Also... get addons - like XPerl for example - that give a visual indicator when pet is unhappy/mad. Small things like that makes life *ALOT* easier as a hunter.

Pet unhappy? Yellow blinking box next to his face. Unobtrusive, yet visually screams ZOMG FEED ME!!!. Red? He's pissed.
