Ya, but if any of ya'll have played wow before you would realize.  Blizzard does this on pretty much every patch, they give you a time, problems occur, more time is added.  It's just the way it is. Enjoy your time by checking out the new talents and trying to figure out wtf your going to do with all these changes lol.

TO EVERYONE STUCK DOWNLOADING THE PATCH: if you haven't already, turn off peer to peer in options somewhere in that window when you get past 80%. It keeps you up in the high %s because it is feeding data to other people and not giving you the last little chunk.

You're right, we shouldnt complain that they should give us a "free day". We sign up and past experience dictates that on patch day, there will be unexpected problems, and we wont get on, and they wont really say why. That being said, lets look at it a different way.

150 Million dollars a month, in membership fees alone. But dont forget merchandise, new product sales, things like that. Sure they have expenses, but 150 mil...a month. 1.8 Billion, annually.

1.2gb patch. They know its 1.2gb, they know the day they're releasing it, it goes to alpha, beta, open beta, they've done their testing, yet *every* time a patch goes live ~ "whoops, /enters unexpected issue". I could stand to wait a week for a patch to go live more than waiting a day to simply log in. Maybe some more beta is in order? A few more ptr servers? Or have us download and apply the patch locally, but roll the server side installations over several days so its not *every* server at once. First, that would limit your "zomg rush to log on" load. Second, if you hit a glitch somewhere its only one server at a time, and you know about the glitch and how to fix it on subsequent installations.

Anyway, im not bitching for a free day or whatever, I just find it funny that for 1.8 Billion dollars annually, *every* time there is a patch, they drop the ball.

So just got back from the store with my beer, tried to log in:
went past authentication, realm selection, and to the character selection screen, but gets stuck on loading.


BOY this is some damn good BEER. I wonder if I will be too drunk to play by the time I actually get to play....

Long downloads, lots of lag, more people in Stormwind right now than have been there cumulatively up to now.  This is just like the old days.  hehe

When my husband and I first started playing, it was when WoW had just started.  We got hooked during the Stress Test.  There was something like a million people who signed up in the first 24 hours.  Blizzard thought they might get a million people by the end of the first year.  They had to quickly scrounge up more hardware.

There was only one Alliance auction house, and that was in Ironforge (the Horde one was in Orgrimmar).  You couldn't move through Ironforge, you had to just take one step, pause, pause some more, then take another step.  Or several more steps, which made you end up in that cool pit between the auction house and the bank.

Most of the mining nodes just outside of towns were bugged.  We learned to avoid them.  Well, we would pretend to race the newb's to one, then watch as they got stuck on it. 

And the loot lag was horrible.  Everything seemed normal, reach down to pick up loot, and suddenly you are frozen in that position until you log off and back on. 

Taxi birds were a little different then.  You couldn't fly from one end of the continent to the other.  Where the birds now make a little circle over a connecting point, they used to just land.  Then you clicked on the taxi person and started flying again.  Made it a little tedious.

Then the boats started dumping us in the middle of the ocean.  Not just an inconvenient swim to land, but in the dark water, where fatigue started in immediately.  So you die, and either run across the water to your body, or give up and resurrect.  We usually went back out, and tried to swim back to blue water before we died again.

However, Blizzard did fix and upgrade and modify, to make a game that runs remarkably smooth.  I've had problems in the last few days, and upon petitioning for a GM, had one appear within an hour.  The GM's have been patient and efficient.

So give it a few days, let the bugs get worked out, and enjoy the game.  This too shall pass.  Meanwhile, work on your personal hygiene, eat some nutritious meals, and get ready for the expansion on 13 November.  Because none of us are going to be doing much other than the expansion for at least the following weekend.

When it was finally finished on his computer after 10 hours of downloading, during which my brother couldn't use his computer, I just copied the patch to my data-stick, walked to my computer and pasted it onto my harddrive and installed it.

Boy was he pissed!

Qhe's Guide to Patch 3.0.2 101!!!

So, this is what's supposed to happen if everything goes the way you want it.

What Originally Happens

After server shutdown, as always you log in.
A patch is anew, therefore you can download it.
Once you click on the 'Resart' Button inside wow, or the launcher, you are brought to a 'Blizzard Downloader' Thing.
Now, to make it faster put the 'Peer-to-Peer' in Preferences off.

Patiently, wait for the patch to download.

Here are some ways to pass the time.
Drink Beer. 18+
Watch TV. All Ages.
Go for a smoke. (I seriously don't recommend this, as it will harm you.'
Watch pr0n. (If your the type of guy...well you know what im talking about)
Go out with your friends to a movie.
Go out with your girlfriend to the movies. (If you have)
Sleep.
Last thing, don't get too stressed.

After it's done, it will close itself and a downloader locater will come up. Look for the World of Warcraft Directory, and download it there.

After that, a 'Blizzard Updater' will come up. Wait for it to finish.

Launch WoW pre-Wotlk. End of the Original happening.

Logging in Problems

Log in. If you can't get through one of those 'Handshaking', or 'Authentication' try a hour or so later. A few 10 mins would be ok too.

If you get stuck in the character loading screen, do as i told you above, or restart your computer.

If you get stuck in the loading screen, then like i said, wait for awhile and then try again.

If you log in, and Lag like hell, try i when the population of your server is low.

Server Problems

If your server isn't there, probably Blizz techs are trying to bring it back up and restore the characters. (What im guessing is that, something went wrong when they server restarted, and the characters got deleted or something, probably not though)

Computer Problems

If you start WoW, and your computer instantly freezes, then your computer would have a problem. Maybe the specifications?

Patch Problems

If you have a problem downloading the patch, probably uninstall WoW, and reinstall.

Hopefully Blizzard will get rid of this problem.

Um, I realize I'm a little behind the discussion here, as the real problem occurred weeks ago, but I was bored so I read through the yellow comments.  All I can say is WTF!  Why, for the love of god, do people feel this strange urge to bicker about EVERYTHING anymore?  I'm compelled, for the first time in god knows how long, to post a comment on Thottbot because the community here is so ridiculously random and frequently thoughtless in it's arguments toward each other.

Half of you are crying that you can't get on the servers, that Blizzard released a bugged patch, etc. etc.  Ok, there is something seriously wrong with this thought process on several levels.  First, you complain irrationally about Blizzard.  It's obvious that Blizzard produces products that are not only of an at least acceptable quality to a large number of people, but are also acceptable to you!  You are here, spitting insults toward Blizzard, because you can't play the game THEY created!  If you hated Blizzard, and they do such a poor job, well then you, by all rights, you would not be involved in this discussion, because you would have no reason to be here,  and you certainly  wouldn't be complaining with such ferocity about your inability to play their buggy, horrible game.  It just doesn't make sense. 

Secondly, if you can't play a game, as several of your antagonists have suggested, find something else to do.  There are so many other things to do.  You can't seriously tell me you sit at your computer during all your free time, playing, or waiting to play, this game?  If you are telling me that, there's something wrong.  Game addiction is a relatively new psychiatric problem, but it is very real.  If you honestly feel your entire life is on hold, and your day is absolutely ruined because you can't sign into WoW, please, for the love of god, get some help.  I'm not trying to insult you here, I'm just saying, you have an honest problem and you need to seek counseling or something.

As for the proponents of Blizzard, yes, it is nearly impossible to release a patch of this magnitude without encountering bugs.  In fact, I would say it was completely impossible, except that if I said that it would most likely occur in my next breath, making a liar of me.  Allot of people’s gripes on here are probably not even bug related anyways.  Downloading a patch for hours on end is not a bug... it's millions of people clogging up the servers trying to do the same thing.

That being said, there were bugs in the patch, and people were forced to download for extreme lengths of time due to server side lag issues.  This prevents people from playing the game which they subscribe to so that they can play it, not so they can watch a download bar or pull their hair out trying to figure out wth is wrong with their computer.  I'm a gaming fool.  I play all sorts of games, MMO's, RPG's, RTS', FPS', etc.  HANDS DOWN Blizzard is THE BEST computer gaming company around right now.  First Bliz game I ever played was WC.  Found a copy of SC later and played the hell out of that.  I more or less skipped Diablo and played straight into D2 which was an amazing game, in fact if I could ever have been considered addicted to gaming it would be during my D2 days, thankfully I more or less learned my lesson on that issue in that time.  WoW is, of the MMO's I have played, the best one available, I have been playing it off and on for years now.  Anyways the point is I don't have enough good things to say about Blizzard, I love their games, and own more of their games than any other single company, outside of console games, but we are talking about computer games here... at least I am. :D 

Now that that digression is aside, it is not, in my opinion, unreasonable for people to ask for an extra day of game play based on their inability to log on during times like this.  I don't necessarily think Blizz should be required to provide it, but it would certainly make sense if they did and would be a good P.R. move for them.  You say people should go out and find something to do and stop freaking out because they can't sign into a game, but for people like me, who have a family and don't want to spend all their free time trying to get a monitor tan, you only have certain times available to actually sit down and play a game.  When patching and a lack of bandwidth interfere with that time, it is completely reasonable to get moderately frustrated with the situation.  As a side note, I just restarted playing wow 2 days ago.  I did not have an active account during the time of this patches release and in no way stand to benefit from them refunding a days game play time, so don't think that’s why I'm saying this.

Lastly, I feel I must say, Blizzard makes ALOT of money on WoW.  Spout overhead all you want they make ALOT of cash.  In fact, Blizzard profits more in a moth, after overhead than the vast majority of you could hope to make in your lifetime.  That being said, "Blizzard doesn't make a billion dollars a year" is not a good reason for them to not refund peoples playtime.  If they don't make a billion dollars a year they are making hundreds of millions a year.  Hell if they profited just 12 million a year, which is a remarkably small fraction of their profits, and you know it, that’s still more than allot of people make in their life, every month!  No one at Blizzard is going to starve, and they are not going out of business anytime soon, assuming they continue to provide the quality of products and service they have to date.  Reimbursing people for lost time is a good way to ensure those services are well accepted amongst their clients.

Well, that was incredibly long winded, but was kind of fun at the same time.  If anyone actually reads through this entire thing, congratulations! You likely have a longer attention span than I do.  Also, the whole point of this is to say stop fighting about stupid shit, both sides of every issue have valid points, discussing something and coming to a constructive conclusion on a situation requires people to openly accept the messages from both sides of an argument and sort out what is logical and useful, and what is just nonsense in both arguments.  The odds that anyone is 100% correct in much of anything is unlikely, so stop acting like any of you, on either side, know it all, and start talking to each other like civilized people.  Flame away at me if you like, I am no exception to this rule, I just get tired of reading arguments where, in the end, it seems everyone has just managed to piss everyone else off, and nothing has actually been resolved.
