about +200 to spell Dam this should give you plenty of threat.

You must know that 490 defense rating is to make you invulnerable to Critcal strikes, and you need 102.4% (Block+Parry+Dodge+Miss) to make you invulnerable to Crushing blows too.

Just a word on weapons - Gladiator's Gavel is great - or Gladiator's Salvation if u want to switch up and heal sometimes.  Just add +40 spell damage and u should have all the threat u need.  Then u can concentrate the rest of your gear on defense.  It's a bit of a grind costing just over 25K Honor but if u do bg's long enough eventually you get hooked up with a preform that runs just about every night.  I went this way so I didn't have to constantly run dungeons(my guild is not a big one for that stuff).  Either weapon is worth it.

you never run instances? but that's what tanks are for...? or were you just saying that you don't like regular dungeons but do raids? weird...

i will freely admit that ever since respeccing to prot, i SUCK at pvp. i was pretty good as ret, but now i just can't do enough damage. it does take about 5 horde to kill me (or 1 caster bastard with a bunch of dots) but i just can't dish it out anymore. maybe i should keep a pvp set of gear lying around.

I have tried to build a good tank paly by grinding BG's for the Galdiator's lamellar set. This set has high resilience, stamina, spell crit, spell dps and decent intell, but the defense stats are not what has been discussed above. How can I buff my defense ratings to 490 and still use this PvP set?

You can't.

PVP is not for Prot pallies...

Go do some 5-mans to get the gear you really need.

Theres no such thing as "tanking" in pvp. The gear ur refering to is for shockadins, not tankadins. The 3 sets of gear u get from arena are:

Lamellar - Shockadin spec
Scaled - Ret spec
Ornamented - Holy spec

With 5/5 glad ur refering too, u will have barely enough items to gear up DEF to do 5 mans. W/o 5 mans, u will not be able to do Heroics or Kara. W/o those 2, mag/gruuls is a no. W/o those 2, ssc/tk is out. W/o those 2, bt n mh is out.. get the point? The best thing u can do IF u have the 5/5 shock gear is to go shock. Collect more SD gear and dps in 5 mans to obtain tanking gear. Either that or keep ur SD gear and collect healing gear. You should still be ok to heal 5 mans with that gear... and would be a lot easier to get into groups.

EDIT - also resilience is for PVP. When u do instances, the mobs u fight are not player controlled... which means its not "pvp" but "pve". Resil will mean crap. That shud be the first thing u notice about pvp gear... lack of +hit/spl hit and the induction of resil.

If you want to tank as pally you need to forget about devotion aura. go with retribution. It will help generate the threat, in addition to the other things you do.

Meh...tried that.  You'll go broke respeccing and you're a total waste if you're still specced Prot :S

my plan is to just bump my rogue or hunter up for PVP if tanking gets boring.

wrong wrong wrong strength is at least a little important it helps in blocking ie less damage taken. but to answer your question , for lower level items anything of the eagle is what you want it raises your stam & int , for higher levels anything of the elder does the same thing

This site will tell you all that you need to know on paladin tanking:

http://www.wowhead.com/?forums&topic=3176

490 defense to be uncritable
102.4% avoidance to be uncrush(parry/dodge block

Use all 12 stamina gems... unless you need to get a good gem bonus.. such as +3 stamina or something...  then use 6 stam and 6 defense  gems...  you only lose out on a bit of stam .. and gain a bunch of avoidance.

all enchants stamina/fort/ or defense rating if you arent uncrushable..  except the weapon...  you need a caster sword/mace with +40 spell damage enchant on it.

Forget getting intellect...spiritual attunement is all you need.
