After doing an instance with a horrible group, here is a basic guide on how to do an instance.

Party roles:
There are 3 different roles
Tanks have high defense and so can take the damage. You want the mob to hit him.

Healers heal people. Tanks will die with nobody healing them, so healers are brought.

DPS. Stands for Damage Per Second. Basically their job is to kill stuff (and not get killed).

Usually, a group will have 1 tank, 1 healer, and 3 other spots which are DPS.

Marking things
The group leader can puts symbols on mobs heads for easy recognition. Skull usually means 'kill me', while others are CC/secondary targets .etc. Just attack the skull, then whatever the tank is hitting.

CC
Crowd Control is a way to reduce damage done to the tank. For example, a Mage can turn things into sheep that do nothing. However, CC usually breaks at the slightest touch, so DON'T attack it. If you are a Warlock, Fear is risky, but sometimes you can use it.

What to do if something is attacking you (and you aren't the tank)
-Run toward the tank
-Make the mob unable to attack you by some ability
-Reduce your threat with something that says 'reduces threat'.

What NOT to do
-Pull another group of mobs while you are still fighting one.
-Pull a mob with a high-damage ability (again, unless you are the tank)
-Break CCs
-let mobs run away to get more mobs
-use AoEs in somewhere with a lot of neutral mobs
-All CC the same target
-Waste mana if you are healing

This is by no means complete; can other people give more suggestions?

You should also add hunter's pet Growl to be turned off while in a instance, having growl turned on usually makes the tank's roll even harder.

i would like to add that if you have teh abaility to escape death you are fully expected to be mindful and use it as necessary.

as a healer my job to to ensure we dont wipe above all else...

the best way to do that is to make damn sure the tank doesnt die.

if i have to decide between the tank and the rogue/hunter that just pulled agro, the tank will win and the agro puller is EXPECTED to vanish/feign death unless they want to die.

in most cases i can heal through an agro pull, but some figths are a bit harrier than other and in this order i will let you die before the tank..

rogue (vanish)
hunter (feign death)
anything class NIGHT ELF (shadowmeld)
DPS pally (bubble yourself you lazy tard!)
mage (invisibility)

Tank is top priority
warlocks/DPS warrior/death knights/DPS priests/shammans

are pretty much a wash for me as to whether or not to heal if the shit hits the fan.

mages should offer conjured food and water to party members

some times no matter how good the healer..there isnt a dang thing they can do for a "squishy"(cloth and leather and sometimes mail armor classes not speced to tank) who pulls a mob..dont cry about its your own fault

Yes, shadowmeld works in a similar fashion to feign death now, it can be used to drop aggro in combat. Aggro is restored if you break shadowmeld whilst still in the same fight, so wait till the tank's re-established threat.

One thing I would add is to get a threat meter and regulate your dps...

Also, DO NOT start nuking right away as dps! Give the tank a few seconds to build up agro...

If you start nuking as soon as the pull is made and crit your first shot/spell stealing agro and die, it is NOT the tank or healer's fault!

Another suggestion: If your healer is getting hit,, use whatever you have to peel the mob off them, if healers die...everyone dies.

Make sure you assign each person a job,, so that everyone is clear wtf they are doing,,, communication is a must.

Has a healing priest it is easy to tell who knows what they are doing,, the mage who continually pulls agro from the warrior needs to be dope-slapped or dropped from group.Same goes for any dps who is pulling agro of the tank.

Hunters/druids dont be shy about using your traps and roots to protect the healer or that squishy mage who keeps getting agro.. You would be amazed how many people only know how to protect themselves and cant funtion in a group well.

One of the best things in the game is playing in a well tuned and played 5-man.

My 2 cents

Nothing better than when everyone is working together, filling their role to perfection, and even a heroic seems too easy...

On the flip-side, there is nothing worse than getting in a PUG with one or more people who are 'tards.  I don't mean someone who is a newb, who just isn't experienced and fixes the problem once you explain it to them...I mean someone who thinks they are the "sh*t" and makes the whole instance a drag...

i disagree with this.
you picked your leader SPECIFICALLY so he could make the decisions about who does what and when... boss me about as much as necessary, thats why i joined the group and let you lead.

when someone doesnt listen... thats when a  wipe occurs.

he doesnt have to be a jerk abotu it, but telling people what he wants/needs them to do to make it an effective pull is what a good leader does.. ready checks to get annoying...

I must say I tend to agree here. I am just beginning my adventure as a Holy Pally, and we wipped yesterday in Gnomer. Not my fault the hunter pulled two to four off the tank and died. The tank re-established aggro as quickly as he could, but no sooner he does this, our mage freaks out, and because he got aggroed for a sec, he blinks into a mob. Pulls that. Now the tank has 7 - 10 people on him, half are elites... The warlock does a smart move and gives me a Soul Stone as quickly as he could, since the last one ran out...he then tries spamming Rain of Fire and pulls aggro on to himself from a nearby mod, which wasn't currenlty aggroed by any party member. He dies. Tank re-establishes aggro from that mob and got them off of me. Tank now has 10 - 13 people on him, half are elites. Tank dies because healer, me, runs out of mana.  Ended up being "my fault."  I think not.

doing as much damage as possible without getting aggro, and stop gaining aggro when things go wrong

Keep an eye on the healer and know where he is at all times. If you’re dps in the group, remember that the healer is your life -far too many wipes start at the healer and spread from there. If you notice the healer is getting agro from the tank, use whatever you can to slow or stop the mob from getting to the healer and/or disemboweling him. This includes Frost/Freeze Traps, Hamstring, Wing Clip, Concussive Shot, Stuns- whatever you’ve got.            On a related note, if you have sufficient CC so that a/the Hunter doesn’t need to use his Freeze Trap every fight, use it anyway- place it at the healer’s feet. Sure, it might go to waste if all goes well, but a minor loss of mana is a lot better than a wipe that could easily have been avoided.
To react/reiterate/add to some previous points:
1- Don’t rush from fight to fight (this is for tanks/pullers) - keep an eye on the casters’ mana pools- and don’t rush off to the next fight if the healer and others are drinking. If you’re a warrior, yeah, you might lose Rage, but it‘s better than the healer going OOM.
2- Pay attention the chat screen- if someone says says “AFK” or “Hold on” because their bladder is about to burst, a construction vehicle just backed through a wall of their home, or just wants to say something about the group dynamic- Stop and Listen. Yes, it might slow you down, but having to run back to the instance for your corpse would probably take quite a bit longer.
3- Ready/checks- these can get annoying (or downright insulting, in my opinion) when used each and every pull. They are a good tool, but when everyone is doing as they should and things are going well- all these do is throw off the rhythm of the group. Use them on the first few pulls, and when you know everyone is behaving properly, save these for boss fights. (And actually pay attention to them, in the past I got so annoyed with the Ready Checks I would hit “No”, but the tank went regardless.)
4- If there is a problem, bring it up BEFORE something goes wrong. If you need a moment to re-arrange your spells, or need everyone together for a buff, don’t wait. If you notice the Priest is waiting for the tank’s HP to drop because he only uses Greater Heal: bring this up before catastrophe strikes (I’ve had this happen, it did not make for a fun dungeon). If the Mage is trying to sheep multiple targets at once, if one group member isn’t fulfilling his role in the group or even if it’s just to mention a caster let their (armor) buffs lapse: Say something at the first opportunity, don’t wait until the corpse run.
5- Mark targets whenever necessary. This prevents confusion and keeps the group working together smoothly. If you aren’t familiar with that dungeon, don’t know who to mark, or just hate marking (like I do), then pass that function.
6- (Last, but not least:) Don’t place blame if and when something goes wrong (and something usually will). Blaming the tank or healer isn’t going to make anything better, your repair bill isn’t going down because you refuse to carry responsibility. Its better to “suggest” changes than scream at the person you think is responsible. “Please remember not to shield the Tank” will have better results than, “WTF, YOU STUPID NUB!!” If something goes wrong consider how you can prevent it from happening again.
(Thank you to those who made it through yet another wall of my text.)

my main is a hunter, and i like to think i'm not a huntard... if omen says i'm approaching the tank's aggro, guess what, I DROP THE DPS! i have seen so many dps just keep nuking and then complaining  when they die. personally, i like to use a /assist macro, that way i'm attacking the enemy that the tank has the most aggro on, and thus not pulling any from him (unless i get a bunch of good crits in a row, but then there's always FD). also, one thing that pisses me off personally is when people simply assume you know what each mark is for, some people use them completely different (if at all) and expect everyone else to know that moon is sheep/frost trap/sap.

on a side note, if you are wipe recovery (hunter/rogue/whatever else with jumper cables or whatever other means of rezzing) try not to die... so many times i have been the only survivor and my cables didn't work/are on Cd. i know that sometimes its unavoidable, but still, when a rogue or hunter sees trouble coming, they should be able to avoid it.

that's my opinion at least, sorry if i ranted its been a long night.

Players should be a bit more patient with others and if they're unhappy with someone else's performance, they should say so in a polite manner. Teaching someone how to play gets farther than trying to belittle someone.

Thanks for the instance info. I really needed this. Learned something new today and hope to put it to use later on tonight.

Basic guide for healers:
Target the tank. They will need the most healing. If the tank dies, then the rest of the group will usually wipe so they are the most important person to keep alive, except for yourself, but mobs shouldn't attack you.

If a mob attacks you;
- Use low threat heals such as Heal over Time (HoT) spells.
- Run toward the tank so they can make the mob attack them.
- If the tank does not respond quickly, alert them with a quick statement such as "aggro!" to make sure they know you're being attacked.
- Most people that heal don't have an anti-aggro spell. If you are a Night Elf, however, use Shadowmeld to get rid of threat.

Don't waste mana by over-healing. This is when you heal when people who don't need it. If DPSers are bove 60% health they usually don't need healing unless they're still being attacked. Otherwise, they can bandage or use a potion.
If the tank is above 80%, they may not need urgent healing unless they're taking damage quickly. You may be able to put a HoT on them and they will be okay. If they carry on losing health, or were losing it rapidly to begin with, charge up a more powerful healing spell.
Most groups also won't appreciate it if you heal pets and minions. Their owners can do this and they are not important members of a party. It is wasting mana to heal them.
Say "OOM" or "mana" when you're drinking. You won't need to drink often on trash mobs if you're conserving mana, but make sure you tell people if you do so they know not to pull mobs.

If the group wipes, make sure you rez others that can rez first. This way, they can help you bring the group back to life and you can start attacking things again sooner. Classes that can rez people include Druids, Shamans, Priests and Paladins.

EDIT: Correcting typos.

Trigger Happy DPS! Hold your horses! Nothing is more frustraiting as a tank then a rogue who stealths, runs forward and attempts a sap on one of the enemies, only to be spotted and attacked.....all before the healer is mana'd up and the targets have been marked. No more time to think, no way to back out now, I have to charge in and hope that I can save the rogue, while also hoping that the healer has enough mana to keep me alive. And no, I'm not just saying rogues do this, although it seems to be more of a problem with them than other dps classes because they can stealth.
If the tank is not going as fast as you think they should be, ASK them why they wait so long. They may have a reason (GASP), yes, a valid Reason for taking their time. Tanks know their limits, and they try and keep up with their healers limits too. Just have PATIENCE!

things to watch out for:

as melee dps (classes in which you physically smack the mob with a club, etc but arent the one trying to hold its threat) the things that kill you most are:
-cleaves- some mobs hit everything in front of them, stand behind all enemies in combat, not only does this prevent cleaves, but it also makes them unable to dodge or parry your attacks.
-whirlwind- if an enemy starts to spin run away, you're about to take a good deal of damage.
-agro- dont start full damage on an enemy until a few seconds into the fight, or an unlucky crit will cause it to turn and smack you, hard. instead of spamming sinister strike as fast as possible as a rogue, just hit it every 2 seconds for about 10 seconds and you probably wont get agro.
also, never be the first person to hit a mob
-stuff on the ground/aoe- if you start taking damage during a fight and dont have a mobs agro, keep your eyes on the ground, you might be standing in something (fire, shadow circles)- anything that shows up on the ground during a fight is almost invariably detrimental.

as a caster (you cast damaging spells for a living, and im lumping hunters in this section) the things that kill you most
-agro- see above. also, be careful with area of effect (aoe) spells, you can easily pull agro and die if you have a unskilled pug tank.
-pets- set them to passive. turn off their taunt. setup a macro for them to attack your target- and make damn sure never to send them in to kill a group your tank has not yet engaged or you may very well kill everyone
-spell reflect- if you see this being cast by a mob, its a good idea to stop casting spells until it wears off.

as a tank (you takes the damage on purpose- warrior/feral druid/prot paladin/deathknight)
-mana- if your healer, or really anyone in the group has less than a half bar of mana, you shouldnt pull (unless you know theyre good enough to not go oom from one pull- dont trust pugs are competent though) you want them to have the mana to deal with unforseen situations (adds, dead tank) where theyd need to start using higher-cost heals, and more frequently
-bad pulls- when pulling a group of enemies towards the group, always pick the closest one, and use a ranged ability to do so unless there are no other groups of enemies anywhere near the desired one. warriors: ranged weapon, druids: faerie fire feral, paladins: avenger's sheild (before 50 get someone else to pull then taunt off of them). if you get two groups you're much more likely to die than if you had just got the one.
before pulling, make sure there arent any patrolling groups of mobs (pats) that are close to the desired group, or will be coming close to where you plan to kill the group, in some situations you'd rather get the pat first.

the things that kill healers most, or rather, things easiest to mess up
-dont use biggest heal all the time- in 75% of situations, your more efficient, faster, smaller heal works better. (ie on a paladin, your primary heal is flash of light, and your nuke heal is holy light- only to be used to bring people from low to full quickly when shits going down (or to be spammed once you're well geared and have crazy mana efficiency... doesnt apply to anyone reading this). you're likely to burn through your mana very quickly if you primarily use your greater heals, use the smaller one frequently instead.
-drink whenever possible- whenever you're out of combat, drink. period. speeds things up.
-if you're a spirit based class (priest, druid) try to stay out of the five second rule (it takes 5 seconds after a spellcast's end for spirit-mana regeneration to start) as much as possible, top people off in bursts.
note: this doesnt apply to shaman or paladins much.
-pulling agro- try not to heal for the first few seconds of a fight, unless its necessary- its possible that mobs will come after you. if you do get agro, and nobodys immediately peeling mobs off of you, run to the tank- even if hes not paying attention, his multi target/aoe attacks could pull it off of you.
-rezzes- ressurect the dead. it speeds things up. yeah they're lazy. also applies to non healers who can rez.
-blame- after a wipe, its very likely the healer will be blamed. its best to ignore it, or if it was obviously someone else's fault (hunter pulled another group, etc) point that out. getting into a nerdrage arguement in a party isnt a good way to get things done.
use the phrase "lets just get this done" often if needed.

Besides the Tank, the Priest has to be protected. As a mage, I tend to stay near the Healer. Simple reason is if the group is going to wipe, and that can be figured out quickly; the priest will retreat and I get the agro with whatever I have left.

Yes that is all important in a instance group but there is something missing. In the group the tank is the leader. He or she is the one to say hey this is what we are going to do. Its his or her duty to ask the party members what is there needed to be done and what monsters are needed to kill.

(right things to do )

1. Tank must always ask what the party needs and if they need a break or not.
2. Tank must tell the party members what He/she is going to do so the whole party doesnt aggro the room.
3.Tank must always keep track on how the party members are doing as there role and to see if they should switch.

(wrong things to do)

1.Tank invites every one and just enters the instance without a word.
2. Tank automatically fights the monster she wants to fight and leave the ones she doesnt want to fight alone (even if its quest monsters)
3.Tank choses to fight however she wants to even if its making the other party members work to surrivive.

Watch Health/Mana- a priest/pally/shama/druid with no mana is worthless ( for heals), as a holy pally, I don't want the tank to pull until I have FULL mana.... ( and a lil heal keeps aggo off you vs a BIG heal)

Watch Aggro- let the guy/gal in plate have it.. they have tough armour and BIG weapons

COMMUNICATE- if u need mana/help whatever.. let others know, whether in wow party chat or some other voice server, mics are about 10-15 bucks from a local Walmart, its faster to talk into a mic then type help!  If you need a buff, ask, also mages should offer conjured food/water to members.. and Warlocks- that soulstone is a WONDERFUL thing

Always remeber to REPAIR/AMMO/PET FOOD/WATER (don't count on a mage to be in group, but be grateful when they share)

speaking off dk's

non-tanking dk's
stop taunting mobs !!
reserve using death grip to steal mobs from the healer!! not the tank when he's trying to build up aggro!!

and dps in general
the first target a tank hits does not mean - attack it till its dead.  for example
group of three mobs , i mark the third .. i run in as tank.. hit the first, hit the second, then blast the third with as much threat as i can.. this way i have a base threat on all targets. don't start hitting anything until i hit the one with the skull mark, and especially don't hit the one without skull mark.

i hit the first two briefly first to make sure they dont run to the healers or dps. then get a headstart in threat on the main mark, this is the nuke time. meanwhile i'll build up more aggro on the first two...

don't hit whatever the tank hits first - he does that to get a headstart on threat. period

Greed is if u want the item for profit gain (DE, AH, etc.)

Need is for the people who ACTUALLY NEED the item as an upgrade to their gear.

Pass on the item if you don't need it whatsoever and let the other roll on it so they can use it for their own use.  If you plan on selling it to a vendor please wait to make sure no one is rolling for DE!

And yes, i believe that there should be an option to allow party members vote on whether or not a player can need roll an item (help prevent ninja looting).

Teamwork. That's it. That is all you need to finish an instance smoothly. Communicate with the group and keep the fighting and bullshit down.

Mages and DPS: ASK THE TANK WHAT THEY WANT!!! It is your job to back them up, not be all and end all. I'm a Mage; I know. CC is more important than DPS if the tank calls for it.

Tank: GIVE US TIME TO DRINK!!! Casters shouldn't have to say OOM; you should be watching our mana and expect to stop after every large mob.

Heals: Small spells. Don't nuke the big ones. The group tends to stay alive longer when you balance out small spells on everyone.

EVERYONE: Don't do the "it's his fault" routine. People will make mistakes; admit to it and LEARN from it. Don't blame people. Hell, sometimes groups just wipe. You can't win all the time, and it takes some strokes of luck sometimes.

I have a couple comments along the lines of communication and teamwork.

Before Boss fights, be sure to establish that everyone knows what to expect in the fight ahead and are clear about what tactics will be used.

Always make sure your shaman, if you have one, knows what totems to place and where to place them.  Make sure he knows that the mobs just around the corner use poison, or sleep, or whatever.
You may have done this instance 427 times.  Assume this is the first time the others have been there.

I've been wondering... Why doesn't everyone, upon the drop of a BoE epic hit NEED instead of GREED? gives all players a fair roll and no one can ninja.

I'm aware alot of people hit GREED out of reflex. Am I missing something??

I always tell people to greed when any BoE drops, just because it's likely someone will click Greed instinctively.  It's not fair if someone clicks Greed thinking it's BoP then everyone else clicks Need.

I've even rerolled on BoE drops when I've accidently needed and others greeded.

Thank you all very much for an informative thread.
I have searched all WoW type forums for information on how to do your position in groups but could never find anything that a newbie like me could understand.
Now maybe I will be able to say yes the next time someone asks me to group with them.
thanks again!
:)

I must say I tend to agree here. I am just beginning my adventure as a Holy Pally, and we wipped yesterday in Gnomer....

That is one funny Gnomer run.  It sounds as if all of your dps was working for the troggs.  A mage blinking into a new batch of mobs.. a warlock not knowing how to position his rain of fire..priceless.  It's hard to imagine so many piss poor dps in one group but then again that's Gnomer.

My tips will be:

Tanks: Don't waste time taking aggro from a pet.  Be aware of where you are tanking.  Remember line of sight and to pull back if your mobs will run.  Above all else your healer is your number one, don't blow all your taunting abilities on dps aggro whores.

Healers: Heal yourself. ( This will not be an issue if your tank is performing properly.  Just a bit of maintence for the aoeing bosses/mob.)  Keep your tank as close to 100% health as possible!  This will make the runner coming back with an entire new batch far easier to get through, even if your dps is burnt out.  If you have to do an aoe healing spell give your tank their "normal" heal first, then cast the aoe.  You don't want your tank to have to wait and the aoe won't top them off since they will still be getting hit.  Above all be confident in your healing skill.  Make calls on who deserves your mana.  The aggro whores are easily tamed if you let them die a time or two.  If not, boot them.  Bad Dps is a dime a dozen.

Dps: Wait for tank to have aggro.  IF you see you are gaining aggro use your move to drop it and ease up.  If you see your healer being hit divert your damage to that mob or use other immoblizing abilities on it. (like frost nova, ice trap ect)If the healer is beating you on the damage chart and you find yourself sitting around watching everything happen because  you are lazy and just wanted a free ride type /camp.

speaking of hunters there pets should be be set for passive or defensive otherwise they will attack mobs before the tank/group is  ready..usually in a large instance your group will want some down time to recover health and mana before the next pull and if a hunter's pet attracts aggro too soon it may mean a wipe for your whole entire party; another thing to be aware of is when your healer or other party members are out of mana/oom. Tanks should pay attention to this especially because if a healer is oom/out of mana that means no heals for the tank or the rest of the party which also can cause a wipe. A party wipe is when all members in your party are dead. Remember if your going to die don't panic because chances are that your healer can revive you after battle so make sure the healer stays alive. If not you will have to run back to the instance and this can be time consuming if the nearest graveyard or gy is a long distance from the instance. Time lost from a wipe can also cause some mobs you killed to respawn meaning they will be alive again with full health.

as far as i know any movement breaks shadowmeld effect so basically you have to stand very still..its really not that great especially compared to a rogue's ability to stealth as they can move but stealth is broken in combat just the same

I want to add something to what Mike000 said about looting.Don't need roll on an item for an alt. Only need roll on items for the character your playing and only if its an upgrade and not for an offset you want either. Make sure to hash out any details regarding loot before entering an instance to prevent in fighting and losing group moral. The tank and healer are priority for me in any group for drops as its important they get upgrades. Make sure you ask before needing anything as someone may benefit from a drop more or not have gotten any upgrades yet. It is best to be diplomatic and fair so just remember to be considerate about the other members in your party. Everything that drops isn't yours so don't need roll it all if you do need it always ask if its alright. Also remember certain instances may favor cloth wearers or tanks respectively based on drop rates so don't get frustrated if nothing has dropped for you. Research what bosses drop what and the percentage or likely hood that an item you may want will drop in that particular instance. This will give you an edge so you won't always be competing to beat out other players and you can get at least one upgrade. If your courteous enough to pass on items you don't need it also helps insure that everyone at least wins a roll if he/she has been on a bad streak; losing every roll. Most important thing of all I can't stress this enough as someone who like running instances; have fun! For crying out loud its a game people, realize this and let go of your frustration. Your supposed to be playing WOW to get rid of anger not fuel it more.
