You MUST use the pick axe BEFORE looting. I killed 6 b4 I figured that out... I also opened a ticket. Good Luck!

The key point is to make sure you don't attack the stone giants UNTIL they become "runed" stone giants. Once the stone giant emerges, the workers will install runes on them and that is when they become "runed" stone giants. We also had one of the 3 in our party who did not have the quest, and when it came up for her to loot them, you can't get the quest reward, so you may want to do "free for all loot" in that case. Just FYI.
This quest is piss easy if u are a DK, simply kite the mob.
1. Chains of Ice 2. Death Coil 3. Icy Touch Repeat that process till he dies. You dont need to do exactly in that order, just make sure u dont let him get close to u.

This quest is easy to to solo with any class as long as you still have the quest "The Rune Of Command". "The Rune Of Command" quest provides you with a rune that lets you control an elite stone giant (yellow - non-aggresive). This giant can be used to fight the runed stone giant. Just be aware that the stone giant will only be under your control for about 5 minutes. During the course of this quest you will need to use the ruin to control additional stone giants as you will not be able to kill all 4 runed stone giants before you loose control of the stoned giant. Also remember that you need to use the pick on the dead runed giant before looting it

Just solo'ed it as a lvl 70 holy priest.
Used a little trick though! Get the quest [The Rune of Command] and use the Stone Giant to help you out, he does a 3 second stun every 5-10 seconds... Just kited him and while my Giant stunned him, Holy Fire / Smite... Rince and Repeat. If he ever hits you, dispel the dot. Enjoy :)
Lol, soloed damn easily as a poorly geared 72 balance druid. Entangle and just nuke away at will, hes slow, hits damn hard if he does get close, but dont be that dumb if you're a ranged class? Damn easy.
Sorry if this was already posted but...go to the northern part of Giant's Run where the snow starts. Kill the runed giants as they walk up into the snow. (Watch the rams with AoEs) Use the pick and you are done. Worked no matter if you looted first or not. Good luck.

Note to hunters- it seems that if your pet damages the giant before you do, you can't use the pick to get the quest objective. I see lots of hunters in here mentioning that they can't mine them- that's probably why.
70 DK and i found this quest quite easy...
all i did was chains of ice, icy touch, death coil, and dancing rune blade... the rune blade helps a lot but it wasnt necessary... also having a bit of frost spec helps because of the increased range of the icy touch/chains of ice... keep him slowed down with icy touch and weave around the trees the only thing that made me die was aggroing another one lol hopes this helps
Lvl 70 hunter, killing the actual giants solo is almost impossible but I just killed Megalith 3 times after dying a lot while killing my first giant. Megalith is much much much eacier than the actual giants.

Solo'd 73 blood DK. Strategy was summon ghoul, attack from afar with icy touch and death coil. When ghoul dies use all buffs and melee till he gets a little below half life. Then put up anti-magic shell and continue melee. use rune tap/death strike as needed but chances are you will kill him before anti-magic shell wears off.
If u are a dk like me, just use spell shield or what its called, but hold it in for a moment, the giants dont start casting the 1800 dmg spells immediately, and if u activate the shield at the beginning of the fight it wont last til when it starts to get really tricky.

Easy to solo for a lvl 70 affliction warlock.
Coordinates: 70.18 in Howling Fjord Pick a giant, Curse of Exhaustion, run north or west (there are no other mobs) and dot him, you even have time to turn around for an Immolate, Unstable Affliction or Shadowbolt now and then. A good place to take these guys is directly north of the Lodestone (which is the subject of the next quest in the line and is at 71,17). Stand on the hill in the snowy area (around 71,15) and face south. The giants will come trudging their slow butts up the hill one or two at a time every minute or two. Wait for a single giant and take him. As an Afflock, I found (after dying a few times trying to solo) that these guys not only hit very hard and will tear through your VW in a hurry, but also they hit with Shadow damage. Here was my pattern of attack: Stood 20 or so yards north of the snow line and waited. Giant came lumbering up. When he hit the snow line, sicced VW on him. Let VW engage. Then popped him with CoA, Corruption, Haunt and UA. They are immune to Life Drain! Let that go until VW was at about 50% health (which is pretty quick). Then used Health Funnel for one cycle, then a quick Life Tap. By then it was time to renew Haunt (don't clip), CoA, and UA (Corruption renews by itself with new Haunt). Also hit him with instant cast Shadow Bolt if Nightfall procs. Use Health Funnel again and try to repeat process. When Giant turns on you, refresh as many DoTs as practical, hit a quick Shadow Ward and kite him to the north. There is nothing but non-aggro Rams up there and you will avoid any other Giants coming up that way. You should have him pretty close to dead by then. Refresh CoA and Corruption as necessary while you kite him around and that should do the trick. It worked for me at 76. Hope any part of this helps you too. Good luck and have fun! Tul
well actualy quest is soloable for dks (giants run) you just need to follow these instructions
1.prepare for fight buff up have ghoul ect and be in frost stance 2. pull giant. 3.unless your buffed with bone shield (for unholy atleast he will hit you for 800 with bone shild 500 4. nuke him with what you got and look for a buff he will get 5. the buff he gets comes in a stack on 5 and each time he uses one you will have another 200 dps note that this is melle range. 6. the rest of fight is kite where you run in circles useing chains of ice and poping frost feaver consistantly well your pet fights him. if pet pulls you can run back to nuke him but most of time pet dosent 7.use pick to get credit soloed as lvl 70 shammy with BC preraid EQ by telra, Score 0.00

Soloed as a 70 Protection Paladin
How: Put up shadow resistance, he hits you with a shadow debuff that stacks and it hits hard. That will help against that. Also use your stun as often as you can to give you a chance to heal. They dont have alot of HP, only 26k (or something like that) but they do hit hard. Even if you dont need to heal, stun him..it will save you from having to take damage for a few seconds. Keep your avenger shield up at ALLTIME, hit doesnt hit very often, but when he does it hurts. Every block is huge. And lastly, save Divine shield till you really need it (i.e. when your health is low so you can heal). He stuns sometimes so if he does and your health is low, you're done. Save it till a moment like this to bring your health back up. Not easy, but more than doable
Did half as lvl 69, half as 70. Enh shammy. Bring out the dogs then your fire elemental. Remember to wind shock because that dark rune spell they do is painful- even with your instant heals. Let the dogs tank as much as possible.
THAT"S HOW TO SOLO THIS QUEST: If by some reason u can't do this quest on Howling Fjord wait till u get to Grizzly Hills and there u'll have another quest "Free at Last"(last part of the chain), you will have the stone which weakens the Giants, after that they are very easy to kill(become non-ellite) and u can analyze their corpses. So if ur willing to wait till around lew.74 keep ur mining axe, the quest is still yellow so same exp.! I discovered it by accident, good luck.
My brother has this quest on his 80 warr and never did it, so i went with him to do it. We killed runed giants and he tried it both ways (loot then pick) and vise versa and it will not give credit either way dont know if its just a glich or what but very frustrating to say the least.
Easy to solo as a 70 demo lock. Put felguard on him load up curse of doom and corruption. Then spend the rest of the fight just doing health funnel. You may have to fight a doomguard when it is over.
Soloed as both an unholy DK and a Fire mage. DK tactic is same as the above ones. The mage rotation i used is below.
Start perpendicular to the giant, and at max frostbolt range. 1. Frostbolt 2. Scorch (better with the talent and gylph) 3. Living Bomb (run to him a bit) 4. Frost Nova 5. Ice Lance until it breaks 6. Fire Blast (run to him a bit) 7. Blast Wave (turn away) 8. Blink (Turn back) 9. Living Bomb 10. Frostbolt repeat from 4, until he is dead, and kite him in a large circle so you dont pull him too far and have to start again.
I did it as a 70 Frost Mage solo. All you have to do is clear everything around the mob and put your water elemental out and keep on freezing it in place as long as you can. If it comes out and you can't freeze it cone of cold or frostbolt it to slow it down. Super easy as a frost mage with crappy gear.
As a lvl 70 BM hunter I was just a little bit shy of being able to solo everytime so I put the quest on hold for a bit, thought maybe I would get 71 first. I went on to finish the other quests around the area... not sure what qest chain it is from but at some point you will get one called "The Rune Of Command" this involves you using the rune to control a "Stone Giant" (the regular one) and you get to keep it until you finish the quest. I decided to see if it would attack anything I did or only the mob for that quest. And sure enough it will attack anything that hits you. SO in closing if you dont mind putting quest on hold for a while you can complete alot easier.
Do this quest with the "rune of command" quest http://thottbot.com/q11352 - it gives you a nice and nasty stone giant pet.
I just tried this as a 78 muti rogue, and I am getting owned all over the place. I blew everything that I had that can stun them and I just can't do it. I am pretty sure that there are other people out there who - given the same character and spec as me - could manage it easily, but I just can't do it. I suspect I do probably suck :P However, I stand by the fact that you would have to be a bloody good rogue to solo these bad boys.
I just want to say, if this quest does not give very much rep. Don't waste your time doing it. It only gives 5 gold and a whole lot of wasted time and armor repair.
