82,38 Badlands
I kill 18 not elite whelps and drop black heart.
There is a valley of whelps you can farm for this quest drop. The drop rate is pretty low so it can take a while if you don't get lucky early on. Valley entrance is around 68,52 and the mobs are non elite 41-43.
As a side-note related to lore, Feranor Steeltoe is the dwarf guy in the second mission of the human campaign in Reign of Chaos. He asks Arthas to kill a black dragon, Searinox, and gives him a fire orb, which acts a little like the reward of this quest.

BTW - If you're thinking of getting one of the WoW Guides, I STRONGLY suggest Nyhm's Guides. I've seen a lot of guides and this one is the best! Contains everything I'll ever need!
yep 72.57 badlands i killed just 3!!!
Finally, after killing over 60 Scalding Whelps in Lethlor Ravine (Badlnads)... I got the Black Drake's Heart to drop off one at 84,29... This drop rate SUCKS!!! It could drop on your first kill, or take 2hrs like it did me.
The drop rate sucks alright. I went in with empty packs and a lvl 45 Rogue, left with a lvl 46 55 minutes later and:
42 thick leather
28 heavy leather
2 heavy Hide
19 mitherel ore
8 iron ore
8 flame sacs
4 gold ore
2 citrine
1 black Vitriole
and a Chromite Girdle
and a lot of grays
and No Drakes heart
Glad i'm a skinner/miner
I'll go back when I have more time to waste.
OMG!!!!!!!!! i killed 186 whelps for 3 and a half hours! but i finally got heart but i dont think it was worth the time!

I didn't really count but think it was less than 10 (never saw the elite guy) before I got the heart. Of course then I had to kill a few more to get back out of the area. :)

Bad advice on going for the elites. There's only a .4% increase in the drop rate over the whelps. Those of you that got the drop after one or two elites were just getting lucky.
I personally killed 7 elites without getting the drop before going back to the whelps. The .4% increase in drop rate doesn't even come close to justify wasting the time and risk involved in killing an elite instead of a normal mob.
I wouldn't put this on your main weapon.
It has an AoE effect and it will awaken anything around you that has been sheep'd, sap'd, or put to sleep if your weapon proc's with this enchantment. You want to piss off your entire group in a dungeon, then go ahead and slap this baby on your main weapon. You'll be lucky to find a group again. The drop rate for this thing sucks and I wouldn't waste my time on it. I got it today after killing about 80 whelps. Now I've decided to just let it sit and rot in the bank unless I find a good secondary weapon to put this on that I would only use in PvP or soloing. DO NOT PUT THIS ON YOUR MAIN WEAPON AND GO INTO AN INSTANCE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
No, for a MT (main tank) warrior (only), this isn't as bad as you make it out to be.
Anything that can help with maintaining agg on a MT (such as this thing can), whether an instance or otherwise, is a Good Thing.
Certainly, in 100% of instance/group situations, you don't want to to have agg acquired from 10 yards away, MT or otherwise. So carry a backup 1h weapon (in exchange for a main 1h buffed with this enchant to go along with shield) to use in such situations.
For many or most situations in instances as a MT, however, this chant is great.
First off, you can find the elite dragons in Lethlor Ravine, all the way on the easternmost side of the Badlands. When fighting one of them, make sure you have some sort of heal ready, as they do nothing but breathe fire all over you. They never stop doing it either, and needless to say, it hurts. That being said, it'd be in your best interest to have some sort of health regenerating implement on stand-by.

this is DEFINATELY worth it if you're a Skinner/LW because you get thick leather off nearly all of these so it saves grinding on something else, when u can grind on these for a quest aswell...i hope that made sense =P

YES BY ALL MEANS GO FOR THE WHELPS OVER THE ELITE DRAKES!!! All caps was only necessary to grab your attention. =P The whelps are much easier to kill and can be soloed by anybody that is even remotely close to matching their level. Took me about 30 minutes to get my drop as a 41 resto shaman. Try to spend the time leveling a weapon skill like I did and kill two birds with one stone to pass the time.
Fix? I love thottbot. I go through and read all the posts just out of curiosity. Maybe it's not broken. Sure the drop rate might seem a little low, but did you ever stop to think that maybe not everything in life (or WoW) is going to be easy? It's great how people think every quest item should drop on the first kill.
Anyways, I found this the same place everyone else did in Lethlor Ravine (81.51) on the Non-Elite Whelps. Probably took 40-50 kills and i'm not complaining. It was a nice grind.
i havent tried the enchant being that i just got done with this quest (an hour later). yes it has very good exp. plus if you collect all the wings and fire sacs off of them it might turn into a small profit for you so overrall i hope this was worth it.....
Has anyone besides me noticed this quest is a reference to Blizzard's own game?
In the... second human mission for Warcraft III I believe it is, there's two dwarves who ask you to go kill a Black Dragon ?Searinox? and get his heart, plus in Arthas's (your only hero at the time) inventory it says ?"The still beating heart of Searinox"?
Returning to the dwarves with the heart and you get an orb of fire, which the dwarves also comment that it will strike with searing heat. Also the orb does cause splash damage, as in WoW, but most people don't mass sorceress to polymorph people in Warcraft III. =P
Also in the quest description, Sigrun mentions he was the apprentice of Feranor Steeltoe, it's been too long since I've played Warcraft III, but I believe that was the dwarf's name.
No way, mate...Ur complitely Right!..
I just have played da game All over, for god knows how many times and yes!.Everything da same...
but, in w3 it dead easy...compared to this one...
i was gonna post that right now haha =) searinox ftw =P love when blizz makes these things. this guy also says when you complete the q: "This will enable your weapons to strike with searing heat!" damn i wanna play some warcraft 3^^
Has anyone else besides you noticed the entire thing is a reference to blizzards own game? ala World of Warcraft
Killed 10 Scalding Whelps in Badlands and it dropped. They were lvl 41-43 pretty easy quest if you ask me. You'll find them in Lethlor Ravine to the east.
No, this does NOT soulbind the item. I just put it on a Flurry Axe and passed it to my AoE pally through the mail.
Also, I'm pretty sure you can trade this enchant through the "will not be traded" box as per a regular enchant, so you could get a friend to do the quest as well.
FYI: This on a Flurry Axe ROCKS for AoEadins.
Theres two ways into the Lethlor Ravine, a path under it and a path above it, i killed all the of Scalding Whelps on the path below the Ravine several times, and no luck. Then I tried the path above and sure enough, after about seven kills, I had the Black Drake's Heart. When you are running along the path above the Ravine you'll come to a right turn that takes you down into the Ravine, but to the left you can see a space up into the hills so I went into the hills a little ways and thats were I found the whelp that had the heart.
Dear Diary... how many days have I been here?
Badlands wasn't so bad at first... except for when I had to gather buzzard pieces for some strange little green men...
I think this desert is getting to me.
Must find Black Drake Heart...
Out of food and water...
I don't know if this Shaman can make it...
I've killed 50 Whelps and a giant scaly beast who spewed fire at me...
I don't even know their names anymore, let alone my own.
(God this is taking a while for the thing to drop...)
Hopefully yours, beloved Diary.
Flo
took me over an hour, the gnome next to me, 6th one, go figure.
What enchantment makes your weapon glow?
No this quest CAN NOT be completed by horde players, and as far As I know there is no horde equivalent.
Adding this enchant to a BOP weapon then selling it on the neutral AH house may still be possible though.
yea.. second kill lmao.. coord, 70, 51 at the entrance to lethlor ravine.. maybe just my server has a good SR though :/
good luck
most worth less quest ever not worth the time
Okay yes this quest is extremely hard but the enchant looks really cool i killed about 75 of these things in an hour i am a lvl 41 prot pally and it wasn't a hard quest just annoying it is a really good enchantment for a weapon u choose to solo with and or pvp but they are right not so much dungeons unless you are with a low lvl group and u are running them
This had to have been the WORST drop rate I've ever suffered... about 100-150 some odd whelps later, I finally got the heart! I just wish the quest better justified what dragons to go after. That elite one was a nightmare...
well me and 2 friends we north to south * south to north for 3 hours killing everything. no heart drops were crap aswell.
all we got was a cloak and a pair of boots rubbish.
ended up leaving for another time.
the droprate might be low but i gained it in 20 kills
but who cares mutch grindin and training right?
wow, easy to create account dont have to do anything other then make account name and password then hit create new account, thanks thottbot.
anyhow level 56 ne hunter and I did get the heart after killing about 10 elites and 10 little whelps, got a couple herbs and I did see some mitril ore in the area, not sure where I'll put the enchant now (main polearm) but glad I didnt have to do some special heart surgery while it (level 45 elite) still had health, was out there with my 3rd pet a level 40 boar that I had stabled when I got the badlands prowler, I thought that killing at the pets level would give it experience then I read in gm help notes that a pet levels when killing mobs at the hunters level.
and the buzzard wings, look for the starving buzzards north of digsite. good luck players!
oh ya i forgot to mention, im only lvl 40 but killing the guys was easy but boring.
i dont know how u guys are having so much trouble. come from loch modan and hang on the left side of the hill and you will see a path. i killed all day at thtom went to repair came back and on my 2nd kill i got it.
I killed 2 Scalding Whelps at 82,36 and the heart dropped.
I killed 1 whelp and got it. I enchanted someone else's item (they were enchanting white weapons to send back and forth between their lower level chars) and sold it to them for 40g. Worked out well for me cause I probably would not have gotten the best use out of it, and I was flat broke at the time. But not anymore :)
