Found the Thane at 27, 73 (at the top of a building like it says in the quest text. He takes a while to kill, but nothing special.
Love these dragon flying quests...
As said in a previous post, it's imperative that u hit stun as often as possible and then hit buttons 1 and 3 to do damage. If u continue to hit stun this is not difficult, even for a clothie.
It took me about 4 or 5 tries to figure out how to kill him.
First, it is possible to shoot him from outside his range, but if you do so, when he dies or you move close to him, he will will just reset, so this trick doesn't work.
The way to kill him is to go right up next to him and use your spells in this order. 2,3,1,1 and repeat. I was a clothy and I killed him with 7k hp left and my dragon with 15k.

..and when he says get close he means get really close, try to put the dragons nose on the roof, and make sure you hit 2(stun) to start combat. then 3, then 1, then 1 again, 2 will almost be ready. repeat

Yeah that 2, 3, 1,1 thing really helped. For me it was pretty close, but it got the job done and left me free to have fun on the drake (which involved flying up as high as I could, then dismounting and parachuting down- very fun, I recomend it after compleating the quest)

Be careful you don't go too high before dismounting. I did and found that the parachute drifts and you can't control it. I'd gone so high I difted out over the lighthouse and out into the sea outside of the Grizzly Hills zone. Doh!
yeah so i felt like a total noob trying to do this quest at first....turned to thottbot and wow...thanks for the tip! very helpful. im a 73 fury warrior and you do definitely need to land right next to him or he will dps the crap outta you and the dragon. my dragon did however die, but i was able to kill him the rest of the way, even though i died jumping off the building.
As a lock, love the analogy of "toiletpaper for armor". Read your message first, died once only 15% left on Thane...got close in, right side of him, 3-2-1-1-3-2-1-1 over and over and I did it! Thanks to everyone...have fun!

Talking to the dragon required me to get rigth up in its face and to click several times. It finally opened, maybe it was buged. Rest of the quest was as they said, but the guy you are seeking is on a balcony under the roof overhang....I had been looking on the roof tops.
It was a fun quest to do. Because of 2's cooldown being so long I went 2-3-1-1-1-3 and then repeated with half of the dragon's life left. After I killed him I just flew back to Conquest Hold and dismounted before he could throw me.
1. Talk to the dragon named flamebringer at 26.77
2. Kill Thane Torvald Erikkson at 27.23
Notes: Make sure you keep up your flame buffet on him and then DPS.
Good advice about getting close!
I tried ranging him, but the dragon is no match for his bow.
Next I landed on the larger side of the platform. After five tries I figured out that the #2 knockdown move has to be done whenever it comes up. Fill in with #1 and #3 when #2 is on cooldown. By doing this I could get him down to around 15%. The dragon dies and you don't get much time to live if you are a clothie. Spam whatever instants you have.
If someone else is doing the same quest, just party up, both of you can get a dragon to ride, and with two of you it is easy and both get credit for the kill.
Ok i died first time....
Second try i did this:
Flew right up and into the wall behind Thane.
He didnt even attack me or the dragon. I didnt land beside him, i was kinda stuck beside the doorjam. To my benefit, he didnt attack.
i inched my way backwards, so i could attack him.
(fighting with dragons head in the wall mostly)
So while still hovering beside him, i hit him with #2, then alternated with #1-#3, and ALWAYS refreshing the #2 button when its up. When you target him, watch to make sure hes affected by your first attack, then KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE 3 BUTTONS IN YOUR NEW ACTION BAR!! You will see the cooldowns on those 3 and can alternate them accordingly!!Only lost half health.
When i was done, i just flew straight to lodge to hand quest back in, and about half way to lodge (outside Voldune) i got a warning that the dragon was going to put me down, since out of area. So i skimmed the ground going up the mountain and he ejected me, with no damage and i just mounted and ran to hand in quest.

This was so helpful, the first time I tried this way my dragon died but I stayed on the platform. I would have still killed him if I hadn't accidently shadowed when I meant to hit with force of nature. Tip for druids - don't do that.
Otherwise, if you go right up to the wall and do as this post says, the dragon takes most of the dammage and you can kill him. The second time I tried both me and the dragon lived. I didn't try to fly back to the lodge, lol I just landed and got off and ran back.
All in all, with the tips here, its doable. :)
My lvl 74 lock was able to do this easily (once I found the thane). As said above, just dive in very close and hit button 2, then steadily hit 3,1,1,2 in that order, over and over. You will kill him with plenty of life left, but like me, and others, will probably not make it back to camp, so fly low. :)
For peeps without a grid, stand under the head of the chained dragon, point your arrow on the mini-map due north...the tall slim building in the distance just to the right of the center of your screen is the thane's location.
By Far the best strategy written for this fight, works with anyclass , just simply follow exactly what is explained above
I had trouble getting the dragon to talk to me. I had to click him numerous times and appeared that you had to be just at the right angle or something. Just keep trying different positions and an action box will finally open. You don't need anything special in your bags. Just have to have turned in the 3 talismans to get the quest.
dude, thanks for that ya saved me. i went around and killed about 50 of the freakin cloth dudes that originally dropped the talismans in an attempt to get another to use on the dragon so he'd talk to me.

Got wtfpwned the first couple times as a priest. The first time, I had him down to ~50%, I was dead, and the dragon was still at 100% health.
The trick is to think of him as a hunter; deadly at range, but mostly harmless in melee range.
Got right on top of him and downed him. Dragon at 45%, me at 100%.
VERY VERY helpful on the 2311 order. But you can even go 2-3-1-1-1 and repeat. Thanks.
I honostly found this quest rather humbling.
After two or three deaths I finally turned to thottbot.
It's not a tricky quest but there certainly are a few helpful "tricks" you have to figure out in order to complete it.
My apologies as I'm aware most of these tips have been well stated by others before me, because I was keeping the advice I recieved here, and my past failures in mind I did as follows:
1.) Mount the Drake
Gave myself a generous buffing and made sure I had as much hp as I possibly could have before speaking to the drake in order to mount him. (there were a few times when, even though I was hit less often by Thane relative to the drake, my hp ran out first, and therefore, I found myself running back to corpse in ghosty form)
This might not be a fully necissary tip, but I think every little bit of hp helps. and if nothing else, it at least makes you feel maybe serve as mental preparation. X)
2.) Approach the Thane
I Flew to a good hight above all the buildings, and approached the one in which Thane stands. It takes a moment for him to materialize on your screen, particularly if your computer has slightly lesser graphics capabilities, so approach him cautiously from above.
"from above" is key here, because to the best of my knowledge this is the only way you will get close enough to him in order to get the first hit. When flying in straight on or from sides at his hight level, he aggros sooner and starts shooting at you with that bow, which would appear to be his strongest attack.
(as said above, think of him as a hunter in this way.)
3.) Attack the Thane
Upon getting close enough, immidiately hit him with "2"
This will knock him over and interrupt his first attacks, giving you the leg up for the rest of the fight.
People here have given excellent orders for killing. 2-3-1-1 repeat is great, except there is time for you to throw in an extra attack before "2" coolsdown. Try 2-3-1-1-3 THEN repeat, this way, he is taking the damage from "3" as he is knocked back by "2" and is getting blasted by "1"
The only real "trick" to this attacking thing is that you must utilize every attack available.
"2" should be used as soon as it is available
"3" should always be running under Thane's hp bar
"1" should be used -whenever- your fingers aren't pressing other buttons.
Quest sucks.
All the advise above works: get on top of him with the dragon, spam buffet when it is up, knock him down and then flame him. He will die.
Problem is, you'll still die numerous times, and unless you can get lucky and jump into the water, you'll face another death by falling.
End result: 7 deaths (following the advise - it's impossible without it), repair bill total was 32 gold.....

Amazing...The Dragon stayed on the ground but I was flying. I had the dragons controls so flew up on the tower and used them until the invisible dragon died. I then tanked him the rest of the way. There is no way down but if you run and time your jump off the longest pointed plank you can make it to the deep part of the river without damage.
ok don't do the fly as high as you can and parachute thing , i did and ended up in the next zone , came down right in the middle of Gjalerbron a very unfriendly camp , lol
if ur dragon is about to die move on top of the ledge he's on and finish him off ur self
Read posts here first before heading over to speak with dragon. The earlier posts are correct....when u speak to dragon, you'll mount him and your action bars are replaced with three large ones. Fly up to tower where you'll see Thane standing on platform. Stick the nose of the dragon right up to his chest. The second button is for a stun effect. Hit that as soon as your up on him and then rotate between the other two. Whenever the stun is off cooldown, hit it again. Worked like a charm and he went down fast.
As a clothie (warlock 75) I found that getting right up close and doing the 2,3,1,1,3, rinse and repeat worked well however my drake did die at the end but I was able to finish him off with my Felgaurd. Now how do you get down? just jump off the rear deck. right in to the river below :) NO DAMAGE. Im not sure if you can get the GOING DOWN achivement though, As I already had it when I did this quest. but it may work. (fall 65yards without dieing). Also if your a great tank you can just dismount at the back of his hut on the deck. and go beat him up solo. I tried it. just for fun. if you need to bandage up he does not follow you to the back , and he can not hit you either.
This quest was difficult and I had to resort to alternative tactics to complete it successfully. I consider it approriately difficult.
First - i tried this a few times and failed.
Then I read thottbott.
Then I did what thottbott suggested (2311, 23113 sequences, etc, see above for details).
I was still dying. This was irritating. I identified the root cause of the problem to be that I could not stun the Thane. I didn't get a cast bar on wing buffet!
What I ended up doing is disabling all mods and resetting my configuration. Something in my mod or config setup was interfering with the game in only this regard (as far as I know).
I logged out, renamed my Logs, interface, and wtf folders, then logged back in again.
Then I could properly stun the thane and win the encounter.
Even so, it was a close battle and I had to be really on the ball with the cast sequencing to survive.
Read the comments, was prepared for sequencing and a stiff fight. Got up to him, and someone else was already fighting him. Huh, okay. So I helped. Two killed him easy. I waited for the respawn, and then I killed him again, with first players help. Moral of the story is double team the SOB.
Pretty cool... I tried the 2311 routine three times and died every time. The third time I moved the drake over the floor so when he was killed, I was standing FTF w/him. I ended up against him with about 1/3 his health remaining, so I just melee'd him to death. There I was, looking down trying to figure how to get back down (no stairs) so I just jumped into the river - no damage! - 77DK
I beat voldrune the way nicktshick said 3,2,1,1. Though he left out that you need to move out of the volley....it will kill you :).

truly the easiest way to do it is by having someone buffet him while the other dps him tip GET OUT OF VOLLEY i died about threee times untill someone helped me trust me its so much easier with a group it will save you from getting mad and just abandoning the quest
as a level 71 night elf rogue, i used my flying mount to take on the elite by myself. i was fully geared with tier 6, and i killed him. its not to hard actually, all you need to do is use powerful abilities like evasion and adrenaline rush, and he wasnt too hard. of course i was close to dying, but the dragon was bugged so i decided to see how hard he was XD
first try, i died.. and my corpse stayed high in the sky... couldn't rez there because i was out of range, had to run back to the spirit healer.. price to pay for being a noob i guess. i got 10 mins. rez sickness.. coool.
I found the secret is the 2,3,1,1 and to be real close to him to do it. I kept my fingers literally on 2,3,1,1 and just kept at it watching the cool down and got a rythm... Then flew the dragon as close as I could to the turn in point.
Quest is bugged for me. Can't speak with the dragon. Nothing happens.
