well a caster can't take much damage to begin with. their made to stand back and cast. and yes priest do get better. like any class it takes time to become really good.
I hit lvl 10 yesterday(for some reason lvling my alt is painfully boring).
The only way I survive more than one target at a time is to cast Renew on myself and SW:Pain on everyone else! That way everyone attacking me is taking damage even if my focus is on someone else. I never try to take on more than 1 baddie - but there are those times when you aggro some creature that just happens to be walking by as you Smite-away at your current target...fun times.
It's not impossible to take on multiple mobs, but it can be difficult.
First, make sure you keep a shield on yourself as much as possible. Not only does it protect you from damage, but it keeps your spells from being pushed back which becomes more important the more mobs are hitting you. In fact, I would say that the pushback avoidance is the primary reason for using it. Second, use SW:P on everything that is attacking you. Passive damage is always nice, and you can usually get it off on all the mobs before they actually hit you. Third, stay away from channeled and long casting spells, avoid Mind Flay and Holy Fire. Mind Flay is acceptable if you're sure your shield will hold, but otherwise, it will tend to just waste mana. Holy Fire is great DPM, but it is not good DPS, and since killing mobs quickly is important here, it should seldom be used when taking on multiple mobs, even if you're sure your shield will hold. Fourth, SW:D is your friend. Figure out what you can safely hit for, and always use SW:D to finish off a mob when they get below that so you can move to the next one as quickly as possible. The sooner you finish off mobs, the less you get hit, the longer your shield lasts, the less your spells get pushed back. Fifth, try to heal premptively with renew so you just use a single GCD and avoid pushbacks. If you really need a big heal, try to time it for right after you refresh your shield so you can get off a max rank Greater Heal. Sixth, be ready to use your Shadowfiend if necessary to tank something for a bit. Usually, you'll know you've got multiple mobs before they start hitting you, so quickly send your Shadowfiend after one of the ones you haven't hit yet and then nuke the one you already started on. Unless it dies (which seldom happens on non-elites), it should buy you about 15 seconds. It is on a five minute cooldown, but if you screw up badly enough that you need it more often than that, you need to reconsider your methodology or your gear for the mobs you're killing. Seventh, fear. This should be one of your last resorts, but it can buy you some time to get off a heal, or finish off a mob. Of course, try to make sure that you have sufficient space. Often, if it's tight enough that you pulled multiple mobs and need to fear, you don't have enough space to fear safely, so always use it with caution. Finally, be ready to run. Sometimes you just don't have the resources to take them on. Maybe you were farming for a bit and had half mana, where you would have been able to take them on with more mana, you can't at that point (though, this is another good case where a Shadowfiend can help). Maybe you were doing fine against them, but one of them got a heal off. Whenever you decide you can't finish them, turn and run. At worst, you'll at least make it to a safer place to ress. And, when you do run, stick to instant casts as much as possible like Shield, Renew, Fear, and even PoM.
1 - PW: Shield
2 - Renew (not really required, but w/e) 3 - DoT both up, your main target with VE (your barrier should hold) 4 - Psychic Scream and Mindflay/Wand/Smite (lol) the main target 5 - Before they come back Renew yourself. 6 - Your shield should be usable again, so maybe use it and drain if you have to 7 - If you're gonna die then Flash Heal/Scream+Greater Heal (if it's available) 8 - Just spam Mindflay/Mind Blast on the 2nd target (Shield = no pushback) and it should die pretty fast. Also VE it if you can. EDIT: Wait he's only level 10...you can kill mobs by a Renew ticking and melee-ing them, you know. EDIT 2: Actually don't renew because it breaks Shadowform.
It changes when you get to bout level 50 then you can just dot them, shield yourself, fear them etc. You wil regenerate a shitload of health due to VE so. After level 50 i just dotted a bunch most of the time.
Remember, Green MOB's are your friend. Find someone at your level, preferably a Warrior, to quest with. Run instances with a group to pick up some good gear and learn group mechanics early on. (Good gear REALLY helps) Put your first 5 points in Wand Specialization then build the Shadow Tree. Buy or otherwise get a good wand. It gets easier quickly.
Yeah, for both PvE and PvP, five points in wand specialization is essential.
Yeah, for both PvE and PvP, five points in wand specialization is essential. If you're wanding in PVP, you just plain fail. Unbreakable Will is ENORMOUSLY more useful in PVP because you can resist fear, stun, and silence which are all common weapons your opponents will use. Wand Specialization is great for leveling, but it's otherwise useless. If you're in a raid or a group, if you're wanding when you have mana, you're not either not playing optimally or risking not getting a heal off in time. If you're suppose to be DPSing, you can do much more dps from casting. If you're suppose to be healing, you should be pre-casting instead of wanding. Wanding in PVE grouping is only useful if you're completely out of mana with all regen abilities used and pot on cooldown, or you're 100% sure you can afford the GCD delay on your next heal and there's a JoW up on the mob. Because you should seldom be wanding in a group and fears, stuns, and silences DO come up in groups and raids, Unbreakable Will is far more useful for PVE as well. That said, Wand Specialization is a great talent, but only if you're leveling or doing a much higher amount of soloing than you are grouping.
Indeed: wand specialisation only when levelling.
No lvl 70 priest (all specs, PvE and PvP) should have wand specialisation in their talent tree...
I'm a Nelf shadow priest, currently 70 and fresh from Kara. Once I had shadowform I was easily able to handle two or three mobs at one time. Even before that I don't remember many problems, mostly because of my extra dot. Knowing how to make careful pulls and when to run away has also saved my life numerous times.
However, after aquring shadow fiend, it was as if I had flipped on a hidden "god mode" switch. Putting some of my points into disc also improved my survivability. If you know how to use your abilities and talents well your priest can have excellent solo survivability. Careful use of VE, sheild, shadow fiend and fear have allowed me to solo six mobs at once, although PvP is still a problem.
IF u draw an add in2 a fight when u r not prepared 4 it just follow my steps (and these r 4 lvl 10 unlike sum of the earlier posts)
1. Renew-its best 2 get this heal up 1st so that it can start ticking (assuming ur not down 2 1 health >_<) 2. PW:Shield-this will keep the dmg off of u 4 a while and stop u from being interrupted 3. SW:Pain-Keeps some dmg moving on the mobs and is instant 4. Lesser Heal-should bring u back up 2 full health at ur lvl with the most recent rank of it 5. Ur shield is probly off of u now if so and the debuff has xpired than shield again 6.start casting mind blast (the aggro doesnt matter if ur soloing) or smite this should finish off ur enemies Add Comment
