I dont have a mage but would guess yes as ur wear cloth :-).

Seriously though, check out the tailoring section on the left here and look at the BoP epics and see if they are good for you

Yes it is very good, because when u reach level 65+ u can learn epics and create your epic set, either Spellfire or Shadoweave. Its a 3 piece set and it has lasted me all the way until I got my Tier 4!! :)

To add to the above comment not only do you get the spellfire set (3) you get the spellstrike set too (2)this would be for arcane/fire mage and there is also a frost equivelent so ofc tailoring would be perfect for a mage. Easy to lvl to until you get to about 365 when you have to rely on getting very specific recepies from Mechanar (arconweave set)

Anyway the only other choices if you want to go with the obvious one's are:- Jewelcrafting/mining
                    Engineering/mining
                    Alchemy/Herbalism

They all have their advantages but tailoring imo is the best.

I have a lvl 63 mage and I can't imagine having any more ideal combination of professions than tailoring and enchanting.

You wear cloth so you can make your own stuff and add enchants, to boot. You gather cloth during the normal course of quests and instances so you don't have to go out of your way to find it and it's easy enough to farm if need be.

You can disenchant any bop and boe items you acquire but can't use yourself or d/e items you make as a tailor to gain the mats required to enchant other things.

You can also sell the clothes you make or sell enchants to others. It's a winning combination all the way around.
