whats with blizzard putting spell hit on prot pala gear. we dont need more then 40raiting and thats 1 enchant and talents. like what i wouldnt give for some melee hit for avengers shield or even melee hits. or expertise so i can spec into reckoning and avoid those parries.
but all in all a decent shield if your not deep enough into hyjal for the kaz shield. and its great for waves in hyjal cuz i know i bring 4 shields and they all break by the time we get azga done.

It's spell hit rating. And yes, Protection Paladins can make great use of it. It will significantly boost your aggro on bosses (+3 levels) since your Judgements etc. will have a lesser chance to be resisted.
Also your Taunt relies on spell hit.

Increase your threat a little bit, yes. But the majority of our threat isn't resistible. Consecrate (primary threat source), holy shield, and SoR all have an extremely low chance to be resisted if they are even resistible at all. Judgements make up a minor part of paladin threat.

Fail, been melee hit for a very long time

Depends what you're tanking and how you are tanking. If you are tanking regular crap in heroics and 5-mans, you only need 6% hit and spellhit to be capped (the protection talent lowers it to 3%). This is probably why you don't see much in the way of resists.
When you fight raid bosses, it's a completely different ball game. Just as with all other spellcasters, 16% spellhit is mandatory to max out your chance to generate threat. Whether or not you tank raid bosses determines the need to stack spell hit rating.
If you are still leveling your pally, try this: Tank an orange or red mob, either in the world or in an instance. You will occasionally see ret aura resist, holy shield partially resist, and seal of righteousness partially resist. Spell hit is what helps fix that.
Holy shield is my primary source of threat. In fact, on regular junk I don't even consecrate. The reason is that if I need to stop too frequently to drink, the rest of my party starts complaining about the lack of progress. You might use consecrate all the time for every mob, and if you do the logic is different... but if you just use holy shield and So/JoR it will be enough threat (9 times out of 10) to keep everything stuck on you, and spell hit rating helps keep holy shield and righteousness threat relatively consistent.
In conclusion, pally tank itemization is complex and almost everything that you think might help helps.
Spell Hit vary helpful for a prot pally more so than expertise rating. Remember you don't build aggro with white damage, its all spell damage. A good prot pally may not even need to hit a mob inorder to keep aggro on it. I don't how many times I've been resisted by a mob or bosss that resulted in loosing aggro. The higher raid instances it is very important for DPS to max spell hit or melee hit rating inorder to be effective.
However, Avenger's Shield, Righteous Defense, and Seal procs are all bases on HIT, not spell hit.
I am pretty sure that this may be patched in time. I do not see the logic in game mechanics that protection paladins are intended to go for hit rating AND spell hit rating.

They already patched it to /make/ it this way.
What about for a raiding elemental shammy? Spell hit is one of the most essential stats to us (I have even started sacrifing my spell crit, and I never thought I would have done that!)
I can tell you now that Im going to start grinding sunwell rep to get my hands on this.

You need an almost negliable amount of SPell hit as an Elemental Shaman though. 3% or so, I blieve, factoring in all your talents, although don't quote me on that.
You don't need much as an Elemental Shaman, but having this shield you get like half the spell hit you need (as a draenei you only need 39!) So if you're looking to switch stuff around for better overall effect this would definately be an option.
Although...the block seems kind of a waste then...unless you're in pvp...but whatever...
Actually, having done my homework, elemental shammies have the best bonus to spell hit from talents of all the classes (9% properly specced, extra 1% if draeneri and another 3% from fury totem...13%), so you dont really need much (about 36 according to wikipedia).
I will still probably get this shield, but only because it means I dont have to use my badges to get the mazothoril shield.
Wrong righteous defense, uses melee hit rating.
Thats how pally itemization fail again and again, a pally have all stats involved, int str, melee hit (arguingly spell hit its pretty useless except exorcism and first tick of consecration but still they put it on our gear).
Or Im just wrong and stupid and this isnot supposed to be a pally shield, but a shaman shield...
I hope Blizzard dont expect to make us think its a pally shield.
More probable, the items desiners dont even know how the pally protection work, and they thought we were using spell hit for everything instead of melee hit (which is a comon mistake everybody does at least once)...
Or its a hybrid stupid shield, they wanted to give shaman and pally protect a shield, so they put +block rating +dmg +hit rating
give me a break...geez
still I wont use that shield for bossess, but it could be nice for aoe, or trash mobs with a spike
Yea, Ima definitely get this for my AoE shield, Blizzard just needs to learn more about the class they made and realize we need melee and spell hit. Getting tired of it. Now we won't get another chance til WoTLK.

Is anyone able to provide a link about discussion on spell hit and hit? I would suppose that spell hit will help avenger shield on pulling, as they can be easily missed and causing no threat generation on pull. This shield is nevertheless awesome looking!
No, unfortunately Avenger's Shield uses regular +hit, not spell hit. Spell hit is used by judgement, the first tick of consecrate, and exorcism (situational anyway). Our righteous defense and avenger's shield both use melee hit. Personally, I have a few +hit gems that seem to cover me most of the time. (though I do still get a missed avenger's shield on a pull once in a while, which totally sucks when the DPS starts nuking right away cos they never notice...)
I'm in no way arguing with you but i'd like to see some documentation on that. Being that AS and RD are "spells" it's rough to believe they dont' benefit form spell hit. Do you have any links or anything?
Just trying to be a better pally ^_^
Looks like an a nice PVE replacement for my Elemental Shammy, current using the Gladiators Shield Wall, so the extra damage and hit are nice for me (but its about 1k less in armour).

Is this the best pally tank shield?
Is this the best pally tank shield?
o found it better then the other shield in my case i also have Crest of Sha'tar just for the reasion i get better tanking stats then Dawnforged.
Ps. I think bliz did a great job with this shield. the def between the 2 shields are:
dodge/block= Pally aggro is also Passive so u want to take a few hits.
spell hit/melee hit= well all a pally tank dose is use spell to do most of his agrro pulling
Spell dmg/ block value. ok id u want more block then go with the sha'tar shield cram a few hp gems and your good. to go.
Lol im onyl getting this shielkd becuz : im gettin exalted for my tinket, gettin my necklace, and i can use this in BG for mroe armor n spell damage
A lot of rubbish posts.
This shield is simply outstanding for a new paladin tank! I already have 520 defense. And now comes the hard road to "uncrushable". Shield block rating is what i need. (I won't go to Kara before 102avoidance)
I don't know if the charges from Holy Shield depend on spell hit? Still a good stat to have.
Will also get spell damage. Another nice stat to have.
I guess i'm going to use it for some time!
