This strategy is for downing Vexallus on Heroic Difficulty.

Group makeup isn't important, although I found it easy as a Mage, with a Druid healer HoTing me.  Therefore, I'll say the strategy I used with me, as a mage.

First order of business is to have a class that has an instant cast spell with no cooldown.  Hunters normal shot works, Mage's ice lance, etc.  Wanding takes just a bit longer, but can work as well.  But you need a ranged class capable of shooting/hitting a Pure Energy ball quickly.

When Vexallus first summons two Pure Energy adds, the Mage ice lances both immediately, taking the debuff.  Druid healer casts HoTs on the mage.  Other DPS continues on the boss.

Second wave of Pure Energy adds spawns, continue with ice lancing them both.  Hots should be stacked and keeping you up still against the debuff.

Third wave of Pure Energy adds spawns, ice lance both again, then Ice Block.  This removes the debuff, and gives time for the heals to catch up to you, also making you immune to his Overload, since generally the DPS has him low at this point.

After that, pop out of ice block and DPS him down normally.  If there are more adds, you can split the debuff evenly throughout the group, or just pick the debuff up again as the mage, seeing as it has reset itself.

    I hope this helps!

    Drop was:

    Edge of Oppression
    Binds when picked up
    One-Hand - Dagger
    79-148 Damage - Speed 1.30
    (87.3 damage per second)
    +25 Stamina
    Requires Level 70
Equip: Increases haste rating by 17
Equip: Increases attack power by 36

I totally agree about the instant cast spell to burn the adds. Anything that has a casting time, or even ranged shots, will make the add shoot you and you'll get the debuff (bad arcane dot).

If you're having trouble targeting the adds, like me and everyone in my group, you should make a simple macro that reads:

              /target pure energy

Then all you have to do is spam click your macro as soon as you see the yellow message that says "Vexallus starts to draw pure energy".

You can even integrate your instant cast shot in your macro... we had a dps druid and he took care of all the adds by spamming the following macro:

              /target pure energy
              /cast moonfire

      Hope this helps.

I had to do this fight today on heroic with great players but an under geared healer. Our group build was a Paladin tanking, holy priest for heals, and then a rogue, mage, and hunter for damage and crowd control. So what we did was take every advantage of Vexallus's  Health percentage per Pure Energy coming out with the group composition and it worked out well.

We started doing normal damage not having to worry about add speed because at the health levels:

85% -The rogue took the first set of Pure Energies and cloak of shadowed out of it,  the one minute timer on cloak began.

70% -The hunter sent his pet in to take the next set of Pure Energy, we let it DPS until dead afterwards to save heals.

55% -The mage took the next set of Pure Energy activated all his racial, spec, and equipment cool downs and together the entire group tried to burn Vexallus as fast as possible.

40% -The mage took the next set of Pure Energy and ice blocked, immediately the group stopped DPS except for the paladin tank to build threat, we did this for two reasons, primarily we were waiting for the one minute cool down on cloak of shadows to reach its limit, and if possible the priest was to try and fix up the group as best possible. When the rogue asked for it we started DPS again.

25% -The Rogue took the next set of adds, cloaked and we resumed DPS our health being in decent shape by then.

10% -Vexallus began doing an Area of Effect and we burned him as hard as possible finally downing him, however the healer had to let a few of the DPS die to keep the other DPS, tank, and them self up.

Another thing I recommend is to use the macro
      /target pure energy
and then either a /cast spell , /attack , or /petattack macro whichever you can do the fastest, In our situation even one Pure Energy AoE would have wiped us so we required the macro on the people who were soaking the Pure Energies.

Some other things we could have done differently are bandaging on the 40% stop DPS phase.
And also Major Arcane Protection Potion on the 10% AoE phase. 2000-4000 damage absorption divided amongst five people is 10k-20k HP the healer will not have to worry about though you may have to exclude the healer so he can use a mana potion during the fight.

Good luck and Happy Warcrafting :)

This boss is probably the hardest boss in this instance. This is what we did:
Have a Mage (me), Hunter, Rogue, Holy Priest, and a Warrior Tank.

This is what we did, attempt this about 20 times repair with lots of gold and pull out all your stops at the end.

We had the hunter respect his pet for max stam and arcane resist. We sent in the pet first and let him take the adds why the rest of us were on the boss. Once he died the rogue took over and started on the adds and once he got 3-4 adds on him he popped Clock of Shadows and this is where the Mage comes in. I Ice Lanced the adds collected about 4-5 I popped my POM, Trinket and Arcane Power. I was able to crit him for a little over 10,000 due to the Debuff effect and then Ice Block out of the Debuff. This took him down to 5% and i stayed Ice Blocked through the Overload the Boss does that seams to wipe everyone. This time it didn't and we were able to finish him off.

This fight is a huge strat oriented fight and Lots of luck. I know not all groups are going to be compiled this way. We just happened to get lucky. Good Luck

Did this guy on Herioc the other day definately the hardest boss in Herioc MGT only strat that worked for us was assign one person to kill the adds until they spawned to fast then switched all DPS to the boss and hope you don't die to the overload.

Don't forget he's auto attacks are actually arcane (Sort of like how the first boss of Mana-Tombs is all shadow) so resist gear could help, a Druid doesn't really need to be in bearform to Tank, since armor means nothing for this fight, so tell him to just tank it in cat to help with DPS.

I tanked this thing in my Pathaleon/arcane resist gear (205 arcane resist) and was the last one to die three times in a row before I finally dropped group...and this was on regular mode with geared out epic toons.

I told the group to down the adds and then dps (rotating add kills due to the stacking debuff), but around 30% the dps needs to go really slowly so that the debuff is gone and everyone is at full health when he hits 20% and overloads.  They had a hard time doing this.

Remember people, full dps isn't always the right answer to boss fights.  Sometimes you need to worry more about surviving than killing.

To me, this fight is a mixture of Darkweaver Syth from Heroic Sethekk Halls and the Curator.  Know when to dps, when to kill adds, and when to pause to make sure everyone is healed to full.

We just managed to do it on normal and i had to get my arcane resist gear for that. 244 arcane resist i had and to be honest, he could not hurt me at all as the tank. I even had some bit of a aggro problem since i generated so little rage! Big difference from before i put my arcane gear on!

With that resist, the healer could keep us all to full and at the last 17000hp, we could burn him down.

We had a prot warrior(me) in arcane resist gear, 2 hunters, a holy priest and a warlock.

The hunters and lock were on the adds so i just concentrated on keeping the big guy at the same place.

We ended with one casualty because the hunter that had the last add was still debuffed durring the boss AOE. Hope this helped.

I would say that whoever has the damage buff needs to STOP attacking instead of attacking more.... any thoughts?

That idea has merit.  It depends on the classes in your group, and the healer, of course, but if you can convince your group to treat it like a Darkweaver Syth fight of sorts, you could probably pull it off.  I'm not sure which would work better, spreading the debuff out, or stacking it on one person so the healer only has to focus two people.  Being a mage, I've never tried it that way.

It seems like it should work though.  You just want to make sure everyone understands.

We ran into the problem where we would kill him to fast and the pure energy would come out to fast and kill us. The method we  used to beat him was this: I tank him pally healing me very slow dps to 85%, stop dps, warlock takes down pure energy, than goes to drain life. We had our elemental shaman healing the warlock. The hunter sat in back and was danceing or sleeping till 25% where we burned him down. This guy doesnt have much hp. You just have to take ur time.

first off, I've downed this boss in heroic version for 3 times now as a pally healer.

I had the same problem with groups trying to go all out dps.  we wiped consistantly at under 5%...  until we decided to take our time.

the last run, I ran it with me(holy pally), ret pally, prot pally, fire mage and affliction lock.

2 shotted him.  1st try the mage died too fast to the big burst.  2nd time, we had ret pally on the adds first, then bubble the debuff and the mage take the 2nd round, then IB out.

it's pretty smooth doing that way.  But I recommend everyone in the group to have high stam gear.  survivability > dmg in this fight.

and as a pally healer, you have to be on top of your burst healing, and mana control.  you will need pots in this fight.  I personally potted once.  don't hesitate to use holy light.

Two quick comments, having just tanked him on Heroic a couple of times

        (1) Shadow priests are a good choice for taking (one of) the debuffs, because they can drop VE and, with the debuff, end up healing the whole group in the order of 400health/second or more (they can take down the one of the adds each wave with Shadow Word: Death)

        (2) As a druid tank with a paladin healer, I simply hit barkskin / tranquility when he did the Overload, kept the group alive nicely.

Mage uses Ice lance on adds and kills them whenever they appear (seems to be every 15%) we dps the boss until it's at 70%, then dps stops until the debuff goes, whilst the tank (me) keeps on tanking. Once debuff goes  dps starts again to 40%. Once debuff goes, we dps to 10%, then burst dps to take him from 10 to 0 hp.

Been using this tactic the passed 6 runs and it's working fine =)

This is what I found to be the most effective strategy on HEROIC after countless times fighting this guy:

First off this is suppossed to be a long, easy fight. Your going to want to do MINIMUM dps until about 30% when he starts the arcane explosion or whatever its called. The less dps you do the less adds he spawns. What we did is let the tank take him by himself pretty much down to 45% and just threw in a few ranged every now and then. This actually FORCES the adds to spawn one at a time beginning when Vellaxus hits 85%. And you will notice that they spawn ALOT less. Also if you have a warlock in your group have him/her use their voidwalker to take the adds. The voidwalker will absorb the debuff then the warlock can sacrifice him for the bubble then resummon and repeat:-). Also the hunter pet work's nice and the mage/ice block strat as well. But I found the Warlock/VW most useful as no party members take dmg from the debuff and the bubble actually protects the lock a little bit. When Vellaxus is down to about 30% or so he will start an Arcane explosion which does massive dmg to all party members so at this point you really want to max out dps to take him down quick. All in all the fight should last about 7-10 minutes. Keep in mind some groups are able to all out dps the entire time and still take him down, but this strategy is the easiest and most repair friendly;). Anyway I really hope this helps you out so you dont have to wipe ten times on this guy because believe me I know the frustration.

Offhand, I'd have to say that you fail, sir.  This doesn't prevent adds from spawning, they spawn at %s of his life, and the rate depends on how much DPS you do.  The rate.  Not if they spawn.  They will always spawn.

          Pure tank "DPS" is ridiculous.

If your healer is good, there's absolutely no reason to have your dps go and steal the adds, the tank can easily handle the debuff, and the additional damage means you won't lose agro. It stacks up quite nicely, and your healer doesn't have the headache of dealing with dps dying mid-fight. Try it some time, you won't be disappointed!

If the ranged dps stand wedged inside these lamps and kill the adds they do not get the debuff from the adds, mind you overload will still hit you.  But no debuff from adds helps a lot. You should be in range of boss and be able to attack him when u are wedged in the lamps and the wall.

This is pretty easy when you know the trick.
A good thing would be to have 2 ranged DPS to take care of adds. One could do the job, but best with 2.
There are 6 candles inside the room. 3 on each side. 2 of them is right beside Vexallus, 2 is a little longer away from him (Around 30 yards away from him), and the last 2 is very long from him.
Let the ranged DPS stand VERY close to a candle each. Actually have them stand inside the candle. They have to stand between the candle and the wall. They need to be so close they actually allmost get stuck between the wall and the candle. The ranged DPS should NOT MOVE AT ALL during this fight.
When this is done, start pulling Vexallus down to the stairs, otherwise the ranged DPS cant hit him. When adds spawn (at 85%, 70%, 55%, 40%, 25% and 10%), let the ranged DPS kill them (use instant spells as the adds deal 2000 damage every second to the whole party).
If this is done correctly, the debuff from the adds will show for about 1 sec, and then disappear. If this doesnt work, either the ranged DPSs arent standing close enough, or else they properly moved and then this trick wont work.
Turns out for some reason the candles disspells the debuff.

When doing this, the only thing you have to worry about is the tanks health and the Overload. But with a good healer, this is no problem.

        Hope this helps you!!
