Hey Everyone...
I'm actually genuinely curious as to what other massive multi player online games do you all play aside from World of Warcraft?

Consistently:

- EVE Online
- Maple Story (with my 10 year old cousin)
- Mabonogi (it has questionable graphic quality, but it's not bad for fun factor)

Have canceled subscriptions:

- City of Villains
- D&D Stormreach (great graphics, creepy environments, interesting puzzles, but lack of explorable content, instance based game can be boring)
- Lord of the Rings Online (was a beta tester)
- Metal Knights (oh yeah! circa mid 90's!)
- Meridian 59
- Ragnarok Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Priston Tales (cookie cutter grinder)
- Saga of Ryzom (cookie cutter grinder)
- Rappelz (cookie cutter grinder)
- Guild Wars Nightfall
- The Sims Online (dumb-down version of the single player version blew chunks)
- Dark Ages of Camelot (interesting game)
- Kart Racer (like Mario Kart, but it gets boring after a few games)
- Voyage Century
- Pirates of the Burning Sea
- Anarchy Online
- Cabal Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Dungeon Runners (terrible game)
- Fiesta Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Furcadia (circa 1999/2000 I believe)
- Hero Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Kal Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Knight Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Lunia (nice anime graphics)
- MU Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Nexus Kingdom of Winds
- Tales of Pirates (I like the ship aspect of the game)
- PlaneShift (during beta)
- RF Online
- ROSE Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Shaiya (cookie cutter grinder)
- Thang Online (cookie cutter grinder)
- Ikariam (slow but colourful browser game)
- Space Cowboy (pretty good flying sim/action game though quite repetitive)

Games I've played from a friend's place:

- Ultima Online
- Everquest 2
- City of Heroes
- Runescape

I probably tried more games, but don't remember them.

I have a had very brief stint with only two others:

Star Wars Galaxies(not bad, especially if you like star wars)
Ultima Online(nothing compared to WoW)

WoW is by far my favorite and most
played online game ever, thus far.

Ah I knew I forgot one.  Star Wars Galaxies.  You know, the premise of that game isn't bad.  The graphics were super outdated and the physics were terrible.  I remember flying off a cliff with my speeder and not taking damage upon landing.  I also remember the Star Destroyers in low orbit when playing at night.  That was pretty cool.

You're right though.  Nothing beats World of Warcraft.  It's such a good game in my opinion of course.

I spent 3 years playing and completing everything in Guild Wars before I was talked into giving WoW a go by some IRL mates...I had managed a level 20 of evey character type, and complete all the add ons...but I was looking for something new when my guild started to lose interest, and the majority of them went to Eve waiting for GW:2...Eve didn't interest me much, so I ended up here in WoW...LOL

I am not one of those that will get drawn the argument about this game is better than that game etc...but I have found both games to have their pro's and con's and I have enjoyed and hated experiences at times in both...

Does Warcraft II BNE count?

I guess not, lol. I enjoy playing all kinds of games. Last November I saw WOW on sale. I purchased it not really knowing what it was. Figured it would be fun. I like Blizzard games.

Installed it, and what the heck? They want a credit card number. How absurd! Monthly payments, no way. Well, I've already paid for the trial period. I will just cancel it at the end. Boy, Did i get sucked in.

I still hate seeing that monthly charge, tightwad. Considering it's less than 20 cents per hour, I go out kill some mobs, finish a quest and get some 'gold', then i feel good about my entertainment value. Made some new friends too.

I know of the addiction, so is this like drugs? Will I become an MMO junkie now? Is WOW a gateway MMO or is WOW like heroine and I won't get enough of a high off of the others? I'll just keep using it until I rehab or die.

Seems like just about everybody plays, or has played Runescape at some point.

I haven't played many MMOs before, though I did play Maplestory (interestingly enough I still do, but with my 10 year old cousin, lol) and Ragnarok before.

Tried to play a few others but they usually all block China addresses to make us play the China version. Unfortunately my chinese sucks.

Seems like most MMOs are grinding-oriented. That's probably why WoW got so popular...

They're basically all the same under a different skin.  It's a bit unfortunate, but that's how free games are usually.  I find the whole concept of buying decorations for your toons so unnecessarily costly.  My 10 year old cousin calls me up from time to time, telling me how cool subies (sp?) are and hair styles and such.  Basically, he tries to get me to buy him Nexon cards, so he can go buy his decorations.  Geebus, some kids these days just don't know how difficult it was to earn $12 back in the day.  Being a paperboy in the early 90's was tough.  ^_^

@Scuffl:

You know what?  Warcraft 3 was cool.  The graphics were nice and I like how you can change the game experience with mods and maps.  However, I enjoyed Warcraft 1 and 2 a lot more than Warcraft 3.  I'm still not quite sure why.

I'll just keep using it until I rehab or die.

Haha.  8)

@Enigma Punch:

Yes for sure.  I mean, each game was created and people played them at one point or another.  It may be enjoyable for one and not for another.  I've read at other forums how people say WoW sucks because it has this and that and etc, and others say the same thing about GW, LotR Online, D&D Online, etc.

When it all comes down to it, it's just personal preference.  So I totally agree with you there.

Well I've played a few MMO's and WoW seems to be where it's at.

Ultima Online (good game, horrible graphics, really sucked when they brought Trammel into the game, played for about five years)

City of Heroes and City of Villians (Loved the graphics, gameplay was fun, but was tough to find a group after getting to higher levels, played for about a year)

Vanguard (graphics good, gameplay and gliches sucked, played about a week and wasted 50 bucks buying it, glad they gave 30 days free subscription lol)

Phantasy Star Online: for Dreamcast (loved the game but became boring after about a few months, best console MMO I've played)

That's it, WoW has been the best as of yet.  I am looking forward however to Age of Conan.  I'll be giving that a try when it comes out.

From what someone told me today over a million people were in the Beta (of AoC).

Pity it requires you to be 18 or above (was it 18?).

Age of Conan is a game I have played a little bit of not too long ago.

It was fun at first, simply because I used to have a large collection of:  The Savage Sword of Conan magazines

Check them out, sweet illustrations and one of the better 'comics' I have ever read.  Be sure to read:
The Savage Sword series, not the other crap ones.
(sorry nerd comic book moment)

But after playing AoC for about 4 days, I already got bored with it and decided it just was not enough for me.

Madrushian, those are hurtful words lol.  I just went and preordered the damn game today =/.  If you could give me some more info on why the game didn't interest you past four days that would be great thanks.

Do not fear, you may love the game.
I am sure my love of WoW has clouded my judgement.

Plus remember, I only tried the game for a few days and only maybe 6 total hours of play time.  From my very limited exposure though I noticed a lot of hack and slash style play, but very good graphics.

My main problem is probably a build up of expectations due to my love of the comic book.

Hope you have a great time when you get AoC, it just was not my style.

Ahhh gotcha, I'm assuming that you went into it thinking is was gonna be great like going into a movie that is really built up and it failing because you had such high expectations.  Sorry to hear that it let you down after loving the comic books so much.

I knew a few others who were very hooked on Everquest for a while, then they stopped.

Hey GS, have you ever seen the movie:  Wing Commander?

I thought of this movie when you said the physics of Star Wars Galaxies was bad.  In the movie Wing Commander they are absolutely obsurd.

A few examples I remember, and keep in mind, they are in outer space when this is happening:

1)The large ships pull along side each other and fire braodsides like it is 1500s naval warfare.

2)When the smaller ships take off from the larger ships they go down a landing strip like a frickin runway, what the hell man, you are in space, no runway needed.

3)Even worse, when they hit the end of the 'runway' they dip down like they were being pulled by gravity!

4)They attempt to evade sound tracking devices in space by being really quiet in their ship.  FYI, sound does not travel through the vacuum of space.

I do not pretend to work for NASA or anything, but even my feeble mind noticed these 'oddities' when I watched the movie.

/end rant

@Liman01:

Phantasy Star Online: for Dreamcast (loved the game but became boring after about a few months, best console MMO I've played)

Every time I walk through Best Buy or Future Shop, I happen on Phantasy Star.  I've read some reviews on it and it seems like another grinder game, but I like some of the features it has.  Not sure still, but would you recommend it at all?  I know you said best console MMO and there is a PC version.

@bananaz:

From what someone told me today over a million people were in the Beta (of AoC).

Seems like the preview for this game was quite hyper.  Great graphics, beautiful ever-changing environment, interesting game play, etc.  I might give it a try.  That or I can save up for a Fallout 3 Collector's edition - huge fan of Fallout series.

Though I'm thinking that Warhammer Online is probably like a 'mature' version of WoW in terms of story board (which it is) and the feel of the game.  I might give that a try too.

@Gnomoli5:

I used to play Toontown ya i know

It's all good.  I used to play Furcadia.  You know?  It's about fuzzy animals in clothes that walk on their hind legs and interact with people via role playing.  I think Toontown is cooler though.

@butterhead:

I have only played wow and I am thinking, why try anything else?

WoW, like other games after awhile gets boring.  Sometimes, I want a little bit of action.  Sometimes, I want a more in-depth role playing game.  Sometimes, I want gorgeous scenery while doing battle with an enemy fleet amongst a massive armada of Minmater warships.

^_^

@madrushian:

have you ever seen the movie:  Wing Commander?

I was totally and utterly disappointed at the movie.  I remember before it came out, everyone was hyping on it.  It was like "It's based on the game!"  We should have known better, but come on - it was based on the game!  ^_^

So we watched it and half way through, people in the audience were making fun of the scenes - the super cheesy lame ass scenes.  Man, that was...  Yeah.

That part about the landing strip totally did not make sense.  I remember my friend saying "WTH?!?!  IT'S IN SPACE!  WHY DO YOU NEED TO LAND LIKE THAT?!?!?"  Hahaha!

That thing about sound - you're completely right!  We were like "Excuse me?  Sound through space?  How the hell does sound travel through nothing?"

Ah sheesh.  A great game turned into a terrible movie.  I hope if they ever make a Starcraft or a Warcraft movie, it won't turn out to be crap.

Ginseng, Phantasy Star Online was good on the dreamcast when I was 15 and only had dial up lol.  Fun game but like I said it became boring quite quickly.

Also when I was in Best Buy I saw the sequel to this game, it's called Phantasy Star Universe.  OMG it's absolute garabage!!!  Such a let down after having liked the first one.

I'd recommend the first one if we could go back in time when people actually played the game, because you can't play it online without a group lol.  Other than that it's a waste of your time.

Ah okay.  I didn't know it was THAT old.

As for Phantasy Star Universe, I'm glad you you told me that.  I've seen some pretty mixed reviews for that game and had considered getting it a few times, but I'm not much into grinding games for one.  Though I like the anime theme.  Ah well.  If only they made a MMO like Zelda or Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy - the original top-down ones.
