ok ive been fury for i cant remember how long now and i have always have been the top dps for the guilds i have been in
but the new guild i am in have asked if i could change to prot spec which is fine by me as ive always wanted to try it but never had the need to.
we started of by getting a few bits on tanking gear together although most of the gear i used in the instance was still my pvp gear -.- .. and we then run a heroic mana tombs . the guild kept assuring me i was doin fine as i was managing to hold the aggro and keeping them all alive but as we got abbit deeper in to the instance ( just after the 2nd boss ) we managed to wipe several times as i lost the aggro and couldnt regain it :( we did manage to do the instance and i did feel some satisfaction as my 1st time tanking ever was a heroic mana tombs not in full tanking gear
im guessing the real question though is does any one have some good advise ( other than get tanking gear ^_~ )on tanking and able to point me in the right way
thanx in advance

wel, if you know your clas then it shouldnt be a problem, just remember that SS-revenge-devastate-devastate, repeat, try to do this one bosses and dont forget to spam heroic strike when posible.
When multitanking it gets a bit harder, but to keep it easy, as long as its 4 or les you can just do thunderclap, sunder then up al once and then focus on first target, second.etc. this only works with DPS that follows kilorder(hard to find these days :p) wich is a reason why PuGtanks are so rare ofcourse.

Single targets are easy for warriors to hold agro no matter the spec, but multitarget tanking gets hard. Like he said without a kill order it's nearly impossible to hold the on more than 3 targets. But best advise i can give is devistate thunderclap devistate switch targets rinse and repeat. works for me. oh and dont forget revenge and heroic strike both are big threat builders.
before starting an instance..u lay down the rules for dps....no aoe unless its a specific aoe pull, no multishot, sweeping strikes, whirlwinds..bla bla....
only dps what the tank is activly tanking and follow the kill order. and dont touch anything untill the tanks gets a few seconds head start on the target. and watch the threatmeter for Gods sake.
a good example is heroic bloodfurnace second boss, where cages open up and 3,4,5 elits rush u, there is no time to mark....the dps simply must use Target of Target under your avatar, or /assist to aqure what u are tanking in that mess....i never switch targets when i tank, i just thunderclap my azz off and they all stay on me, unless someone aoes or fireballs someone im not tanking. this cage fight at secondn boss in heroic BF is a classic test on how well the dps listened to your instructions or if they are nubs....sure, they allways love to blame the tank for fking it up but i cleared that fight effortlessly with some groups and wiped endlessly with others....so trust me, its not the tanks fault.
on bigger bosses like prince in kara, the raid does not engage untill you build 10k threat, and all goes fine ..its a team effort
as far as tanking tips...first u must be prot..a non prot warrior does not have the tools to generate sufficient threat against very high dps geared playes put out. non prot warrior does not have devastate, shield slam , improved thunderclap, fucused rage, improved sunder armor or defiance. these are must haves! u must always be in defence stance as it generates 10% more agro. bind your keys to the keyboard so u can spam your attacks. nuff allready....GO TANK
Remember that it's not ALWAYS the tanks fault if aggro is pulled off him. Your group needs to realize it may take a few secs for you to get stable on threat before they can lay down heavy dps, especially when you have multiple targets to hold.
As far as technique goes, different tanks will tank differently. Meaning some people favor certain moves that others may use sparingly, so you'll need to find what works for you. But here are a few tips/rules that'll help no matter how you do things.
- Hit BLOODRAGE before u pull so you have some rage in the bank to work with.
- Mob positioning is important, so if you can't THUNDERCLAP right away due to the proximity of CCed mobs blow a DEMORALIZING SHOUT while the group is still clumped together, then when CCs are up move your target/targets out of range of sheeps or seds or what-have-you.
- You'll wanna hit the target thats currently being dps'd once for every time you hit a secondary target. So lets say your tanking 3 targets; A, B and C, with A being the main. You'd hit A, then hit B, then back to A, then switch to C, then hit A again, like so.
- Take advantage of the low-rage moves like REVENGE and SHIELD BASH (the one that interrupts casting). SHIELD BASH brings in a decent amount of threat for being so cheap, even if you're not interrupting a cast.
- Don't forget about HEROIC STRIKE and CLEVE (now that it doesn't break CC). Some people opt not to use these moves too often cause of their rage cost, but for trash you should have a set (or at least a few pieces) that focus on mitigation over avoidance, so rage should be abundant.
- It's good to have CONCUSSIVE BLOW and SHIELD SLAM ready if you happen to lose one of you targets and it takes off after a clothy.
- Unless your tanking w/ a spec other than prot, DEVASTATE is your bread and butter, no need to even have sunder on your bar. Also remember to keep SHIELD BLOCK up whenever possible. You'll want the improved SHIELD BLOCK talent as well.
- Use BATTLE SHOUT for trash, COMMANDING SHOUT for bosses (in most cases)
Lastly, remember to talk to the other people in your group. Let em know the order and get on em if they're chronic aggro stealers. Hope something in this post helps ya out. Good Luck.
i notice that habitual threat stealers are fire mages, espatialy if there is not pally in group with salvation. u can have solid threat on the target and no one is near your threat lvl on the meter, and then u can see the meter jump right next to yours as they unload a few fireballs..arena arms warriors also cause problems if they have stance mastery, as it makes mortal strike a high threat attack. so if u an arms warrior who also likes to pve, u can spec 31/30/0 which is decent arena spec yet wont interfere with your tank.
