Amazing shield, same as the one from Nightbane in AC but with dodge so i prefer it :D im first to post
Imo, this is the best-looking shield in game. Looking forward to getting it, lot of grinding work however
Theres actually another shield, Sunward Crest, that looks nearly exactly the same (cept its yellow instead of red) and the stats are slighlty different (instead of hit rating and block value, it increases spell hit rating and damage/healing done)

i guess the shield is used for holy pallies or maybe shammies

U lose about 1.3% avoidance rating to the nightbane shield. As a trade off u get 13 expertise. So this shield is really situational to which area u need to improve on.

this shield doesn't have any expertise on it
This shield gives absolutely no expertise.
I just hit exalted today, and I bought this. Awesome looks, great shield all round. It and the other stuff are worth the grind to exalted. Rep is pretty easy to get if you do ALL the Shattered Sun dailies every day.
is it good for prot pala? i'm just starting prot pala wanna know :)
There is a Paladin version of it, Sunward Crest. Its pretty good for pallys I think.

they r both pally tank shields, the sunward crest is for fighting trash mobs and the dawnforged defender is for fighting bosses
This is a Prot-Warrior shield, as the Sunward Crest is for Prot-pallies :)
I play a prot Paladin and I can see this as a viable tanking shield. Tankadins get most of their +spell damage from their weapon. Plus; this shield offers many of the defensive stats that a tankadin can make use of if they have the spell damage that they need. Because of enchants and items, a weapon will be generating a very healthy amount of threat. If you are a prot paladin that needs the extra threat, pick up the Sunward crest. Hope this helps.
I must respectfully disagree with Havoclegion's implication that this shield is better for a tankadin than the Sunward Crest. Particularly if the Tankadin is in blues and trying to gear up to the point of being able to handle Raid bosses.
This shield gives the wielder +18 Dodge Rating. The Sunward crest gives the wielder +18 Block Rating.
18 Dodge Rating increases your combined avoidance (the chance for a miss, dodge, parry, or block when attacked) by 0.95%.
18 Block Rating increases your combined avoidance by 2.28%.
For a paladin tank to reliably negate Crushing Blows, his combined missed+dodge+parry+block chance must total at least 102.4% with only Holy Shield up. The 2.28% contribution to Block chance from the Sunward Crest goes a LOT farther toward making the paladin Uncrushable than the 0.95% contribution to Dodge chance from the Dawnforged Defender.
Yes, the extra +spelldamage bonus from the Sunward Crest isn't strictly NECESSARY if the DPSers in the raid are reasonably careful about their Threat. However, the more +spelldamage a paladin tank has, the more breathing room he gives his DPSers and the more quickly they can whittle down a mob without pulling aggro. Furthermore, while the Dawnforged Defender's Hit Rating bonus means fewer missed Seal of Righteousness procs, the Sunward Crest's Spell Hit bonus means fewer Resisted Judgements of Righteousness. (It also means less of a chance to miss with important situational Judgements, such as Judgement of Justice on a mob that will otherwise run away.)
Now, for a raid-tier-geared paladin who's already at or past the Uncrushable threshold and has more threat generation than he can shake a stick at, the Dawnforged Defender's extra Block Value can mean a lot less damage taken from a fast-hitting boss. However, a paladin geared that well usually has access to shields that are better than this one to begin with!
This, the Dawnforged Defender, is more of a raid/boss tanking shield for pallies whereas the Sunward Crest works better for pallies in the 5-man/PUG/aoe trash areas. They're dirt cheap so get both. The real question should be this or Crest of Sha'tar for (Kara) raiding.

the small thing u forget to put in here is that a pally tank get aggro from getting hit. sooooo if Dawnforged beef up your dodge u make it less offor them to land a blow on you vs Sunward makes it so u can take a hit. yeah with it i take less dmg with the other shield then u know when u aoe tanking the spell and block wins. that and hit rating is nothing to a tank who get aggro from people pounding on them.
The point is
the +block rating gives you just over 2% block, if your trying to reach uncrushable, then it gets you further then then 1% dodge on this shield.
Dodge is superior for boss tanking, since blocks dont prevent much dmg (relatively, from a boss), and your getting enough healing from the dmg that does get through to maintain your mana pool.
if i have my avoidance and defence up enough would it be better to keep my shield, Crest of the Sha'tar because it has more stam?
This shield is the yin to the yang of the Nightbane shield. This shield is great for tanks who already have an overabundance of defense and want to add more direct points into their hit rating and dodge rating. The nightbane shield is much better for tanks who are still gearing up their defense rating and need to maintain that 490 equilibrium.
Either way, throw a +18 to stamina enchant on this shield, or the Nightbane shield, to have a great array of tanking gear with excellent stamina and shield block value.
Also as a side note, the other item for tanks that becomes available at exalted with Shattered Sun Offensive (SSO) is the Pendant of Resolve which gives a rediculous amount of stamina, hit rating, expertise and a great proc for Aldor/Scryer exaltees. So becoming exalted with Aldor/Scryer is just as important as being exalted with SSO.
You will also obtain an invaluable tanking shoulder enchant by becoming exalted with Aldor/Scryer that gives +15 to dodge rating and +10 to defense rating which will help regain any lost defense rating occuring from switching out any defense rooted gear.
Agree with the above post. Personally I have this and NIghtbane's shield (http://thottbot.com/i28606). I find I use this for situations where I need more aggro (or need to build it quickly) and Nightbane's for hard hitting bosses.
Certainly a hunter's weapon!
But sire, that's a shield!
..I SAID HUNTER WEAPON!!!!

Dawnforged Defender is better than the Shield of Impenetrable Darkness and this is why.
Shield of Impenetrable Darkness
4872 Armor
122 Block
+33 Stamina
Equip: Increases defense rating by +22 (9.3)
Equip: Increases the block value of your shield by 33.
Now Dawnforged Defender
4872 Armor
122 Block
+31 Stamina
Equip: Increases your dodge rating by 18 (1.0%).
Equip: Improves hit rating by 13 (0.8%).
Equip: Increases the block value of your shield by 33.
Both shields have the same exact block value and Darkness only has two more stamina than Defender. Now, by the time you are able to get Darkness, you should have 490+ defense rating, or enough to spare so losing 9 won't bring you under 490. So with Defender you gain dodge rating which is very good for avoidance and hit rating is an extremely important tanking ability. So with the shield you get some avoidance and you get a stat that will improve your tps.
No. I just got exalted with SSO and I bought this shield to try it out. In terms of avoidance, I prefer my Shield of Impenetrable Darkness.
Going from Shield of Impenetrable Darkness to Downforged Defender:
Avoidance:
+0.55% dodge
-0.40% parry
-0.60% block chance
-22 hp (tauren tank)
Threat generation:
+0.83% increased chance to hit.
DPS can watch their threat in omen imo. I'll take avoidance. (full epic tank in t5/t4 here).
I totally agree. ppl should make the calculations before. both defense and agility and dodge are good for tanks. the point is how much do you actually benefit from each one so that you know which item you must choose.
that stats above are correct i believe. In order to help to decide how much avoidance you can actually get from block rating I usualy divide it by 4 because the average block value you get from your gear must be around 250-300 and an instance mob hits you frquently for 1000-1200. So every 4 block you actually mitigate the full value of a single swing.
in this case:
Shield of Impenetrable Darkness
defense rating = 22 = 22/2.36 = 9.32 Defense Skill = 0.37% dodge + 0.37% parry + 0.37% being missed + 0.09% (0.37%/4) blocking
which sums up to an aprox total of 1.21% avoiding being hit
Dawnforged Defender:
Increases your dodge rating by 18 <= 1% avoid being hit
So actually you should take more damage using Dawnforged Defender (1%<1.21%) and also you have -2 stamina which is around 22hp which gives u even less life to absorb that damage.
One place where this shield is probably useful is in gruul if you are offtank because since you only get hit ocasionally, the +0.21% mitigation won't have a significant impact. however you must not miss any strike you can get on gruul since you have to be the second on threat list and the DPS is on a timer in order to bring him down before he gets too strong. I would use Dawnforged Defender on gruul and the Shield of Impenetrable Darkness on all around tanking.
there were some simplification made in the process obviously. however since we dont have a simulator this is an educated aproach. you should get this shield if you are not able to defeat nightbane, but if you are, dont mind replacing your shield.
more of a warrior sheild but pallys can use
This shield is the sweetest looking shield in the game..in my opinion. it alone got me back into wow lol , im not even a tank but i just want to wear it so i can look awesome
ITS SOOOO SICK
i just got that shield it rox
Ok, someone please get this straight with me. I'm starting to tank soon and i need to know:
is it DEFENSE that has to be 490, or DEFENSE RATING that has to be 490??
ive heard people say it was just defense, but im not sure if they are just forgetting to type in rating after it
