Everyone seems to be outlands happy here. What about the folks that are still in azeroth?
I have a 60 mage and I have a lot of experience in azeroth with herbs.
You won't make any money whatsoever until you get to level 70(herbalism) where you could farm foe abit for briarthorn and maybe a little for stranglekelp out in the seas. That'll get you started, but by no means will make you rich. Keep farming those two until you get to 115, especially the briarthorn because you can also get sweifthistle with that. A pretty good money maker in recent months, but in order to keep leveling, you have to concentrate on the stranglekelp so you can get to 115. Once you get to 115, the big money starts to fall for you. If you can get wild steelbloom(hard to find) you have yourself a nice herb that sells quite high, but it's pretty rare. STV would probably be your best bet. At 120 only 5 levels later, you need to do one thing and one thing only: for the next 55 points, I highly suggust, horde or alliance to stick your ass in the in the ravenhill cemetary and gather nothing but grave moss. Do not stop until you get to 175. That is a highly sought after herb and is 1 of 2 componants that make up some of the most sought after potions certainly early in the game. Most servers will have it available anywhere from 75s to 1g per on average. So, do not stop for 55 levels. Very tedious but it will pay you huge dividends in the end. The only problenm with that and it's a huge one is having to constantly be on the lookout from the undead on steroids known as mor'ladim. Always be on the lookout. He attacks hard and fast with a nasty blade that in a later quest could be yours.
After you are done with that, a whole world opens up for you. you have goldthorn available to you, kingsblood, liferoot( great for healing potions, bit not big on making gold) goldthorn is also available and sells very good, all these became available while you were gathering the GM. The one I didn't mention is your next assignment. Head out to either arathi highlands or stv if you are a high enough level and get yourself some fadeleaf. I mentioned earlier that GM is one of two that make up some of the most sought after potions in the game. The other is fadeleaf. Fadeleaf is a little easier to get than GM and for that reason even though it's a higher level herb, usually it will go at or skightly higher than the price of GM. You will have had it for 15 levels by then, but you want to get as much grave moss as possible because fadeleaf is so much more abunadant and people tend to put the two together as a package deal. they are the shadow herbs, both attack and rersistance My recomadation is stay in that until you get to green for fadeleaf, probably 25 levels. By then you will have at least as much as grave moss. Do not sell them separately. By that I mean wait until you have both of them, that way you can maximize your ptofit. So in actuality, you really won't make any money intil 185. it will be worth it my friend because you will suddenly have probably close to an instant 300g-500g in you pocket to go along with all the greens you picked up along the way. so by the time you reach 185 you are on pace for you're mount and and quite easily for that matter. Now you are in with the big boys. At 185 khadgars whisker opens up to you, again in arathi and stv. also if you can make it to alterac ruins wintersbite might be good for you, but there is not a whole lot of supply and demand for that. so during this time I would recomend goldthorn and khadsar;s whisker. even though wild steelbloom is still a good choice. By then you might find some of them either in the WL or probably more so in arathi. If you noticed, there seems to be a common theme here: arathi highlands and STV.
I think for the money, Arathi highlands is the best in the game(STV is just way to big a provence and things are much closer together at arathi, and it's directly north of the WL with far easier access, unless your the horde
At 205 if you can handle the badlands and uldaman then you are in good shape to pick up  few fireblooms. Great for fire magic. As you go deeper into stv.
you will fing purple lotus usually in the troll areas. that is not in real high demand but if you don't get at least 2g per you've been taken to the cleaners. That should take you to 210. 'Now you need to be ready for un'goro and felwood because all the remaining herbs are out there, so you better be level up experience wise appropriately or you can forget it for a while. Either way if you follow exactly what I said, there is no reason you should not have mount money by the time you get to level 60. By the time you get to the bottom 4, you better start getting ready for outlands because they are all 300+ herbs. the first one is the hardest one to get of all of azeroth. Ghost mushroom. You should have pretty good success with these things in the caves of the troll temples in the hinterlands. There a not a whole lot of them but then again we are now talking 5g a pop or  more . You'll, find gromsblood in more deserted kinds of lands like tanaris or the blasted lands where the dark portal is. since you don't get it until 250, I would ride it out there until you get to 300 . Before that, as far as herbalism goes. un'goro crater is arguably the best place in all of azeroth for getting some really awesome hard to find herbs. The other would be felwood. It's not unreasonable to say you can make over 100g just for being there. Mountain silversage over in the hills in un'goro are very expensive. probably 3g per.I would stay there until you hit 285 , then come out to the blasted lands and pick up you gromsbloood in the blasted lands. They also have a little of that at un'goro also, so you may run into some there, but they are pretty rare there. Finally, if you really want to make some real quick money, head up north to winterspring and get yourself some icecaps. They are rare and people will pay big money for thise suckers. espeicially frost mages. Once you are at level 58, then follow the advice of everyone else in here. trust me, it's great advice. the herbs out there make the ones in azeroth look like pennies on the dollar. But if you follow this strategy with just herbalism alone, nevermind alchemy, you will have funded your epic mount for the outlands.
Just so you know, I have 300 level herbalists. One with alchemy, the other with tailoring, so I know exactly where to go. So to answer everyone's question: there is tons of gold to be made from the herbalism profession skill, but like all the other professions, it is very timeconsuming. My level 60 mage was a 234 enchanter until 2 days ago. I am now at 176 and am about to turn in 68 grave moss good for probably 75g at least. and that is only after 2 days with the skill. It actually would be more, but I took a while after I maxed out at 150 before I had to teleport back to UC to retrain for expert status. It is all going in the AH tomorrow since this is early tuesday morning and I will lose 8 hours of AH time. I will keep you posted. It really helps when the mobs don't attack. Even mor'ladim ran away from me once, lol.
